>>26125900
This is when ZUN got really lazy and made a bland game with a shitty, boring gimmick. He also failed to test every shottype or the new replay system properly.

>>26123660
This is the same as above, but amplified to fuck. ZUN probably only playtested the game with ReimuA, which is also glitchy as fuck, and instead of balancing the shottypes or danmaku properly, he said "fuck it, just give the player 20 extends so they can bomb all the dumb shit."

After all, 99% of people only care about Touhou for the characters and the music, so why bother making a good, bugless game? :^)

Bad damage output, fatbox, Benben, and replay desync? ZUN really went out for MarisaA in DDC. Honestly I'd go as far as saying she's the worst shottype in all of Touhou, even worse than Sakuya solo, Alice solo, MoF MarisaA, or DDC SakuyaB.

It highly depends on the shot you're using. Benben is awful if you don't end her attacks a few seconds in, and ReimuA and SakuyaA can make quick work of her. With MarisaA, she won't kill anything quickly even with shotgunning, so all the nons end up being heavy RNG micro crap, the first spell can almost wall you sometimes because it gives more opportunities for stray bullets to block your path, the second spell makes you do risky speedkill strats to avoid getting walled, and Double Score sucks for everything. Also, Yatsuhashi is a worse midboss than Benben.

From my experience, Benben's midboss is way easier, and even if you opted to use SakuyaB, Yatsuhashi's boss nons are mostly manageable, the first spell can be trivialized with anything, and Echo Chamber is semi-routable depending on her movement. Requiem will always be shitty with everything, but whether it's worse than Benben's third non with MarisaA is debatable imo.

You get a free boss summon when you hit 100k, 300k and 500k spell score. This also removes the enemy boss from your screen.
Spell score is reset when nothing is destroyed on your side of the screen for a few seconds (See the bar under your spell score). It's very important to be able to reset your spell score, since it lets you send over the boss to your opponent. Early game, I'd recommend resetting at 100k points, and just keep going from 0 to 100k over and over. As the game gets more intense, it'll get quicker to build up spell score, and you can go all the way to 500k. As an advanced strategy, try to hit the spell score thresholds just after your opponent, so that the boss stays on their side all the time.
For scoring, it can be better to not reset, since you get bonuses for being at max spell score, (999k), but this means that you can't get rid of bosses easily. Good luck!

Can anyone explain to me how how the cherry system works in PCB? The wikia says you get a shield after reaching a certain amount of points, then I noticed you can clear the whole screen by getting hit during this supernatural border period, is there a downside to doing that? Do you get more points by not getting hit?

>> No.26259369

>>26259231
Yeah, you get more points for finishing them, but IIRC you get them more often by cancelling them right before they end

>> No.26260109

>>26259231
You get a shield after getting 50,000 cherry points
You get cherry points by collecting cherry items (closer to the top of the screen the better), hitting and grazing (unfocused gain more than focused). Breaking borders turn all bullets into cherry items and autocollect them. Capturing spell cards also increase the gain from shooting/grazing.
Letting them run out normally gives you bonus points

>> No.26260116

>>26259231
You can cancel them anytime by hitting the bomb key. If you finish them, you do get more points, but if you're playing for survival, it's better to cancel them when they're about to end. This way, you get some cherry points back. The amount you get depends on how many bullets there are at the screen at the moment. The more you clear, the more points you'll get.

Seconding what the others said. At your stage, it's probably much more important to consider where you are looking at the screen, and what you are looking for. Raw reaction time is secondary to filtering out the relevant information to react to.
Pic related. I don't think that thinking in terms of these different "reading windows" will improve your dodging, but it's good to get into a mindset of being somewhat aware of where you are looking while you dodge. Don't be ashamed to look up guides online where people describe their approach to dodging certain attacks (looking at raw replays will only tell you what kind of movement people do to dodge, but not how they read the bullets).

If you want PCB to feel easier than EoSD, I'd suggest looking up how other people do the stage 4, 5 and 6 bosses, because without a good strategy, PCB won't feel easier than EoSD.

Most people will tell you to start from Touhou 6 Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (EoSD) and work up from there. Probably skipping the decimal games: the decimal shooting games ("photogames") are pretty difficulty and can be saved for later, while the fighting games are fighting games.
Why 6 and not 1? Touhou 1-5 run on PC98 and need an emulator, and the series also did a soft reboot when transitioning to Windows, so much of the earlier games aren't canon. Not that story matters much. The first three games are also a bit "special".
Why start with 6 if story doesn't matter?
It's just a good game with no difficult mechanics and straightforward dodging, so it's suitable for beginners.

Some people swear by controllers, but most people use keyboards. It probably doesn't matter much. You'll have to use some external software to rebind the buttons on your controller to keyboard presses.

>> No.26295490

>>26293170
nah. gameplay-wise they're independent, and story-wise they're mostly independent with some recurring characters (it's usually just banter in the games themselves; omakes and print works have the lore). if you're looking for entry points, 6-8 are good, 6 being the first windows game and sort of a soft reboot for characters and such. but really you'll have to drop a few credits to know which games appeal to you: with unique mechanics and patterns, they end up playing very differently from each other, and everyone has their own favorites. only other thing is that you'll probably need vpatch, since the older games tend to have input delay on modern oses.

i haven't used the xbone controller, but generally the best input device is the one you're the most familiar with, as long as it's decent quality. there are pros and cons to each, but keyboard, dpad, and arcade stick are all viable, and all are used by different high-level shmup players.

I think starting with LLS is not a bad idea either
The game is arguably the easiest in the series so it works well for easing new people into the games.
It's not THE first touhou game but it's the first one to have basically all the hallmarks of windows touhou (reimu/marisa shots, shift focus, complex scoring system, 6 stages + bosses)
Plus you really get to see ZUN's style evolve well, which is something I regret missing out on since I just started all over the place.

Anyone knows how to deal with Orin's wheel attack on Lunatic? I heard they are aimed to your right but when I try streaming the pattern, it just feels fully random.

Is it really aimed?

>> No.26383037

>>26377299
It's only very slightly to your right, as in close enough to hit you if you don't move. Otherwise you could just stay under her the whole time.
Listen to the sound of her firing her wheels, make a mental note of where you are at that time, and remember to not be there when the wheels arrive (dodging left is easier, because it's aimed to your right). It's a consistent rhythm, so if you can get into a pattern of staying under her->dodge wheel->go back under her->dodge wheel and repeat, you can end it pretty quickly.

ReimuB is an improvement because homing shots are way better suited for stages than forward shots are and she has a small hitbox. Her bomb isn’t that much worse and it doesn’t hinder your movement. ReimuB is also better suited for Yatsuhashi than MarisaA is for Benben, so you’ll probably bomb less often in stage 4.

Damage-wise, MarisaA will be slightly better thanks to her shotgun, but her flamethrower can’t reach the top of the screen if you’re at the very bottom. And let’s be realistic, how often are you going to be 10 pixels under the boss at any given point? The only attack I can see where MarisaA > ReimuB is Sukuna non 2.

It was OK for a game jam game: it's one of the better shmups made during those 2 weeks, probably because it was made in danmakufu so the creators could focus on the actual boss attacks rather than developing an engine.
I played it on normal, and I'd guess the difficulty was about on par for a harder stage 4 boss? You'll have no problems clearing it, but some spells may be difficult to cap.

There's your problem. Most secondaries don't actually play Touhou. Seriously though, EoSD plays more like the PC98 games but the biggest thing is it doesn't look like a PC98 game. China's patterns, for instance, don't really look like PC98 patterns, esp with the increased color limitations. Remilla's patterns also feel much more different aside from like maybe Mountain of a Thousand Needles. Sakuya has space moving gimmicks and Pachouli's patterns are really all over the place.

I strongly disagree. The music is great, the girls are very cute and there's lots of fun in them.
For example, I'm not really a fan of PoFV, but I really enjoy playing PoDD. The simplicity and smaller area make it more enjoyable to me and one of my favourite extras is the LLS one; difficult and fun.

They're also interesting, as a part of Touhou's history. You get to experience ZUN's experiments with the series in the first 3 games and how they paved the way for the modern games (SoEW for example is very different from not only the Windows ones, obviously, but even from LLS and MS).

Try to play in a way that minimizes the ratio of frustration to triumph.
Use the practice patch. When you fail something you think you should have managed, grind it a bit in practice. This will turn failure into success, as you improve your weak points.
When you encounter something you don't think you should be able to manage, bomb it. This way, you get much further, and you also don't die with bombs in stock - both of these minimize frustration.
Ideally, you should view improving in danmaku as a worthy goal in itself, and not just something to be done with so you can get back to drawing. It's also good to remember that everyone at all skill levels mess up a ton; making mistakes is part of the process.

Did some tinkering and was able to fix my lag issue (select fast input polling in config.exe, go figure), as well as test IN and find that I don't have any input lag with vpatch. I think installing vpatch on LoLK would reduce its lag even more, but it doesn't seem to work with the Steam release.

I know next to nothing about GNU/Linux so I dunno if this information helps, but for the record, I have version 5.16-1 of wine and 3.6.15-1 of lib32-gnutls, and I use xfce as my desktop interface. I've heard people say certain DEs add some latency.

LoLK is my second favorite in the series. It sort of continues IN/Bougetsushou's story, which I liked since I'm a big fan of IN. The pointdevice gimmick works quite well and lends itself to some fun patterns while mostly being forgiving, sans some lategame examples, a bit of scarcity with checkpoints, and rather long respawn times. Legacy mode is largely devoid of gimmicks and is a neat challenge that makes bombs actually useful. The soundtrack is also amazing.

HSiFS and WBaWC are just okay, to me. HSiFS goes back to the standard points resource system from older games, but also gives you a sub-bomb called a season release. WBaWC's resource system is essentially a fusion of TD spirits and UFO's, well, UFOs. I like, but don't love, the soundtracks, and most of the patterns are fine but I'm not a fan of the gimmicks, especially WBaWC's.

Given you like TD, I think you'd enjoy WBaWC, especially if you also like UFO. I'd say HSiFS is most similar to PCB and maybe MoF in the later stages, although harder and less lenient with resources than both. That said, certain character/option combos (particularly Aya Fall) can make farming lives VERY easy.

As for other games, I haven't played any of the spinoff games extensively, so I can't really recommend anything else, sorry about that. I'm not sure it matters that much. I got Cherry Reds (pic related) because I read somewhere that those would be "the best" for shmups, but I'm not a big fan even after half a year.
The Cherry Reds are so sensitive that I have to lightly tap the key to do fine adjustments, but it's very common that I hold the key for just a little too long, or that I tap too lightly so that it doesn't register at all. I can't seem to get consistent.
I can imagine Cherry Reds being good for the bomb button, where you just want to press as soon as possible after making the decision to bomb - and that this is why they are considered the "gaming" switch - but for precision movement, they are not really working for me.
My feelings are that a short activation distance is not that relevant for Touhou, since you are not moving your fingers to press new keys and thus you can always hold your finger slightly above the point of activation. I'd guess this makes the type of switch you use largely irrelevant, as long as you are used to it.
It may also be that I'm just a shitter who hasn't been able to learned to use a good mechanical keyboard after using normal keyboards for years.

Just stop being an EOP. Language support is the least of the issues anyway; the older games don't even run properly on newer version of Windows without third-party fixes. eosd lunatic strat. spoilers for diy purists.

this is for when meiling is low on the screen, since the standard way becomes a tight squeeze. pick any gap roughly beneath meiling and hold shift and left. it's consistent at any rank, but it only works with reimu and only at about this vertical distance. picked a replay where i started moving too early to show that you'll make it even if you cut it closely. using this strat also means that, with reimu, there's no need to consider stalling at the end of the previous spell to end it when meiling is higher on the screen.

disregard. i'd delete and repost later with revised info but it's too late. i thought i'd tested every possibility, but after messing around a bit more i found an instance where it won't work with reimu - when you pick the first gap in a line and move really late, the third kunai can hit. i think it'll still always work if you pick the second gap (like in the webm), since there'll only be two instead of three kunai on the right side, but i'll need to test more to be sure. it's still promising, but it's not as stated where any gap gives 100% consistency.

sorry about the misinformation.

>>27278887
same hitbox size in eosd, but the speed difference is an issue. you can also hold down at the bottom of the screen, but now marisa is too slow instead of too fast. in that case, if you're a bit late in moving, the second kunai can sometimes hit and the third kunai regularly hits.

i shouldn't have said that it doesn't work with marisa, since you could get consistent with the timing, but there's less leeway on the timing. probably better to just use the standard method, going wide if a larger opening is desired.

You won't get a straight answer for anyone, but here's my take
Excluding touhou 3, which is like PoFV in terms of gameplay and not really comparable
LoLK is extremely difficult patterns wise but yes the game gives you an absurd amount of resources to mitigate the hard stuff and then some. Especially with Reisen and Sanae, where you hardly need to even play the game at all.
UFO is kind of similar territory, however you do have to work harder for those resources so must people consider it generally harder than LoLK although the patterns don't quite get to the same level of craziness.
DDC is also worth mentioning, it is another game that has absurd resource generation but difficult patterns to compensate. With the weaker shottypes, the game becomes easily as hard as LoLK or UFO.
SA is absolutely brutal on the lower difficulties, such as easy mode, normal mode, and hard mode, but somehow it's lunatic mode doesn't really scale up all that high. Still, it's a tough 1cc on lunatic, there are a lot of tricks you can do with the game however if you choose to seek that out.
As sort of a wild card in this argument there's also EoSD, which has some really, really hard stuff, and a rank system to boot. However, it's first three stages are pushovers, and bosses have rather squishy healthbars that get obliterated with bombs.
Here's my scrub opinions on difficulty considering all the following.
For a lunatic 1cc, any shot type goes:
UFO > EoSD > MS > SA > DDC > IN > HSiFS > PCB > LoLK > MoF > WBaWC > TD > LLS
To play perfectly (LNN):
LoLK > EoSD = UFO > other stuff im not good enough to rank

Decided to forgo beating LoLK on legacy for now because I've got nothing to prove, and wow, HSiFS is an excellent game. Benign gimmicks, clear ramp-up in difficulty, fun but fair spellcards, superb soundtrack, just really polished overall. Some people probably say it's too easy, but I'm not a stickler for difficulty.

>really polished overall
Okay now, I like the game, but it had some glaring bugs that never got patched, like being able to hit Okina during what was supposed to be a survival card, or Mai and Satono breaking spell practice.

how are the vs. or the half games considered in /jp/ or just in general

PoFV and PoDD specifically, but also curious about StB and DS

I'm actually really enjoying PoDD for a 98 game, and StB is stupid fun fuck cirno in that game

A lot of people seem to not like PofV because the overall presentation is halfassed, but the gameplay itself is great. That said, some people even quibble with that, because you're not really going head to head with a sophisticated AI, you're just trying to outlast a machine for a few minutes.

Yeah, don't abuse the quote function, for one.
Do you expect a different answer from every other time this gets asked? Learn basic universal techniques like streaming, know the specific mechanics of the game you're trying to clear and how to use them, practice the parts you regularly miss, learn from your mistakes, don't get flustered, don't be afraid to bomb. Watch replays if you want to. It may take a while, but you'll keep improving if you stick with it.

>don't be afraid to bomb.
Playing Final Fantasy has ruined me by not using Elixirs ever because I might need them later
does anyone else have that mentality when using Bombs even on the state portions?

I'm starting with MoF where you can just spam bombs as you wish but I enjoy the challenge of not using them

I used to have that problem a long time ago because of RPGs as well. I got used to using bombs more often when I thought about how dying without using all my bombs first was a waste of 2 bombs (depending on the game).

This is one of those universal things like the other anon was talking about but didnt mention specifically: dont ignore score. Its not just there for weirdos who are super good at the games, getting extra lives from scoring can make a huge difference and be what turns a failed run into a 1cc.

>> No.27452139

Keep in mind that's only true in 6, 9, 10, and 16 though.

>> No.27461588

>>27458459
It's also pretty easy to max out on score lives without trying too hard, at least in 6, 9 and 10. 9 might be a bit tricky on normal, but you can usually get all your extra lives without using any scoring strats on lunatic.

>> No.27463561

>>27461588
I don't know about that; if you're just flailing around in 10 without knowing how the faith system works, it's easy to miss out on one or two lives.
