Heh, I had a similar problem, but it ended much worse.

I was going to make rice, but all I did was put rice and water in the rice cooker, I failed to turn it on. Forgot about it for at least a month.
I couldn't figure out where all the goddamn flies in my house were coming from, so I did a search of my kitchen.

The rice had become a writhing pit of fly larvae that smelled worse than a 3-day old corpse in Arizona.

I threw the rice cooker away.

Goddammit, and I feel bad because I forget to add enough salt when cooking rice.
Which I think it's the biggest joke on me ever. I enjoy cooking, but I'm just so bad at it. Everything is a mediocre insipid mess.

I would eat Sanae's cooking. Don't know why, she looks to me like a practical kind of girl. Nothing extravagant, yet tasteful. Homecooking at its best.

Added rice.

Don't worry about it. After much trial and error, everyone can learn to cook.

Moved on to sushi since the intermezzo with the rice back in 2003. After the family got their hands on some increasingly rare eel just this Spring, went and cooked up a batch of maki with smoked eel and lumpsucker roe. Served at a family dinner with some plain California rolls and sake (US Gekkeikan, but still).
I've never been happier in a kitchen.

I like to cook and I'm ok to be honest, I mean really - Asides from what you've learnt as you grow up (luckily my dad always involved me) its just a matter of common sense or if you're doing something from a recipe book, sticking to the instructions.

I've met people who can't even cook pasta with a simple, ready made pesto sauce before. I'm not even joking.

Best thing about learning to cook as well is that your standards rise, its like /jp/'s elitism as far as anything weeaboo related goes. Your pallette grows so that you begin to distinguish between varying degrees of freshness in vegetables, stuff like that.

There's always something special about the first time.
I still remember my first steak, 'twas on a birthday, my cousin's. In my case, what made it special probably was the feeling of accomplishment and being useful to others.
In your case, I believe it might have been the achievement from overcoming an invisible 'wall' and the smell of your own, burnt, flesh. Probably.

I never really tried much. My mom is a really good cook and my grandma was god tier (really bad rheumatoid arthritis, she doesn't cook much anymore), so I never really had to cook myself.
