So I'm kind of in a weird position. I consider myself decent at Japanese, nowhere even around the realm of fluent, but okay. I think I'm pretty good with sentence structure, I can read a few dozen Kanji at this point at the least, probably more, and I've known all of the Hiragana and Katakana characters for at least a year. However, I have next to no clue how to conjugation.

I know how to turn some things into past tense, that's easy especially with verbs, but there are a few things I struggle with. I'm just wondering what are the rules for the following conjugations?

Turning something into present tense, as in I am doing something now? I know you add っています but I'm not sure where. Do I just leave the Kanji and add it or also put the character after it?

What are past tense conjugation rules for い vs な adjectives? I think い is (Kanji)かったです, but what is it for な adjectives?

My experience with Duolingo: I have been using Duolingo for 24 days now (was already familiar with the app beforehand), spending between 2-4 hours/day on the app, often times on the higher end. I'm just starting chapter 3 (I've gotten gold on all the previous levels).

Pros:
Convenience
Repetitive (very useful for learning the Hiragana)
Good mix of exercises
You can hear the pronunciations! (Sure, maybe it's through a phone, but you can't get that through a book. I know there is audio with Genki but again, convenience.)
Tips sections are extremely useful
Extremely beginner-friendly
Introduces Kanji fairly early on (yes, pro)
Insane amount of content
Cons:
You don't learn how to write
The exercise types remain the same throughout each chapter
Can sometimes get away with not 100% knowing things (ie. ki, sa, chi all look similar to "5" and I'd mix them up sometimes)
Missing some really good grammar explanations that texts like Genki give
No vocab sheet (not a huge deal, just convenient)

Final thoughts:

Be proactive. Say things out loud, make an effort to fully understand concepts, read every tips section. This is an extremely good learning resource for anyone with zero knowledge of Japanese whatsoever.

My experience with Genki: My Genki 1 book just arrived yesterday and I'm a few pages in. This is my first physical resource for Japanese. My initial thoughts are simple: for someone that has zero experience in Japanese, this book is definitely not the first step. If I didn't know what I did from working with Duolingo, this book would be soooooooo over my head. There is good guidance, but Duolingo just blows this one out of the water when it comes to getting from step zero to step one.

Pros:
Includes a workbook and vocab sheet
Vocab pages are extremely useful
Good insight on topics like particles
Includes cultural notes
Mentions what words are often used vs. not often used
Cons:
Sooooooo many instances of sentences/passages with unfamiliar vocab that is either resolved rather quickly or mentioned later on in the book (my Duolingo work has proven useful here)
Should know how to write hiragana from memory for the workbook
English pronunciation is listed under the hiragana (I found myself reading these more than the hiragana itself which I didn't really like)
The included audio is in CD Rom format (maybe there is another format online? I haven't checked)

Final thoughts:

Has a lot of good information and even though the content is very simple in comparison to the rest of Japanese, you 100% need a slight foundation to work with if you want to effectively process this resource. I'm excited to continue pairing this with daily Duolingo work as well as put my writing skills to use. Lastly, I would have liked this book to include kanji from the beginning rather than sub in the hiragana for it. While it may be a bit complicated, I've found kanji, especially the simple ones, to be very helpful in learning Japanese through Duolingo.

Overall:

Duolingo is an amazing starter resource for getting from step zero to step one. It is only effective if you are proactive though. Period. You have to read the tips, sometimes over and over. You have to go back and repeat sections. It's easy to move to the next chapter when you unlock it but you have to ask yourself constantly, "could I pass a test on the previous section if I took one". As for Genki, I haven't worked with it much yet but my first thought is that this book definitely is the next step in my Japanese journey. I'm glad I started with Duolingo and wasn't totally turned off from the language with an overload of information that Genki could provide to a newcomer.

Hope this could help anyone looking into either of these resources for learning Japanese!
