>The central theme of 幸福に生きよ! is so poignant in its simplicity
"Just be happy dude" is not a particularly good or interesting theme. It's not poignant in the least. This stuff is the weakest part of subahibi and it exposes how pretentious subahibi is; all the half assed pagan ramblings and Tractatus references never amounted to anything. In that regard it's closer to Evangelion than it is to Wittgenstein.
>that the ideas presented in many other works feel ineffectual in comparison.
How does a "simple" message make something else in a completely different work "ineffectual"? Moogy doesn't bother to expand upon this at all.
>Also highly successful at blending entertainment and religious/philosophical elements to create a story that is both meaningful and accessible.
Subahibi has terrible pacing issues and the idea that a visual novel where a little girl is raped by a dog is "accessible" is laughable.

The reality is the vast majority of references, whether it is to religion or to otaku subculture never amount to anything narratively in Subahibi. They're just that, references. The only connection Subahibi has to Wittgenstein is the solipsist implication that the world of Subahibi doesn't exist and every character in the setting is the same person, but all it has to say about this is "lol who cares what's real and what isn't, just be happy with the world you live in".

Now I like subahibi, it's a solid 7/10 visual novel. But great art it is not, insightful it is not and some grand adaptation of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus it is not. When Mamiya is just rambling about Nordic mythology, the world serpent and the Naglfar while sitting on Kimika, it doesn't *mean* anything and pretending it is, in Moogy's words, a "blending of entertainment and religious/philosophical elements" implies it has meaning that is never actually delivered on in the story.

Anyone thinks this actually does has meaning and it was just 2deep4me, I'm eager to hear it, but even if I'm a retard it doesn't change the fact moogy is a retard as well. Moogy never actually explains what makes Subahibi such an intelligent piece of literature, he just alludes to broader themes then never actually discusses them. Even in his review he admits it all just boils down to a message that has nothing to do with the innocuous religious or philosophical references the novel jams down your throat.

>"Just be happy dude" is not a particularly good or interesting theme. It's not poignant in the least.
Themes aren't poignant by themselves.
>How does a "simple" message make something else in a completely different work "ineffectual"? Moogy doesn't bother to expand upon this at all.
Expanding upon it would actually be pretentious. It's astounding to me that you don't see this. He is merely stating, that Subahibi's "poignant simplicity" makes many other ideas seem "ineffectual" by comparison. So what he's saying is that a lot of other VNs aren't poignant to him. What's pretentious about that and what could possibly be the need to start expanding on it?
>The reality is the vast majority of references, whether it is to religion or to otaku subculture never amount to anything narratively in Subahibi.
I don't have knowledge of all the references, but from what I do know and from what I have heard that understand the references I don't, the references are interwoven.
>Moogy never actually explains what makes Subahibi such an intelligent piece of literature, he just alludes to broader themes then never actually discusses them.
Wouldn't it be more pretentious of him if he bit off more than he could chew? He seems to recognize his limited understanding, and leaves it at that. On the other hand, you are basically telling everyone else that you understand SubaHibi better, and saying that it's actually not meaningful at all, without explaining why. In other words, you sound like a hypocrite, holding others up to standards you don't care to uphold yourself.

Reading your post I was thinking about how the "Live Happily" theme relates to Looking-Glass Insects. In the normal ending, Zakuro chooses to not "Live Happily" I suppose, and submits to the bullies rather than rebelling against them, so what does that mean? Did she get what she deserved for not having the correct philosophical perspective? In the good ending where she fights back, she does achieve the Wonderful Everyday, but she still loses against the bullies. They're going to gang-rape her and Kimika and the only reason she gets a happy ending is because Tomosane shows up at the last minute and saves them. What does that say about the theme? What about the other girls that were bullied and raped, and killed themselves with Zakuro?

A title that does well on Steam does exponentially more than one that does well on MG. A title on MG that sells a thousand is considered a great success with the Rance titles having sold a few thousand each. Maybe some of the titles on the MG store have reached 10,000 sales, but that's only after a long time. I'm not sure about the exact numbers titles successful on Steam get, but I'd imagine that a title that does well on Steam gets at least 10k sales easy. I wouldn't be surprised if Evenicle 1 sales have passed 100k sales.

>> No.25311132

>>25310228
Most of mangagamers sales comes from their website, this is due to the fact that they don't put all of their titles on steam like most other VN publishing companies do. Only a small handful of MG's steam titles sell better than the mangagamer store release. Off the top of my head that would be two of the funbag fantasy titles and Evenicle.

What makes you think that?
If we look at their end of year review for 2019 it shows that Kyonyuu Fantasy 2 made it to #7 on their list for games sold on their store that year despite it coming out in late November, yet the series as a whole only made it to #8 on their top selling steam games. There's also the fact that Kyonyuu Fantasy 2 and probably even Gaiden 2 were secured licences before the first game even made it to steam, so it's obvious that they were selling well on their own store.

I'm not disparaging the gameplay focused VN readers but I am saying that objectively the gameplay in Kagura Game titles is extremely low quality and barebones. Flash Games are often more complex with more depth in regards to gameplay than these rpgmaker titles so I'm extremely confident in saying that if they had removed all the adult content from those titles, nobody would have bought them because the gameplay is really really bad. Again I hold no ill will to people who enjoy these kinds of titles because I understand the enjoyment that comes from gameplay focused porn given that I am a big fan of Kyrieru's titles but the titles are objectively bad in terms of the gameplay department and only work because of the combination of porn with the gameplay.

All ages titles are probably going to do better on Steam than MG by default. There are all ages titles that are complete flops on Steam like the Propeller games, but they were complete flops on the MG site too, so the point still stands. As for why otome and yuri titles do better, I'm not completely sure. Yuri ghosts might just have gotten lucky due to being one of the first uncensored titles on the platform while the other yuri titles on Steam by MG are all ages IIRC. I guess otomefags are just more likely to buy from Steam than from the MG site. I think that there are a decent amount of Otome EVNs on Steam, which might explain why.

This isn't directly related to VNs, but since it's tangentially related to VNs I figure you might actually know a thing or tow about this.

But didn't Sekai Project use to publish Rabi-Ribi on Steam?
But when I check the store page
https://store.steampowered.com/app/400910/RabiRibi/
the publisher is listed as CreSpirit. Did their publisher change?
Though at the same time the right side bar on the bottom of the page links to Sekai Project's Facebook, Twitch, Twitter, and Youtube.
So Sekai Project are still getting paid if you purchase Rabi-Ribi? Guess that'd be the case if they helped localize it, no matter whether or not they publish it.
That really sucks though. I'll never ever give Sekai Project a single cent again. Fuck them so, so much.

TK is almost a surefire way to fail since it's poorly structured, dense and lacks exercises. It covers everything in elementary textbooks in just a few pages, which usually takes 3 - 6 months of self study to get through and know by heart. People fail because they take bad advice, rush and burn out, which is literally the only thing that will prevent you from learning Japanese. Never use DJT for anything other than resources. That community is a black hole.

>> No.25436981

>>25434788
This is only true if you're either a retard, unable to make yourself read slowly w/ lookup, or both. There's no need to learn anything by heart when you can look back at your reference while reading REAL japanese rather than your textbook.

>> No.25437195

>>25436981
There's no reason to make things harder for yourself by rushing into things. Doing core2k alongside beginner textbooks of your choice makes your transition into reading infinitely less frustrating.

The DJT NGMI way. Classic.

>> No.25437772

>>25437195
You are making things harder on you.

Tae Kim's idea is that you learn some basic grammar, know where to find stuff if you have trouble, and a bit of vocab. The rest will come from reading. And ONLY that.
A textbook is just a textbook. You will never truly learn the language with that. I know, because I "learned" English like that in school. Not until I actually consumed English media I got actually better. (which was after school)
Grammar is especially like that. Read and eventually you don't think about grammar anymore. You could ask me "hey, why is this like this and that" and I couldn't answer you without looking it up. I just know it'd be like that. Same goes for my native language and whatnot. You don't think about rules, you just "know" how this works. Similar to vocab really. Rules are just helping you to learn basics and are basically going to be broken eventually anyway. They were created solely for people learning the language.

>> No.25438264

>>25437772
Your mistake is thinking I'm saying you should be restricted to a textbook for years. It takes a few months at most of self study, and then you have an infinitely easier time consuming content and don't have to look up literally every single particle and vocab along the way and potentially give up out of frustration. The Tae Kim cram method leads to failure more often than not. I've seen it happen time and time again, and it'll continue to happen. The toxic attitude towards other, more surefire methods of study is part of the problem.

Telling people they're retarded for building a strong base for immersion is beyond idiotic and adds to the cycle of failure. There's no reason to rush. Not rushing isn't the same as being glued to a textbook for 10 years, which is what you seem to believe, which is hilarious.

I went through Genki 1, 2, its workbooks, 2300 kanji and 3400 (13 kanji a day, all associated key vocab for relevant readings) vocab in KKLC in around 6 months starting out and later did 75/25 immersion and Tobira and it was painless. If I went with the meme approach, I'd probably still be torturing myself with reading Unison Shift VNs at snail's pace while pulling my hair out.
