Somethng similar happened to me.

I was eating lunch with this dude. A couple of pretty japanese exchange students came close. I started a normal conversation with my broken japanese, because I wanted to test myself. Then the guy started blurting out about anime, pulled out his laptop and then showed Ebichu to them. The two of them looked at him funny and went away.

I denied all knowledge of anime/manga or whatever it might be from that day onward.
