Finished Majo no Shokeibi. Very dense autism incoming

I haven’t played many doujin games so I had really no idea what to expect. I knew it wouldn’t be complete garbage, but I didn’t know if it would be very good, or to my tastes, or if it would be short and porny or anything else. After playing it, I can say that it was drastically different from the typical otome game, and I really liked that fact. It also seemed kind of strange that it was classified under otome. It just felt like a regular novel game with a sidenote of rape fantasies aimed at women, but this is also coming from someone who has no reference of what other games with these advertised themes are like. Like, you look at the tags and it’s shit that I usually avoid like the plague. I derive zero pleasure from seeing girls being degraded. The degradee in question would have to be a man.

I can read moon at a fairly decent pace, and even then, this game took a while to finish. On top of that, VNs usually don’t hold my interest enough to read for more than an hour or so at a time, but I spent many multiple-hour chunks reading this one. It was weirdly enthralling, and I was always wondering what absurd thing would happen next.

The art is not good, technically, but it grew on me. It’s charming in its own way. The characters were better in that sense and I didn’t need much time to warm up to them at all. Ryuuzou is a nice dude, and Yukiotome is very cute and very funny. I like how frank she is, and a certain nonsensical scenario she threw together at a party had me actually laughing out loud. I wish there was more to her, but alas, part 2 never. Seeing the MC Yaneko’s interactions with the girl friends she always wished for was really heartwarming, but there were of course sad memories in the balance and also the threat of whatever was coming next.

Regarding Zaijouin, whom my interest in me brought me to this game: He’s a scumbag. Disgusting. Lowest of the low. Most importantly, he’s pathetic and desperate. Like, how are you going to treat the girl you’re obsessed with looking down on like a pig and then be the one blurting out hentai lines instead, complete with hearts, at the drop of a hat? I appreciated the wild faces he made, they were gross and really added to the gap between his good looks/gentlemanliness and his depraved behaviors. One thing I liked about his presentation is that he is very clearly a bad man and there’s no sugarcoating that. Yaneko’s narration constantly talks about how creepy he is. I did feel bad though, every time something bad happened to Yaneko I’d be like “oh no, Yaneko, do your best” or “I’m sorry this had to happen to you”

I do have some questions and gripes, though. In the product description, it says that there are two endings. Is it safe to assume that the “true ending” is the one where オッドセイア and Yukiotome are just going home with no mention of Zaijouin? And, in what I can only assume is the Zaijouin end, which also seemed integral to understanding what might be the true end, all of Yaneko’s character development seemed to go out the window when she went back to him. There was such a solid and lengthy buildup, but where did the desire for revenge go? Kanata ended up being fine, but I don’t see how Yaneko would continue to roll over and become fetish fuel. I also dislike how Yaneko was wondering if there was something that made Zaijouin become so cruel, as if he could be redeemed somehow. Now THAT is what left a bad taste in my mouth. Kill him, Yaneko. I believe in you

Yeah, I wouldn't really classify Majo as an otome game—in the first place, it's unlike most other VNs I've read before, really difficult to put it into just one genre. It has very little romance(?), a big focus on the "side" characters, weird gags, a less-than-ideal love interest, and some extremely unsavory moments all rolled up into one. I have a few problems with the game not having enough scenes to flesh out certain characters/some parts being too short, but it was written in such a way that it made me want to read the next scene immediately (and I'm guessing that part 2 will flesh out some of the characters more). Really sharp pacing.

I read a bit of the demo of part 2 and was really surprised when they dropped the identity of the protagonist. Really, who's ever heard of a otome game with an ossan as the protagonist? What I loved about Majo was how charming the entire cast of characters were, even the small-fry villains and characters that only appear for a few scenes. The most moe character in the game was actually コネコエミール. Out of the witch cast, I agree with you on Yukiotome being extremely cute and a good friend to Yaneko. How she says almost everything with a straight face is the best part. The friendship scenes with Kanata and how オッドセイア eventually warms up and shows her more vulnerable side to her were lovely. The author really knows how to use those comfy scenes to hurt the reader later on.

If you go back to the scene where Kanata is missing from the restaurant, you can get a choice to look for her, which leads to the true ending. And what a fucking brutal ending it is, I have no idea how the author is going to lead into part 2 from that. I was really bitter going through the Zaijyouin ending because felt like H-scene spam along with Yaneko suffering and just putting up with it. Zaijyouin's ending feels like an extra "what-if" scenario when compared to the true ending rather than a proper ending. Though, if you go through the true ending you might start to prefer what happens to the characters in Zaijyouin's ending instead. As a whole, the true ending both gave me a sense of fulfillment and also left an unpleasant utsuge taste in my mouth.

Also, I don't know if you've been reading the short stories in the Giwaku section but some of them give a little more background to the characters. I didn't go through them until I finished the game, but they're worth reading. There's one short story there that made me go "what the fuck, did they really have to show that in a CG?". And there a few short stories that show more of Zaijyouin being pathetic and sometimes getting told off by other characters. They're really short and take only a few minutes to finish reading through, so no harm in reading them.

Sidenote: There's a short alternative timeline spinoff where Yaneko gets to bully Zaijyouin. It felt too short for me (there's extra stories, but they don't have much of Yaneko bullying Zaijyouin in them), so whether you think it's worth the price is up to you.

The character descriptions on the site are confusing though. It's hard to tell what the plot is, there's some kind of mix of in universe tokusatsu shows and actors but also an actual sentai team in the 'real world' of the story too (who are the same people?)
People have mentioned aliens in here a few times but I'm not sure there are any, the monsters in the story are people infected with a disease that makes them transform (everyone with orange eyes). MC no.1 gets turned into a monster at the beginning of the game which is what kicks off the plot.

Glad you enjoyed(?) the true ending as much as I did. It has a few sequel hooks that make me really wish for part 2 already, but it felt pretty conclusive. Kanata's last line right before she dies and the callback to the scene where she performs in front of Yaneko was horribly heartbreaking. This author is really good at putting you in the shoes of the protagonist and making you feel their rage/despair/etc. Also yeah, the scene where Yaneko is speaking to Zaijyouin right before she gets executed and he just is horribly confused felt extremely satisfying. Even if Yaneko couldn't complete her revenge, she did at least spend her last moments fucking with Zaijyouin enough to leave a scar on him that will last a lifetime. Thinking back to that scene, I'm wondering how the author will write Zaijyouin in part 2—the promo images make it look like he'll be suffering a lot of regret and guilt. I just hope he gets it in general.

That short story with Sora was awful and I don't know why the author had to include that CG. I guess it's a nice way to round off an ending like that—with even more suffering. One short story I really liked was the one where Zaijyouin is just seething at スモークフィル after he tells him how doesn't actually love Yaneko at all. Hebi no Cinderella is pretty good and entertaining story, even if you're not into the H-scenes. I think Majo left a larger impression on me with its memorable side characters, those borderline horror movie scenes with Zaijyouin, and extreme utsuge developments, but Hebi no Cinderella is the kind of story you can't stop reading. It has a nice mix of suspense, mystery, and cute slice of life moments until everything goes to hell. The author withholds enough information from the reader while also dropping enough hints in the story to keep it interesting. Sannomiya, the main boy, isn't as degenerate or pathetic as Zaijyouin (it would be hard to match his level), but he does do some heinous shit. He's also a little bit pitiful when you read about his past and see the events from his perspective. Oddly enough, he's pretty endearingly moe too—which makes it even worse when the protagonist's daily life comes crumbling down. Whether you're able to forgive him or not is up to you. I had some conflicted feelings about it, but the game doesn't just brush it off and go "it's totally fine, he loves you anyway so deal with it". Likewise with Majo, the second end is locked behind getting the first ending so that might warp your views of the characters a bit. And, this time around, there's an ending that can concretely be considered happy and a bit of romance if you're feeling burnt out by too much suffering. It's only a few hours long and has a competent story and good suspense, so I'd say it's definitely worth your time.

Devs, please just let me save at any point, I'm begging you. Also the port is pretty borked, what with poor resolution scaling and an extremely small font size. I'm also reading on the forums that the skip button may skip all text and not read text. I can feel the 2006 engine jank, even though a modern Steam port of the download digital edition would hopefully have fixed these issues. The font size is only an issue for the English text as well.

I think the main difference is that the galge MCs are often some bad ass guys and tend to have some more personality in the plot-heavy games, where in otome we just basically get a good girl everyone loves, who is a bland self-insert-ready template.

I think "galge" with the cooler mcs were intended to be more omnipandering (where romance is there but not the focus the plot is. for ex. There's been a couple stuff out there with protags with more personality like Norn9 and they're still shit because the writer can't actually write a coherent and compelling story. It all boils down to the lack of actually talented writers in the market with a lot of talented people satisfied with just making fanworks.

It's easy for something that has a mostly female cast become popular with guys, in the same way that stuff predominantly filled with guys attracts female fans. But apart from that, I think titles that seem popular with guys but seem to be aimed at the female crowd are actually from seinen/shonen magazines, like The Ancient Magus' Bride.

I do wonder how many guys got "tricked" into reading 10 Dance, which is basically a bl title running in a seinen magazine.

I've finished Shin route too. I'm not a big fan of his archetype, but the route was decent. It's ridiculous how much better story-wise it was than the Toma's one. There was actual plot, detective-like mystery, entire cast interaction, lots of events and proper resolution caused by effort(no falling diaries that magically solve everything lol).
In retrospect it's unbelievable how much Toma's route was fucked over. It's like writers did the interesting ending, had very vague idea how to get there and didn't even care to add anything fun in-between.
