2549323 No.2549323 [Reply] [Original]

I am now about to start making my fourth VN Tentacle Joel - Escape From Canada which is a direct sequel of my third VN and this time I shall now ask assistance from /jp/ especially Canadian /jp/s...

POV is a 10 foot tall green tentacle monster

Here's the story:
A huge explosion blasted you and an annoying 14 year old girl named Joel all the way to Canada. Your mission is to bring Joel safely back to US soil preferrably undetected since he is being chased by the Bureau of Paranormal and things and stuff... while fighting your natural instincts as a tentacle monster. And to make matters worse, they only have US$15 in their possession.

So I now humbly ask Canadian /jp/s

>How would you do it?

>What obstacles you might encounter? (Other than French speaking Canadians)

>Any other interesting situations they might encounter while on their way back?

>Other thoughts, ideas?

Mugen-kun is honest about his games. And you don't see him pretending that his games are the greatest OEL VNs ever like the KS team. Personally, that's something that I can respect.

The KS team can sure talk the talk and make 200 KS threads on 4chan over the past 2 years. But it turns out that they can't walk the walk when you compare their game to the few other decent OEL VNs which have come out in that same time frame.

I'll never understand why people get butthurt when KS's bgm is compared to the archetypal amateur composing of Key and TM games. It's even worse when they take it step farther and start defending the later as "professional". Being ambient eroge music, neither make much of an effort to go past generic New Age or pop progressions. It's like arguing there's a monumental difference between the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, when neither has ever written a song with more than three chords. It's not like we're comparing with an ost that's actually not bullshit, like Umineko or Sekien no Inganock.

Transcribed any Kanno music yet? Lots of cutting and pasting the same phrases with minor variations, right?

And once again, this isn't an insult towards her. Kanno's music isn't complex, but she is one of the most organized composers you will ever encounter. Yes, there is more to music than a billion notes, key changes, or tempo changes in one measure. It's all pointless when you lack proper organization anyways. This is admittedly one of the more difficult things to grasp when it comes to the music making thing.

I mean, just listen to the KS music. It's a nice amateur attempt, and it's actually mixed/mastered surprisingly decently. But aside from that it's the usual OEL VN music that's poorly organized. Also even some notes clash, then they just go out of key, and then the percussion makes no sense and now it's like I'm listening to the music I made 11 years ago when I was 14 years old.

How can you even compare the KS music to other games where the composers aren't even making these usual amateur mistakes?

>> No.2550008

1. He is on fire with obsessive, unquenchable rage for the product.

2. He's riding KS's wave of interest in order to gain more notoriety as a tripfag.

3. The game interests him quite a bit, but various factors keep him from admitting he likes it, causing him to complain about those factors in every thread concerning the game.

Number one seems unlikely because his posts seem, for the most part, devoid of cool or hot rage. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, we'll just absolve him of number two and arrive at number three, which seems to more or less fit his attitude up to this point.

Honestly, I don't know where to start. For one thing, as an actual musician, I don't need to transcribe pieces to detect how complex they are. Even with just one listen I can detect things like modal melodies, chord progressions, etc. You should be able to do this too.

Minimalism, for the most part, is characterized by pieces that have simple harmonic structure (like say, simple melody with basic triads arpeggiated in the bass) and simple progression with only a few types of chords in one key. Kanno is the exact opposite of this and, being one who enjoys emulating impressionistic and jazz styles, is about as harmonically complex as it gets when it comes to soundtrack music. Many Japanese composers cite Debussy and Ravel, but she's the only one that goes out of her way to imitate them. For example, listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jQhbhVy-28, and you distinctly hear the influence from Ravel's string quartet in F. This is one minute and thirty seconds, yet goes more places than most music you probably listen to by using a large set of chords of different type and quality and complex harmonic structure. Complexity isn't a matter of tempo changes, key changes, and a "billion notes", even if these things contribute. Complexity of a piece is determined by it's ability to go many different places in its progression, while remaining within the confines of tonality and meter. Until such a thing is realized, the difference between the great romantic composers and say, Dragonforce, will be completely foreign to you. Or if you think this emulation is too direct to demonstrate Kanno's ability, listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qnZwoI4ajo.. To anyone who actually knows anything about music, the difference between these and minimalist style of composing is so devastating that it's physically painful. I don't even know why I typed this when it was so goddam obvious.

I just really love indie/doujin games (either Japanese or Western). It doesn't matter if they're (in my opinion) good or bad games; I'll still participate in their threads. You know, sorta like this one. That's all really.

Like the other Anon said, I'm just the usual /jp/er who never accomplished anything in life, but I'm stilll passionate (obsessed) about all video games, anime, and music. Sometimes my passion comes out in too strongly or in the wrong ways, and I apologize if I have upset you or anyone here in the past.

I honestly only come here for the 2D/geek content. If I actually cared about trolling anymore, then I'd get rid of the trip and go back to being Anon. Hell I'd even stay on a different board where trolling is like shooting fish in a barrel (modern /a/). If I wanted "notoriety" I'd go whore up some game/music forum. That's a nice post about minimalism. Too bad I've never even described her music as that. I've completely ignored that word in my previous post because I have no idea where you got that from; I've never called her that.

And your part about transcribing honestly sets off another red flag. Just how artists draw from life to get better, musicians transcribe music and study it to get better. Yes, there are some things you can't hear until you sit down and analyze it note for note.

That Kanno song you linked is just so quick and easy to write down and reproduce note for note it's not even funny; it would take 30 minutes at tops. No, this does not mean that Kanno is a minimalistic composer. It doesn't mean that she is a lesser skilled composer either. Plenty of skilled composers create music in this manner.

>> No.2550272

Going to bed now, but this is a recent song for me that was a bitch and a half to transcribe. I'd say something like this is pretty complex. On a whole, this composer is much more complex than Kanno.

I don't know, probably the many times you compared the simplicity of her composing style to Mitsuda, who does, in fact, describe his style as minimalistic. Although this doesn't really matter, as such things can be simply heard in his works. If you didn't hide behind transcription when debating your fellows on the internet, you would have noticed this.

You know, VN music really shouldn't be this serious; I myself have found the music to be extremely fitting for the various scenes, and have enjoyed it quite a bit. A few things stuck out a bit, but then again, such things then to happen in any VN for me.

Overall I'd say, just listening to the music, that it's pretty much up to par with most VNs, albeit a bit more simple in nature.

I don't think this piece is as complex as you think it is. Share the transcription when you're up and I'll analyze it for you.

So it seems ZUN!bar doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to music. I wonder if he'll ever post that transcription for anonymous to analyze?
