I've been watching some videos about kendo lately, and I came up to this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1aNiy2i7X0&feature=channel_page

After watching this, I think that I am going to join a "kendo school". What does /jp/ think about Kendo?

a worthy sport

inferior to aikido

OP here, can you use swords in aikido? You can only grab your opponent and twist his arm from what I 've seen.

>> No.2807179

Kendo is fine, if you love the sound of ringing in your ears and losing 5kg of water weight every class.

Just that, but there's little teamwork and not very flashy. So don't do it for the sake of friends or to look cool.
It's mostly useless if you're taking it for self-defence.

I take Aikido, we practice using them regularly, aikido is much more practical than kendo if you wanna learn self-defense

I see.

Aikido seems more complex and difficult to me though. Kendo looks easier. Is that true or is it just me?

Well, I think I am going to go with Kendo then, since I want to be able to enter tournaments in a couple of years.

Kendo is a lot simpler, However the 'swords' are different we practice using a bokken most of the time combined with a the four-foot staff which you can treat like a shinai but it's alot more versatile, also weapons training only takes up about 1/3 of our lesson time with it being about a mostly even split between bokken, the jo and tanto.

Aikido is an incredibly effective martial art, I've taken tae kwon do and kung-fu since I was a child. The technique does get pretty complicated later on with all the arm-bending and stuff, so yes it is pretty complex.

None of those are effective forms of martial arts.

I feel bad for you, son.

That's a rather pathetic reason, you can certainly enter Kendo tournaments within a few months of first starting but you'll be sorely disappointed
Aikido doesn't exactly encourage competition so you'll have to stick with Kendo if you want it, but better yet start fencing or judo.

Also, I found fencing and judo boring.

It's probably Kendo fights are boring pieces of shit, go for Aikido even the practices are more entertaining.

It's because Kendo fights are like repeated games of Rock Paper Scissors except with a giant stick.

Go Judo if you want to crush people, and kill their souls. Kyokushin/Seido-kaikan Karate if you want to murder people will violence.

Anything else is shit. Don't believe a word they say. Aikido is for old men who aren't good enough to compete in Judo.

I guess I could take a few Aikido and Kendo lessons and see how it works out.

Thanks for the info /jp/ see ya later!

You need alot of stamina, so jog all the time.
Also expect many blisters on your feet and hands.

I remember getting out of class before because my hands were so bruised and shaking the next day I couldn't hold a pen...was sent to the nurse.. Good times.
