I guess I could embellish more on the subject(s) of my sentences. I use a program called Tripper+, which works by running a series of crypt() functions on randomly generated data, trying to match what comes out with what you are looking for. By default, about 100,000 crypt()'s are run per second, but I heard that the limit can be overridden somewhere.

This is because libc's crypt is fucking slow. OpenSSL's crypt is fucking slow. Only JohnTheRipper's DES bitslicing code is worth it, which is what Tripcode Explorer uses.
