So, this is a bit of an abstract theory, but what are the chances that this is why Youmu's dad, Youki, left? I imagine the same was done to him, and now that he had a kid, he could teach her and then leave her behind while he fucked off and got his freedom. It's probably why he never came back, and nobody knows where he is. Yuyuko comes off as an abusive asshole, and if ZUN had any creativity he'd actually take what he's put down here and go all the way. At least, if he could do it in a way that wasn't too dark and heavy handed for Touhou. We've always had dark things but it's almost always been in subtext or not necessarily emphasized, but he'd been going down this path with Youmu being a broken child because the person who is practically her mother refuses to do her fucking job. ZUN's memo on Youki calls him Youmu's old man. The word used also means grandfather, but the kanji is not commonly used for that meaning.
English fans then interpreted "old man" as slang for father, whereas Japanese fans ignored the kanji usage and went with grandfather.
The question is why ZUN used an ambiguous word in the first place. Either it's a fancy way to write grandfather or he didn't want to specify Youki's exact relation to Youmu.
Given Youki is at least a few hundred years older than Youmu, it's possible that he's actually a distant ancestor.
