IOSYS is like the living definition of one-hit wonderful. Case in point: Cirno's perfect math class is the only song that anybody can name on their 9th album. Similarly, Overdrive, Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, and pretty much every song with a world-famous flash cartoon come from otherwise mediocre albums.

I won't deny that each album has at least several songs at are fun to listen to (and they're rarely the super-hyped flash animated ones either), but IOSYS has a pretty low batting average, as almost every album has an equally large number of songs that are unbearable to listen to. Most remixes fall into this category.

I really did like the Reitaisai 5 album, it doesn't have any real weak points, it's fun to listen to all the way through, and none of it feels repetitive. It also doesn't any remixes.

As for why people hate IOSYS, there's all of what I listed to make people believe that it's mediocre (not inaccurate, I'd say it's par for the course as far as doujin goes). However, unlike a lot of mediocre groups, IOSYS is really over-hyped. People hate IOSYS for the same reason they hate Halo: It's okay and I can enjoy it from time to time, but the fan base is absolutely intolerable. Also, the things I like least about IOSYS are repetitiveness and remixes (which sort of go hand in hand), and it doesn't help that they have several albums that consist of nothing BUT remixes.

Other than the Reitaisai 5 album, most of the IOSYS albums that I find enjoyable are non-Touhou albums. Most people here are mainly into Touhou, so chances are that most people here only see the worst of IOSYS.

>> No.2600245

I've never liked them. I listened to all of their stuff a few times after downloading that huge Touhou music torrent, but I could never get into it. Their music is probably my least favorite out of all the Touhou music I've listened to.

But of course according to IOSYS fans if you don't like them it must be because you hate popular things.

This is true. The vast, vast majority of Touhou doujin albums have one or two good songs with a bunch of other tracks that are pretty bad. However, there are still some artists whose albums consistently good. dBu and Crow's Claw come to mind.

Our village of honest men originally consisted of only eight people.
We all picked up and moved to a mountain in the east. Two years of,
well, utterly boring daily life passed us by.
One day, one of us found a little hole in a peach tree.
Yes, that was the day we were lost in this paradise.
And right away, I stopped being human.

As the most curious one of our group, I hurried straight away into the depths of the forest.
There, I was stopped by a mysterious clown, which seemed to be more than
happy to hand over the Branch of Hourai. The moment I took hold of it, my
body and head separated from each other. I found myself unable to move,
so I was never able to see my friends again.
After that, there were seven honest men left.

In the morning, I could see a shrine maiden in red and white dancing far above the ground.
As the fastest among our group, I was long entranced by that most vigorous of dances.
Eventually, it began to rain, and by the time I came to my senses,
The shrine maiden had disappeared.

I didn't notice when it stopped raining. The shrine maiden had been soaked completely
through, and it was as if she'd melted away into the rain. As I had been watching her,
the rain had become a veritable storm, and I, the most beautiful one, was taken
captive by the clowns. Just then, the clowns disappeared into the storm,
and I was unable to return to where the others were.
After that, there were six honest men left

That night, the six men held a foreign-style party. I, the youngest, had
never had sake or opium, so I found it all to be terribly boring.
I secretly snuck away from where the party was, but in the darkness
I was caught by a sinister clown. I was immediately beheaded.
I would never again be capable of even boredom.
After that, there were five honest men left.

I ran until I couldn't breathe anymore. Being the coward of the group,
I was so afraid of this paradise. This was only to be expected, but no
matter how far I ran, I couldn't find a way back to our home.
All the people I cared about had disappeared, and I thought I had no more
reason to live, so in my despondence I threw a rope over a branch and hanged myself.
... yet somehow, I'm still conscious. Was the rope too weak? ...
I, the coward of the group, have been reborn. I have nothing to lose,
so why don't I try pretending to be human just once more?

When we awoke, the five of us found ourselves in darkness. If there was one
thing I could say, it was that we seemed to have been captured by mysterious clowns.
The other four were coming up with childish escape plans. As the wisest of the group,
I knew they should stop, but I found myself unable to say anything.
The four carried out their plans as expected, but contrary to my expectations
they were successful. After that, I was never able to escape.
I killed a lot of time alone in an endless darkness; at one point, I sensed a
presence behind me, but I had given up. Something hot prodded into my back.

Our escape was a great success. We thought we were amazingly clever,
and decided to head back to our new abode in this paradise.
It never occurred to us to distrust any of the others in our group.
We were all honest men. We all got along so well ...

This paradise had erected a perfect building to act as our home.
An old-looking, western style building deep within the forest always
happily served us. But there's always a lot of food waiting for us, and
we can only ever go through half of it.
Our group of honest men had fallen to half strength at some point.

Every afternoon, we'd have tea time. And every time I'd

Maybe that's because of the love potion ...
I, the most beautiful of our group, fell in love with a beautiful
pierrot, and fell asleep in a state of bliss.
After that, there were three honest men left.

I very clearly saw my friend, who was poisoned. There's no way it was
suicide. After all, I picked out the right coffee and brought it to
everyone's rooms. I didn't tell the other two about his death.
He never ate or drank anything I, the most wary of our group, didn't
prepare myself. I desperately tried to stay awake until they were both asleep.
I entered each of their rooms and locked the doors. Yes, I suspected
a particular one of the two.

--->The sound of a spike being pounded into a tree rang out from somewhere
close by. <--- Just which of them is doing it? My face contorted in terror in
the darkness. My hands and feet throbbed in pain in time to the sound. It
was just like they were being nailed to something. I thought I should talk
to a medium, but then I realized something.
That's right, I realized I was being nailed to a tree, and I couldn't move.
Just which of the two was doing this to me?
Then, the final nail went through my forehead.
At that moment, I saw the face I expected to see.
All light completely vanished, with no time for me to cry out.

I, the earliest riser of the group, was already on death's door.
There was something in this morning's ham and eggs. I must be pretty
dense for the group to have gotten down to just the two of us without
catching on. It must have all been that person's doing, who killed all
the others in fits of madness.
Well, anyway, it's already too late ...
Seems like I saw a shrine maiden at some point. Was I just imagining it,
Or was her hair really that blonde?
In exchange for my life, it seems that soon only my wish to see that
vision again will be granted.

After that, I, who have been reborn, was assailed by intense drowsiness
yesterday evening. My head felt like it was being split open. I can't remember
anything about yesterday evening, but it feels like I had a long dream. It
would have been even better if I didn't have to face the reality before me ...
What does it all mean? One was poisoned with coffee, one was nailed to a tree,
another went and hanged himself ... I can't believe it.
I got the chair and rope ready, and finally mumbled to myself.
If I died last, then only the coffee poison death could ever have worked.
In other words ... is that how it is?
That must be it.
There must have been something in my dinner.
Oh, whatever, I'm the last one left, I'm all alone.
I don't have any attachments left to such a world full of liars.
This time I tied a good, strong rope to the ceiling and kicked away the chair.
This time, my body didn't fall all the way down to the ground.

Once upon a time...

In a magical forest, in a far-off land, there lived a dollmaker. The dolls she made were beyond compare- a look would reveal no seam or joint, and a touch would bring the soft feeling of skin. They would move as she willed them, walking, jumping, even dancing around in merriment if she so felt like it. So skilled was she with the puppetry that naught a finger on her own hand need be lifted to care for her cottage.

However, this wasn't enough for her. She so desperately wanted her dolls to move on their own, to think, and feel, and have dreams of their own. Her studies were tireless, her works inspired and grand- but still her dolls stayed just dolls.

Over the years, her wish and her dream sank into the walls, the floor, even the very air of the forest beyond, but it all remained unanswered. Then, one day, all that work, hope, and love came together just so...

A doll that had sat on a shelf, looking over a grassy field beyond the window, was the first to move. It blinked once, then twice, then got up and stretched its little arms high. It took a step, then another, then laughed most merrily. It could move! It could sing, and dance, and skip across the floor as well as any child could! Soon, more dolls got up, some confused, some scared, but the first was joyous and knowing, and did comfort and help her new sisters.

>> No.2601134

Soon, all the dolls were up and about, some getting started on the much needed cleaning, others heading out to deal with the thick weeds that tangled about the cottage, and a few simply standing still to take in the feeling of being alive. The first doll worked open the door to the maker's bedroom, and bounced onto the sheets to give her the good news.

But she didn't get up.

She couldn't get up.

The long years of trying, all the work she had done, had taken from her youth, vitality, and, at long last, finally life. Nothing remained but dust and bones. The little doll fell back, her little heart nearly broken under the sorrow. The dollmaker couldn't hug her, or talk with her, or sing to her. But she was a well made doll, and could do still do one thing for her maker.

So she cried.

I LOVED IOSYS at some point. Then I realised that they were overrated and there are better circles like SYNC.ART's, Cool&Create, =NeutraL=, Silver Forest, TaNaBaTa etc.

SYNC.ART's has good vocals and great music especially when composing rock.

Cool&Create is awesome in remixing and vocals (Nitori's epic themesong changed to a sad song about a lonely youkai?) but I'm not too fond of the techno/trances beside Night of Nights.

Silver Forest is the anti-IOSYS. They compose more serious songs than moe songs, in the same ratio IOSYS makes moe songs to serious songs.

What's up with =NeutraL= and their songs differing so much from album to album?

TaNaBaTa's great. The male vocals are great in contrast to the other circle's female vocals.

Innocent Key is an exception for me since they actually CAN make serious songs like GrilledBird and Jealousy at the Theme Park to counter Touhou Sweets and Touhou Holy Water (a.k.a urine) Festival.

I'd have to admit that I enjoy Eastern Bubbling Underground tho.

Everytime IOSYS releases a promotional video for their new album, I feel like hey've jumped the shark. Especially when the blindly Touhou loving idiots on nicovideo go crazy over nonsense like Cirno's Perfect Math Class.

But when I listen to the CD proper, it very often happens to surprise me with a couple of songs that are good or sometimes very good. Except for the album of the song I previously mentioned. That CD was just awful through and through.

Ultimately it all comes down to taste, but I'd say that 55% of the IOSYS hate just comes from a bunch of internet cool guys.
