So it was pointed out to me that gene starwind will wink for minutes at a time during episodes of outlaw star. Almost directly after that I started playing IaMP and noticed winking is also common for the characters' poses during conversations, and it's all beginning to drive me a little crazy. Is it a japanese thing that's just culturally different from the west, or a poorly thought out anime expression that ignores how awkward it is to close one eye for more than a quick bit?

also, more examples of weird winking and other gestures/expressions that don't seem to have basis in reality.

People have never winked at you before?

In anime and visual novels they don't so much wink as stand there with one eye closed for a long period of time.

Winking is popular in Western media too, but no, people don't really do it in real life.

But it's really annoying; it's like someone's asking to be sucker-punched and cunt-punted at the same time.

only times i can think of is a quick wink for innuendo/"just trust me", something longer only if they've just woken up and are fixin' to go back to sleep or have just been struck in the head and are rubbing the wound, and all of those feel natural to me.

i only wink stealthily to tell someone to "play along"

I tried winking in front of the mirror. My eyelid wrinkles up. Not like on the pictures of some japanese girl in front of a webcamera winking.

Characters who always have both eyes closed*.

*Some of them do open their eyes on extremely rare occasions.
