Hakurei shrine is way not dilapidated enough and far too tidy.

Aside from casting Mai Nakahara as Reimu, Maikaze really did everything wrong.

Nothing incredible but about x1000 better than I thought it would be. Also, though the animation wasn't perfect, it did have less QUALITY than many professional productions, and the backgrounds were nice. The VAs were good, though unfortunately some of the touhous were out of character (especially Marisa).

All in all, a decent effort, especially from a bunch of first-timers working in the largely uncharted territory of doujin animation. I look forward to future installments.

On general principle I agree with you completely.

As a Touhoufag though it's my duty to loudly exclaim any and all inconsistencies with my perception of the characters and environments.

Some of the stuff in that really makes you wonder if Maikaze played the games or even read the books - the kind of mistakes you'd expect from mainstream studios but not a doujin house.

When you consider that pretty much just TOKINE with akira on background layouts and がんくま doing soundwork did the whole thing, you realise the epic scale of the project. Pretty much one guy did all the animation/planning/directing and managed to get professional talent to direct. It's really an accomplishment that rivals ZUN's in enviability, if not quality of results.

Well, let's see. Story was pointless. That's easily the biggest flaw. Characters were a mixed bag. They got most of them OK, except for Sakuya, who was lame, and Aya who they nailed.

Graphically, totally in keeping with ZUN's style by making the characters look weird and the backgrounds gorgeous. Audibly nothing special, but competent.

I'm hoping that they will do more since it was good for what it is, much like KS, but they have to get the aforementioned story fixed. Actually, I'm not sure about tying it to the games. I'd rather they did silly life stories.

Sakuya was quite OK. Aya was a bit too moe, but just right for Tokine's drawing style.
The only REALLY bad voice is Marisa. She's a cute little blonde girl. She absolutely can't have the voice of a boy. It's like they saw the "da ze" and concluded that it must sound boyish.

I'm wondering if the moonlanders share our opinions of the VAs (since that might affect how they sound in ep 2).

Is Rie's perfect and elegant meido voice really how most of them perceive Sakuya? And are they as against how Marisa was portrayed as us? Do any of you know?

Though I would have expected Marisa to have a girlish voice, I've come to like the deeper voice, actually.
They used a deeper voice for those M-1s, too.
