As much as this ideal of "doing without being addicted" is respectable, it is rare. Many addicts of all types do not believe themselves to be addicted. The old "I can stop any time I want" line.

All the same I don't really buy the "smoking makes you calm" thing. It may make you inactive, it's a depressant after all, but I see smokers get MORE aggressive in personality almost every time. Mostly a matter of opinion, I suppose.

Well, smoking makes your brain produce chemicals, the kind that makes you feel calmer and better, that's a scientific fact. Now, if someone gets addicted to the feeling, whenever they aren't smoking, they'd get easily heated up, and that invariably happens since the effects lessen with the habit.
Still, you most likely know you aren't addicted when you don't make a habit out of it, nor feel a need.

Also, your addict line applies to more than just smoking alone: unhealthy foods, unhealthy lifestyle, etc. There are people who say they can stop eating junk food any time they want, but choose not to because it's so convenient. This argument can be turned in many different directions, and doesn't apply solely to drugs.
