Post photographs and videos you or others have taken around Japan.
Modern or traditional, urban or rural, landscape or macro, anything is good.
Try to keep pictures natural looking if possible.
If you know the location a photo was taken, it is useful to post it with the image.

The Anon who usually started, kept and archived these threads had to leave in late 2019, and asked for someone to take over while he was away, we managed to keep this going for a few months, but then the threads started to die too soon.

Please, everybody help keep these comfy threads alive, do it for Anon (Anon I hope you're OK)

You get paid enough to live on, even with some luxuries.
It's not a career salary, but it's not meant to be. And being in the middle of nowhere is where you will see views like you are gushing over.
If you want to experience comfy Japan, you're not going to be living in Tokyo or Osaka or another big city.

Probably either a 777 or a 787. Iirc KLM doesn't fly the 747 anymore.
The 777 KLM I tool from Paris to Osaka was 3-4-3 like that.

Its a 777-200. Flight was from Osaka to Amsterdam. I always fly with KLM because Schipol can be easily reached from the airport close to my home and their schedules are pretty good.

KLM does still fly the 747, at least as of January
>t. flew on the upper deck back home from Europe

I don't think they were flying them to Japan though, and naturally routes have been cut since. They may still be flowing though, because KLM operates the combi version which carries a fuckload of freight as well as passengers.

How long of a flight is that?
Kind of a /trv/ question but how does anyone handle long flights? I tap out after 5 hours so I have no idea how I'll survive an eventual flight to japan.

I don't know the exact time, but Osaka-Amsterdam is probably in the 10-12 hour range. Depending on where you're flying from, you could probably do shorter connecting flights, but it's honestly better to just get it all over at once. You generally have more legroom on the big long haul planes, and of course food and drink is a step up from domestic/short haul flights as well. You're really making it if you can take advantage of credit card signup bonuses for business class.

Amsterdam to KIX is 9 to 10 hours and KIX to Amsterdam is around 11 hours. My return flight this time was 11 hours 35 minutes.
I always watch three movies and in between I listen to music and rest my eyes a bit. Board entertainment was horrible this time though. Time really flew by. I closed my eyes and put on some music and suddenly two and a half hours were gone.
Depending on when you leave and when you land (timezones and stuff) its super handy if youre able to fall asleep. I can never do it though.

For a trip EU to Japan I get a ticket with take-off in the morning and landing in the morning (with the travel time and spin of the planet it works out decently enough). I then simply don't sleep the night before, sleep like a corpse through the trip (possibly interrupted by food), and wake up pretty well synced to Japanese time somewhere over the east coast of Russia.

Some parts of Kobe are up the slopes of a mountain range, bc the city is pressed between the mountains and the sea, so it can only grow into the mountains or claiming land via man-made islands.
Other than that, most major cities I visited seem to avoid growing up the mountains, even when they have some mountains in the surroundings (ie. theres a small mountain range separating Osaka and Nara).
You can find countless small towns/cities in mountain areas, tho

I live in Lisbon. I love the peace and quiet of inaka, but I do start missing the "noise" of the city. The cars. You might think that all cities are alike but Tokyo is nothing like Lisbon.

For starters, I appreciate asian architecture a lot. You get these really thin and yet very tall buildings you don't see in the west, I enjoy the "cut" rooftops thanks to building code relating to sunlight, I enjoy the way the billboards are set on top of buildings. I also appreciate that the city planners don't think more lanes is always the solution for everything.

I know it's a bit of a meme at this point but I enjoyed every second I spent in akiba, even with all the Pajeets walking the streets.

Driving in the C1 loop in a rental BRZ was amazing fun.

Conversely, I fucking hate Manhattan. Dirty, all the buildings are ugly, horrible roads, horrible people. Cities are cities but they're different, just like how all inaka villages are not the same.

I should've clarified as Showa Era. My cars are from the 1980's: a 1987 Honda Prelude and a 1988 Toyota MR2. It wasn't hard in my case since my two cars aren't particularly rare or sought-after, but I shipped them across the country from the West Coast since the survival rate for older cars is much higher in that region. If you are looking for 1970's LHD cars, the only cheap and easy way is to find a popular model (eg. Celica, 240Z, RX-7) in bad cosmetic shape and ship it. If you're looking for something obscure, you'll probably have to import it. Anything over 40 years old is usually beyond the age of being used for commuting so most examples are either restored cars or abandoned cars waiting to be restored.

RHD cars sold in Japan are another story. Because of the Bubble economy in the 1980s, people replaced their cars often which created a large market for exported Japanese cars as most would only stay in the country for around 7-10 years before they were shipped out of the country or scrapped. To my knowledge, current tax regulations in Japan are drafted in a way to incentivize new car purchases after a certain number of years. This along with stringent vehicle inspections confined the market for older cars to only enthusiasts. You can buy a new car in Japan for the price of a 35-year old Sprinter Trueno. 70's cars like Skylines and Fairlady-Zs are already beyond the six-figure mark because there are so few left registered. Most older RHD cars had already been exported to Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Southeast Asia, and the United Kingdom. What the US importers are getting now are the leftover scraps.

>>27679997
I can't read it, but the format looks similar to a mechanics receipt. My guess is based on the fact that paperwork I've found left inside of scrapped cars sometimes gives an indication from when it was last used.

If the images have the orientation EXIF it will rotate the image based on the tag and strip the tag.

>Of course. I haven't gotten a chance to look around at options (please bear in mind, i don't know a goddamned thing about cameras).

I'd recommend taking a look at mirrorless. Sony or Fuji especially (I prefer Sony hardware, but Fuji has some really neat film simulations that are very popular). To achieve the examples posted above either would work though. They just have their saturation bumped up a bit.

>I'm sure image quality is not only dependent on the camera, but on the lens as well, and i'd like to go for a bit wider shot.

The lens is more important than the body if anything. But with a mirrorless body, you can adapt almost anything to be used. And they have been making great lenses for a really long time. Most cameras perform similarly in most situations, low light is where you see a big difference.

Don't buy a body until you know what lens you want. On a full frame body I'd recommend a standard ~24-70mm zoom and a nice wide-ish prime of around 24mm. Note that on a crop sensor body those lenses you need to go a tad wider to get the same effect.

>I wanted to upload a sample photo i took, but i'm not sure what settings the person i borrowed it from had it on, but theyre all fucking 12mbs, compared to all these great photos at a fraction of the size. I'm sure looking around i can find an answer for that problem.

Personal opinion, Hikone castle is absolutely worth the visit as well. It's much smaller than Himeji, so not as impressive to the average visitor, but it retains a lot of the defensive features that Japanese castles had in the period. Dry moats, the route across the wet moat and up and under the bridge before finally going a full corkscrew to reach the bridge and gatehouse itself, and the whole path up is a steep heavily slanted stairway. Hikone is one of a handful of castle that retains that last feature. And besides that, the views of Lake Biwa from the keep are quite nice.

I went to Gifu castle because 1. it was close and 2. it contains artifacts and stories related to portuguese missionaries that stayed in Japan next to Oda Nobunaga, but I was disappointed at how modern the interior of the castle was.

I haven't been to Gifu, but the interiors at Matsumoto, Hikone, and Hirosaki all seemed to be pretty original to me, though utterly devoid of any kind of furniture or features other than small boards giving information about the room or in Matsumoto's case, the period firearms on display. All the interior stairs are the typical incredibly steep almost ladder-like stairways with a lot of space between each step. It wasn't like Kanazawa, which is new modern construction that tries to use mostly traditional techniques, like how they notch the beams so that they both fit together snugly but still have a bit of play for earthquake resilience. Apparently that's something that's survived into modern day Japanese home construction as well.

I think it really depends on when they rebuilt Gifu castle. If it was in the decades after WWII, it probably was just rebuilt to superficially look like the original. It seems like the move back towards rebuilding/restoring these sites to be as close as possible to the originals is a much newer trend that started in the past 30-40 years or so.

Sounds about right.
Requiring people to take their shoes off before entering was also a sign of not being a rebuilt castle.

Already posted in the past several times, but here was the chalkboard in Toyosato school one month after the arson incident.

I took many more pictures in the school, but it is mainly just K-On merch. If people want to see that, just say.

My apartment's balcony. Sorry if its not appealing to some people but I miss it. Rona is keeping me away.

also, there is a good chance I posted the inside before a long time ago, but just in case. I plan on tidying up and taking a lot more comfy photos when I get back.

yep. although I am still working on a long-term visa situation, so best case scenario would have been sticking around for a few months this year.

This guy escaped from his room and almost made it outside because someone opened the door for him. Zookeepers got him back though

I'm gonna have an engineering degree soon. I really want to give living in Japan a shot, but it really depends on whether I can find something like an international or smaller company, so as to hopefully avoid the extremes of Japanese work-life balance (or rather, the lack thereof).

I'm doing my undergrad thesis on a research project based in Japan, collaborating with a professor in a Japanese university. I will do my grad here, but who knows, maybe I'll do my PhD in Japan.
I love these pictures, unfortunately I can't contribute since I don't have any saved.

Cheers mate. Shikoku is the best. I am not a big city person so I didnt enjoy Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto nearly as much as I did the various places I stayed at in Shikoku.
I can warmly recommend the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage, even if one only does a small part of it.

I was really hoping it wasn't a picture of that.
I dunno why, but I find that sculpture particularly unnerving.
