The 7th typhoon of the season showed up yesterday far away from Japan, headed for inland China. Given the last thread was kept alive for two months, we'll have a majority of typhoon season take place while this one is alive.

2019 had 17 total typhoon-class storms most of which occurred between August and November, the most notable of which (for our threads) were Faxai (15) and Hagibis (19). 2020, in comparison, up to this point has been very quiet. There have been no storms that pass directly over mainland Japan yet, only a single tropical storm that crossed through the southern island chain.

Man, that really took a lot longer than it initially said. 15 hours in total for a mere 2.4gb - the first cut which is on the link below and is just the capture of the full scene, and then I'll work on a trimmed version from the same footage that should be less than 8 minutes. It's nothing spectacular, but I like listening to it. You can skim through to the middle for rainfall once it's processed.

I don't want to create a thread for this, so I'll ask here. Do you guys have any recommendations of documentaries or movies about Japan? It can be either about the Japanese society and cultural festivals or about some specific places or regions. Many years ago I've watched a documentary called A Life in Japan (it's free on YouTube), where a bunch of foreigners living in Japan talked about their perceptions of the Japanese society and culture. It doesn't need to be something made by gaijins though, I'd also like to see some made by Japanese people themselves.

Keeping a close eye on that typhoon and found some supplementary info:

>will be all but gone from Japan's shores by Sunday evening as it continues north

Couldn't even go back to look at the Makurazaki cam for high tide because most of the area (and surrounding prefectures) had a power outage. Stream stopped after 6pm and didn't pick up again until 5am. There are some cam placements in Saga、Nagasaki, and Miyazaki that were too dark to see anything. Also a 3.0 earthquake off the coast of Ibaraki as I typed this blob.

I saw train autism discussed as something with a low barrier of entry because the organization is already in place - compared to birdwatching or other hobbies, nothing in trains is spontaneous and there's no onus on the observer to try and discover things themselves. I loved the old Kabukicho but that building was apparently demolished. I've posted screenshots of the old locations many times and even screenshoted myself there. This is the cam has been changed since I last went there, looks like he has turned it to face the other way. Tbh it suffers badly as it's too high up, the cam isn't 4k and the view is simply inferior to what it once was.

The most recent Kabukicho I posted is pretty amazing desu, absolutely addicted to it. This and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEhIe2SDKso for people watching.

I was spending a lot of time on this one as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQYKarjjWi0

When you blow the above rail cam up on a 55inch TV as I do it looks absolutely amazing, you can get so many small details.

On Sundays you can see the seven stars Kyushu train. It leaves Hakata sometime around 4.20pm and 5.30pm Japan time. This is another great cam.

Where the hell did this come from?
I was looking last night at talk of a brewing storm in the Phillipines Sea, not even a day has passed and it's already near Kyushu. The shape looks subtropical there

Interesting, this one has a path that skews up the southeastern Honshu into the capital.

>> No.26708646

>>26708221
The path has been moving more eastward all morning.
Early it was more through Nagoya, so it might end up just swiping southern Honshu. But it doesn't look like too bad a storm.

indeed. no visible eye and winds below 50 m/s still, probably petering out to tropical storm soon.
guess it gives people a bit of a break, unlike the folks in SE Texas that are getting so many storm surges I'd just give up and put all my shit in an upstate house for the next season

I have an unlisted playlist that has an additional 1,100 videos in it that I'm slowly filtering into the public playlists too (there's a mix of Japanese and non-Japanese stuff in it). I was hoping with the 'rona that the level of this content would slow down a bit to let me catch up but that never happened, I guess because they're already used to wearing masks over there that it never really became an issue in the end.

>> No.26846787

>>26838632
I don't know if you can say that they haven't been affected by corona because JR has been suffering from low demand these past few months, but yeah nips definitely handled it well, unlike other countries with a even lower population density, Japan didn't have to do a total shutdown because wearing masks and the like were already socially enforced.

>> No.26856307

>>26846787
Japan just couldn't do total shutdowns, because of their laws. Still, people were told to and mostly they listened. If you think a lot of Japan wasn't closed, you are wrong. And it is not just foreign tourists that are missing. Though now that the government is saying "I-It is okay to travel internally now" a lot of people are listening obediently again and jacking off to how great GoTo is.

>> No.26862401

>>26856307
I honestly don't blame them for trying to start up internal tourism again.
This shit is hard on businesses. Especially tourist businesses. What can they do to pay the bills?
But watching the statistics, even though the number of cases started increasing late June, it peaked about mid August and has been on the decline again since.
Japan isn't going to manage a situation where they've eradicated the virus, but it doesn't seem to be out of control, either.

>> No.26876349

>>26862401
Yup. Japan has a lot more to lose in regards to small business. Any back street in Toyko has some small shop that couldn't stay open if they were told to take two weeks off yet still pay property tax and utilities.

I'm altogether very surprised in a good way that we're at September and things are still going alright in that regard.

I dunno. Unending walls of identical balconies reminds me of fucking Kowloon or the old USSR commieblocks. It's not nice to look at and not nice to live in, but that's life on a tiny island with over 100m population almost all of which are dumped into two cities.

>> No.27205796

>>27205623
What are you even doing on /jp/?
Not even full 10 million people live within the "Tokyo City" itself. That's hardly "all in two cities". You should first realize what a city actually is.
Second, houses are way more widespread and preferred in Japan than high apartment buildings. Even most apartment buildings would be like 2-3 stories high. If you think about it I think even you will realize a few of the possible reasons for that.
Third, there is no culture of decorating balconies or even doing things on them other than laundry. Though that has been slowly changing. So they are usually small and just for that, laundry.
And last, same-looking balconies and buildings exist all over the world, including any other first-world city. It is just how buildings usually get made and it makes sense. Plus when you are inside you don't care how much your balcony and general room layout is like your neighbor's.

>> No.27206032

Just a depressing aesthetic, that's all.

>> No.27206432

>>27206032
The "metropolitan" area includes many cities and several different prefectures, including parts that are considered "inaka". That is the 37 million number that you see people parroting like mindless idiots.
And the second city you are thinking of is probably Osaka, except this time it is not even in reality the Osaka Metropolitan area, but Keihanshin, which includes Kyoto and Kobe too.
Though in reality the second biggest city in the country is not Osaka, but Yokohama, which is part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area.
