Admittedly Saya does have a pretty deep connection/bond between the two, and is a good story, but it's pretty heavy 'for a beginner'. It may even be enough to scare the guy away. I think Clannad's a pretty good example of the 'visual novel' genre without much stuff added on but well written enough not to be generic. Yume Miru Kusuri is also a good potential starter and has some fairly unique plots.

F/SN and Tsukihime are really not the ones you'd recommend to someone looking for romance...

There's exceptions, though; while Leaf's stuff was still pretty shitty, Elf and CRAFT WORK were both doing pretty good stuff (YU-NO _still_ has great art. It's low-resolution and was probably mostly pixelled, but it's probably the best pixelwork ever).
Itaru's art took a turn for the worse with Kanon and AIR - despite both titles having great backgrounds, the style used for coloring/shading was poorly suited to Itaru's art. Clannad and Rewrite both look pretty decent- Clannad evidently paid the price for this new 'style' because the game took, what, 3 years to create and only had 60 base CGs.

Some characters in LB share that style and those were drawn by Itaru and the rest were done by Na-Ga. Rewrite's characters will be drawn by Itaru so you can expect the same style as Clannad, just improved.

Like what? The game isn't THAT long, especially compared to other titles (like Hello, World and W.L.O which were longer and had significantly shorter development times). The game wasn't originally voiced, so that wasn't an issue either - I can't really see how 3 years went into Clannad, honestly, especially considering that it was common for these guys to make their titles in 4-6 months.
