Second, you comment on life experience, but one of the reasons matt's ideas resonate with me is that we are similar in the fact that we both chose paths outside the norm. The only reason all immersion cultist never learn Japanese is because they simply skip the learning part. That's also the reason why so many people from poor or immigrant families struggle with their host nation's language even if they live there over 40 years.

Just "listening" to stuff you like or trying to "speak" the language how you like means instant dekinai. You have to sit through those textbooks and learn the grammar, learn the vocab, write it yourself, hear it, and speak it yourself.
You DON'T need a teacher or a group, but you need to go into the langue as deep as you can. Textbooks are proven to be the fastest way of learning a language. They are organized in the most logical way.
Everything else other than textbooks is a time waste (Japanese requires RTK as well). Sure, you can "immerse" yourself to not lose interest, but immersion is not learning. It's just using what you have learned.

That's also the reason why all cults have retarded shit like "meditate" and other bullshit. You only need those psychological problem solvers when you have some deeper problems that are unrelated to Japanese. ive already saved every anilist posted in this thread so i could see how badly they all didnt make it years later

Ok. I recognize that a common suggestion is to not use anime and manga to learn Japanese. And I'm not. Or it's not my main route.

Last we went to Japan the only time I truly struggled was when I had to read. My speaking and listening is barely at a child's level but with a patient person I could manage. Even if I butcher my sentence structure or conjugate a verb wrong, usually with enough nouns and context communication was possible.

For reading...the written word doesn't "work" with you at all. So I realize I need to get much better, even fundamentally, on reading. Any progress would be good. That's the background.

I tried Doraemon (reason being it's for children) but would get caught up on a lot of the made-up terms. Neoglosims.

Yotsubato has worked out ok. I have to take the fewest breaks to look-up a word with that. That's not saying much. Granted it's extremely simple. Which were part of my concern in supplementing it.

I bought some Ebichu assuming I'd have no chance as it's a really adult manga, but it was easier for me than most. I guess it's the child-like speech... Just like Yotsubato.

Reading and can struggle through: Yotsubato, Ebichu

Tried and will have to get better: Doraemon, Kinnikuman, Naruto, Umaru-chan (I find myself basically feeding it into Google translate a page at a time. That's not reading).

Own but haven't tried: Liar Game, Made in Abyss, Goblin Slayer, My Roommate is a Cat.

On top of that I do have a bunch of magazines, but without the context clues manga gives I don't do all that well.

What I'm looking for is something with furigana, not a lot of made up terms or non-standard speech.

Also open to alternatives entirely. Using a combination of YouTube and James Heisig, primarily.
