There was a doujin eroge released recently, Saimin Jikken, which has gotten a ton of praise.

It's directed/produced by HARE, who also directed/produced the recently-released Shikigami no Seppun, also very well received.

The eyeless protagonist is actually surprisingly well characterised. He's the son of a priest, ends sentences in 南無 and tells people off with 喝.

Even if you aren't a mind control fetishist, give the game a shot. If you are a mind control fetishist, this is probably the best eroge you can play. It's amazingly well put together - the writing is extremely high quality; what you'd expect from Romeo Tanaka, seriously - and the pacing is rather good. I felt the latter parts of each route were weaker than the first part of the game, but nonetheless, it's very entertaining.

Except some commercial eroge companies know that the best way to spin money out of eroge is to get people who know what they are doing and leave them alone - especially scenario writers.

Typically, this also allows commercial eroge to be generally much longer than most doujin eroge (since the writers have the security of a backer that can keep them in food and shelter while spending months on a masterpiece); things like Tsukihime and Amaranto are the exception, not the norm.

"doujin" games like these are easier to translate, thats why more of them are released for us. they're less complicated programming-wise and often times aren't as long. Most professional VNs dwarf shit like umineko and F/SN, but we'll never play them because there aren't enough good fan translators and game hackers in the american community. The few professional translator companies like JAST who actually have the resources to localize lots of games seem to believe that the best business model is to only release the cheesiest porn-centric titles, probably becaues the licesnsing fees for them are cheaper.

It's not a rule, but usually professional games have already a userbase to satisfy, so a lot of cliche shit and archetypes get thrown in just to appeal to as much people as possible. You could say thay're slaves of marketing.
Doujin games, instead, have no expectations, no need to please; the only thing that makes a doujin game a good doujin game is the spark, the thing that makes you go "holy fuck, I want more!", be it great atmosphere, great setting, great characters, great music, whatever. Their target is to hook you, not keep you pleased, so they're more daring.

Still, for every successful doujin game there's like hundreds who are so shitty it's not funny, while the average for professional games is quite better, proof that having money is already half the journey.
