Hey /jp/. I've never played a Touhou game but I want to get into the series. Where do you guys recommend I start?

The first one, that's if you can find the torrent.
No, I will not spoonfeed you.

I recommend starting with Touhou 10 since it's not too hard.

Is it me or /jp/ been getting some increase in Touhou traffic lately. What's going on?

Multitude of things in and outside /jp/.
That includes the guy making touhou shitpost threads on /a/ and so on.
/bant/ is still touhou dominant to the roots.

now that I remember, apparently Cirno day was the day of some fags decided to raid /bant/. Cirno completely flooded it out. An overwhelming victory for Cirno.

PCB. 6 (EoSD) is a poor place you start due to growing pains/less qol features. I recommend returning to it if you enjoy 7

I dunno anything about it, I've just been meaning to play Touhou for ages and finally got some free time and I figured /jp/ would know better than /v/

What, you mean 2hu in general or people asking what is or is not a 2hu? If it's the former it's less because of shitty generals, and if its the latter its more because of shitty generals/anons just wanting to have a giggle. Probably moreso on the shitty generals side, because I mean... look at this. Middle of the night in burgerland and they're still bumping us up almost to the top 5 most active.

Emulate 1-5 on Annex98 (not the best graphics and sound, but 98next will lag horribly unless you have a turbofreak computer, and Neko Project is retarded overkill for just 5 games that makes you jump for it)

Get the rest of the mainline games up to 17 from Mariya Shrine.

Enjoy. They are fun as hell and aesthetically pleasing.

**Revision**
I was wondering the same thing after I typed that, because I remember it feeling cumbersome. After messing with it in detail, I can tell you it's my favorite. But you have to follow the configurations as suggested on Mariyashrine. To the letter.

I'm running it on XP and all 1-5 run completely lag free. And I had no idea these games sounded this beautiful. Anus98 simplifies the sound, and it should be a crime because these OST are solid chiptune works in their own right.
After loading a game, you hit reset to get started. But that's so minor I can't complain.

I was wrong. Neko Project is the way. Try it and come tell us how you like it.

I already tried it.
If it emulates well then it's the best. There's no need for flashy bloatware.

I got into Touhou about a month and a half ago, I recommend playing EoSD, reading some of the manga, and lurking threads. You don't need to worry about knowing every character and all the stuff people reference, you'll pick up on it as you go.

Touhou Gameplay Thread
There's usually one in the catalog.

Realistically, any of them works. You can play what looks most interesting to you and you'll be fine. Integer games are shooters (I recommend sticking to those at first), and decimal games are either shooter spinoffs or fighting games, notwithstanding the upcoming platformer.

If you're wondering which is the most beginner friendly, I would say 4, 7, and 10 in that order. 4 is by far the easiest and devoid of any weird gimmicks, 7 has some minor gimmicks but is also quite easy and plentiful with resources, and 10 is a tad harder but gives out many lives and a crazy amount of bombs.

If you end up liking what you play and want to get into the nitty gritty of the series, start from 1 and work your way up. There are also print works that expand upon the lore and storylines, I'd recommend reading them alongside the games in the order they were released. Don't be afraid to move on prematurely if you get stuck on a game or find something boring, move on but take a look at the wiki for translations or a summary. Touhou is big on world building, but not so much maintaining an overarching storyline.

You all keep telling him to read as he goes without an actual guide.
All it means is that someone will have to dig through the archive for one of the discussion threads and that one post that tells you the order to read.

As stated earlier i whould recomend EOSD (6) as it is a well balanced game but may be a little har but overall one of the best games

I thought I mentioned checking the wiki for release dates, but it seems I forgot. The "Official News" page consolidates them in one list.

Also, thank you for reminding me of that reading order guide from a while back This is the most recent I could find (last updated in October 2018). I'm not very familiar with recent Touhou, but this is a rough outline to the best of my understanding since then:

- April 2019: Grimoire of Usami
- June 2019: Wild and Horned Hermit ends
- August 2019: Wily Beast and Wicked Creature
- September 2019: Visionary Fairies in Shrine ends
- October 2019: Cheating Detective Satori begins
- November 2019: Lotus Eaters begins
- Sometime in the future: Gouyoku Ibun

Again, check the wiki's news page for detailed release dates.
