Hey encoding bros. I have my settings at Constant quality 22, slow preset, and the resulting video is pretty identical to the source, but the size decreases aren't that great. Like a 5.50gb vid will squeeze into a 3.7 one and it took 8 hours for that one. Is it just that some videos convert better than others? Or are there some settings I should mess with, like a higher RF or different speed preset?

Im a noob at this and I use avidemux with nvidia hvec and 1500kbps high quality setting. It goes from 6 GB to 1.5 GB for example and the quality is better than the versions of the same size you find out there. Still perceptible the differences with the original vid but it only takes 1-1 and half hours per vid.

This depends on the codec and how good your PC is, as well as how well things get decoded. Generally speaking, the more efficient the encoding is (=smaller with same quality), the longer it will take. And then it depends on how you decode it.

Has something to do with how efficient encoding generally only saves "changes" in picture, so when you instantly seek to a specific position, the player needs to actually render several seconds to get the full picture. To get it even smaller, there's usually more computing power needed, and these seconds will take even longer to render.

Your case is most likely a mixture out of .mkv serving as a container for a better codec than mp4 (generally used to be compatible with all kinds of things and not very efficient), and VLC sucking at decoding that on top of it, leading to some differences with mediaplayers. mkv!=mkv though. Anything can be in there. One of the newer players there, av1 (no, not adult video 1), is likely to not even play on old potato machines, but is quite efficient. Even that can be in mkv (though probably wont be for stuff like this, as encoding takes a loooong time)

Is 2774kbps much lower than the 1080p files you usually encode? It probably isn't, so I'd guess you have to check for visual differences for an explanation of why this input is different.

I'm not sure to be honest. I would just seek out the bigger filesize videos to encode into h265 to save space, like >3.5gb, but now I'm running low on those so I tried encoding a 2.16gb video to see if it would squash it down, but it ended up increasing size. This next video I'm gonna try is a 3.7gb h264 4400kbps one, so I'm hoping/expecting to see some decreases in size.

rather than just the CRF, if you really want to squash the file down to what you feel is an appropriate size, couldn't you give it both the CRF and a target bitrate, like you would with making webms?
