i had installed japanese characters to install umineko like a week ago and all of the sudden today i was typing in japanese. so it got me thinking... what's the proper way to type in japanese? that is to say. when am i supposed to be pressing the space bar to type efficiently?

I don't think there's a set way, it's up to you to find the best way to do it. Young kids would probably convert their kanji every time they needed to use one since they didn't know any better, the typical user probably finishes a sentence, it does a somewhat good job of figuring out which to convert and what not, especially as they learn from you. It's just occasionally you'll type in a sentence where the breaks between words are ambiguous, and it'll take a little longer to get it to choose the right words.
