Finished TRT, it was pretty fun. I'd say it's a bit better than Higanbana, definitely less repetitive, plus the OST was an absolute banger. Oh yeah and Alice is absolutely a 4chan user and calls people faggots all the time.

Country Girl: Story about how this group of friends that used to be pretty close got separated. Most important ones are Mikihiko, who's became an incel nerd that never leaves his room and plays online dating games all day after he got rejected from college, and Keiko, who's the one that reunites the group back at the end.

School Love: The dating game that Mikihiko plays in Country Girl. Main character is Ibito, a dude with superhuman agility that gets constantly chased by horny girls but just wants to sit in his room playing a COD ripoff all day. At the end a giant meteor comes down to kill everyone, and the only way to stop it is to have Ibito confess his love to literally any female, because it turns out he's the Chosen One. All the horny girls are hiding in shelters because of the giant meteor, but Ibito's best female friend appears and he confesses his love to her, gets Superman powers, and blows up the meteor with laser hands.

Vespio: The COD ripoff that Ibito and his friends play. A futuristic war world where humans are fighting space monkeys, full of classic R07 exposition that just... does not matter. The main characters are the Fox Squad, they just kinda do a bunch of random missions for a while, then turns out an upper millitary dude was a monkey spy so they kill him. Inside this world there's these mind care machines that put your mind inside a simulation of a peaceful country village (Country Girl), to prevent ptsd and all kinds of mental problems soldiers get.

Meta: This witch called Alice and Usagi (who's basically Sakutaro 2.0) discuss the three stories. Alice tries to figure out how all the stories connect, at the end it turns out all 4 main characters of each story control each other, so there's no actual "player". After she finds this out her brain blows up or whatever and we find out what the real Alice is. She's a girl that exists in the Country Girl world (which I guess is the real world?) and just sits in her room and plays games all day like Mikihiko does, those games being School Love and Vespio. Turns out she's super salty, because she faces the same problems Mikihiko does, but unlike him she doesn't have any real friends so no one is there to help her (though her lack of friends isn't because no one likes her, it's because she's a massive asshole that just rejects everyone). Then she hangs herself on cables and kills herself. But then all the characters appear and tell Alice that people won't help you if you're a cunt and you should try helping yourself first, she then opens her house's door and steps outside, but then after the credits it shows a shot of the doorknob on the ground like the house was broken into, so I guess she DID actually kill herself and the walking outside bit was more of a "should've done this you dumbass"?

The main theme is escapism. The characters escape to another world, but then their versions in that world want to escape into ANOTHER world. Alice being the culmination of that, cus she really likes playing the School Love and Vespio games, but in her narration she's super negative about them. Apparently she used hacks to get all her stats to max on SL (hence Ibito's super powers), but then she complains that the game is boring. She bought every season pass and DLC for the Vespio game, but says all the levels are the same shit with a new coat of paint and only gets her kicks from it whenever she's vandalizing its wiki.

Higurashi had a relatively small cast, so they all had good development. The secondary ones were nicely developed as well and had multiple relationships with different members of the main cast, so strangely enough none of them were satellites to a particular character. They were connected to everyone in some way.

Umineko had to divide the screentime between meta and gameboard, so many characters on both sides ended up with no development or as satellites to a particular main character. This was unavoidable because of the sheer number of characters on both sides.

RGD had a significantly bigger cast than Higurashi but still managed to keep it under control and develop everyone in half the time. That's quite the accomplishment. The satellite characters were really good and justified their existence in many ways. There's even a weird case where three characters are satellites to each other while simultaneously being connected to two different main characters, which makes them pretty important.

I wonder what Ciconia will do with such a massive cast. Focus on a particular faction in each phase? Fully develop a kette's leader and leave the other two as relatively developed satellites? Extend it to 8 phases? WTC6 as the sequel to Ciconia with a different name for plot reasons?

I don't enjoy the Umineko OST that much without the context. It's fucking amazing during the VN itself, while you are immersed in the story.

The Higanbana soundtrack is pretty beautiful even out of context, though. I could listen to it all day. Especially the calm tracks, like the one at the beginning of chapter 2 or that one rarely used track that sounds like it came straight out of a Higurashi slice of life scene.

I really enjoy the "feel" of Higanbana as a whole. Its really immersive and makes you feel like a kid again. There are so many cute lolis, and the whole atmosphere is slightly depressing. When you are a preteen kid, school tends to feels like that. I really like how it's portrayed in this VN.

I just re read Onikakushi. I found that at least half of the creepy Rena/Mion (but especially Rena) scenes are creepy even assuming they are actually being playful. Like, when they go to see how K1 is after not going to school, this bringing up Ooishi eating with him and he getting agitated during their conversation, cannot not be creepy. Especially when they just don't explain anything about it. I guess it was supposed to be kind of a joke, but not really because they really believe Ooishi is feeding him weird stuff... but they still don't do anything about it and just give him more reasons to suspect?
Rena is also in creepy mode more often than not, which is super stupid since she supposedly is the one that more or less understands what K1 is going through. Did she really think that during her Oyashiro-sama days she'd take well joking about stalking?
If they suspected something was wrong with him, they really made the worst choices possible.

What I loved most about Umineko were its genuinely thoughtful musings on truth, fiction, love, etc., and how deftly they were woven together with one another through the plot, characters, symbolism, and so on. I think Ciconia is already setting up a similarly strong thematic network, mostly centered around free will, or “freedom” more broadly:

For starters, there’s the “ciconia” metaphor itself. It gets referenced a lot, but also explicitly discussed by the Warcat crew in one of the fragments: are you more free being born with or without parents? Of course, in the AOU the latter means having your whole life mapped out for you Brave New World style, which is pretty evidently not cool. With regards to the former, Miyao’s daddy and mommy issues are the most obvious, with the prospect of him being a “program” almost an extreme version of the nature and nurture everyone receives from their parents and the struggle to self-actualize in spite of that inheritance. And there’s a lot made of age differences in general, from A3W boomers not being able to parallel process to how most people in the AOU only know people their age to even the differences between the slightly-older LATO girls and the rest of the knights.

Besides all the generational stuff, there’s a broader theme of being haunted by the past, and whether it’s better to forget it or not: both on individual (Gunhild and Aysha’s escapes from poverty) and societal (all records of WWIII being erased) levels. I predict a main thematic arc in Ciconia will be navigating between the two poles: going your own way, while also acknowledging, learning from, and even appreciating all that came before you and made you the way you are before you could will differently.

The prisoner’s dilemma, which creates situations where even if everyone wants to take some universally beneficial action they aren’t “free” to: mutually assured destruction/WALLS OF PEACE obviously, but also the situation among gauntlet knights where CPPs can’t come out despite them making up the majority.

Multiple personalities: agency is undermined when an “individual” is anything but.

Secret societies, conspiracy theories, and media manipulation all play on people’s feelings of powerlessness on a political/societal level.

Similarly, the distinction between “prediction” and “prophecy,” as well all the references to revelations and God/religion in general set up a lack of freedom in a more spiritual or metaphysical sense.

The VR mind-uploading stuff (and Jayden wringing his hands over Miyao’s schrodinger’s dick) brings up the human body itself as limiting.

And, of course, literally everyone’s motivation for becoming a gauntlet knight: “I just wanted to fly!” In all seriousness flight as freedom is pretty cliche but I like how r07 does it here.

Finally, we have the omnipresent chess metaphors and Miyao’s despair over being a “game piece,” and whether he can transcend the board like his old man. Standard WTC fare, but might go in a more subversive direction (e.g. exploring the uncomfortable implications of dividing people into “pieces” and “players”).

From all the language/translation symbolism (Kizuna, Vier’s lab, Sunya no sora’s vaguely Saussureian chorus) I think communication/"understanding" will be an important secondary theme, much like in Umineko. And maybe it’s just because Dr. Mario’s rant about dignity came in such an impactful scene, but environmentalism seems like it’ll be big as well. Especially with how topical it is, one of Ciconia’s main messages might be that yearning for the singularity/transhumanism is indulgent and irresponsible in light of the climate crisis.

But who are the traitors?!?!? (Assuming phase 1 really counts as all the question arcs and it’s currently solvable.) For the ABN and ACU kettes, I’ll follow what little consensus there appears to be and go with Stanislaw and an alternate personality of Rethabile’s, respectively. The COU is a bit harder, but my best guesses are Rukhi’s confident personality or Andry. For the AOU I really can’t decide between Gunhild, Chloevil, and perhaps Lilja but whichever it is, there’s obviously stuff up with the other two. There are almost certainly more moles than the four ninth prime ones; I’m convinced that Meow is working with Toujirou (and might even be Jestress), and it seems like Lingji is affiliated with Vier.

Adding to what you said, the other core thematic focus (unsurprisingly) seems to be "communication as relationship" again, only this time on a broader social level and the problems that brings with it. There's unreliable, probably manipulative technology, group stereotypes re-enforced by state propaganda and the kinds of social norms you often see in totalitarian societies (everyone keeping up a facade and playing their cards close to their chest, saying what they're supposed to say) and so on.
Higurashi limited itself to a simple setting and explored communication among a group of friends from the same age group and cultural background, Umineko broadened that scope to intergenerational communication and the relationship between an author and his readers, and this time the the terrain of communication is way more treacherous and the stakes are raised to the utmost.
It does have a lot of potential, though I'm sceptical as to how much of it Ryukishi will find time to explore if he's only giving himself three more novels to do it.
