Hawaii is in many ways effectively a different country from the rest of the US, culturally, racially, pretty much all around Hawaii is very different from the mainland. Hawaii used to be independent, and believe me that is still very much a sore point.

In the context of the poll, Hawaii has a much higher Japanese population (both Japanese-American and Japanese emigrant) than the rest of the US, so it was probably separated out for that reason.

A documentary I saw about a Japanese university student studying in Canada said that some Japanese thought Canada has a rather "relaxed, almost lazy" type of lifestyle compared to their hectic day to day average life.
