So. I want to buy a Japanese mobile phone. One from NTT Docomo to be exact. Where? How? I went to http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/charge/purchase/index.html but it seems I have to be fluent in Japanese to purchase one. And can the language in the phone be changed? Halp plz.

You realize you won't even be able to use most of its features on a non-Japanese network, right? I don't even know if they're locked to the network or require subscription.

but you HAVE to be on the plan for x years you cant buy the phone outright. thats what they told me when i bought my phone.
also, you will need to find a place to unlock it to global roaming and theres only so few places that do that according to my old boss.

also, as stated above, most of its defining features will not work outside a japanese network.

Finland? Well, my wife has a softbank phone from when we lived in Japan. I bought an unlocking card from huuto.net and did manage to get it working in Finland, but there were some serious issues:

-ä and ö show up as blank spaces in SMS messages, which makes some words extremely hard to figure out. (ötökkä becomes " t kk " and so on)

-Against all my expectations, the phone actually wasn't just FOMA (the japanese version of 3G), but it also had GSM capabilities. This one was a surprise as Japan does not even have a GSM network. Anyway, this turned out to be lucky because the phone would not accept calls or receive SMS in 3G mode. I had to manually force it to use just GSM to get it to work.

-Only the basic funtions of the phone would work. If I tried to turn on the camera or something, the phone would just give an error saying it needs to update some network stuff. This might be fixable with a more expensive unlocking card but nothing I could do would work. I took the phone to Japan with me and tried it with a friend's softbank SIM card and everything would work fine, but when I inserted the unlocking card and a Finnish SIM card, it just stopped working.

I know some of the issues we had are model-specific so you might have better luck. Still, I would expect the ä & ö to be a problem with any model, the TV receivers will not work in Finland, and I'm pretty sure most models have a similar way to lock certain features in the phones.

Long story short, I wouldn't recommend it. Top of the line nokia models beat the crap out of the Japanese phones anyway.

Anyway, I'm equally bored so:

-3G in Finland and FOMA use the same frequency genius. My N95 works fine in Japan. If some phone works in one but not the other, it's likely due to some ridiculously obscure detail in how its chip works. That kind of information just isn't available to normal people, and to the best of my knowledge, no one has gone and tested each phone model in both networks either.

-Where did you get the idea I was complaining? We bought the Japanese phone for use in Japan, but since I tried to get it to work in Finland (mostly for the "lulz") I have a pretty good idea of the restrictions you'd run into if you try the same, and that's basically what the op wanted to know. Hence my post.

-Finally, no one offered flashing for the model in question at the time. Some expensive unlock cards claimed to be able to retain the multimedia functions in certain scenarios that didn't apply to me (and won't apply to op unless he goes to Japan to buy the camera).

-No japanese phone has support for Finnish. No amount of research is going to help with that.

Japanese phones are lightyears ahead of American phones but that's only because there's a stronger demand for high-tech phones in Japan. They're more like ultra portable computers that can be used as a substitute instead of owning an actual computer.
