reading comprehension is much different though. i imagine the JLPT either gives you long sections of text, and you have to summarize it in some way, or you have to know the readings of less common kanji. if it's the former, as an anecdotal example, when i started studying japanese, i was pretty fucking bad at reading even though my listening was enough to understand what i was reading, and had to literally focus on pronouncing it all out in my head to actually get an understanding as to what was happening. maybe i just have autism, who knows.

A lot of readings are obvious, at least on-yomi. KKLC already provides said vocab in the order you learn the kanji. There's 7200 vocab using the 2300 kanji it covers in order. You learn basically all relevant readings and a bunch of vocab of varying usefulness as well.

the best time to learn a reading is right when you learn the kanji, and the best way to learn a reading is to learn a word which uses it
of course, the words which happen to use a reading youre learning might contain other kanji you don't know; this is unavoidable but to minimize learning vocab for which you don't know the kanji you should just limit to one or two words max per reading
also make sure you learn the pitch accent of each word if you ever plan on speaking

the point is skipping on readings while learning kanji is like skipping on pitch accent or kanji while learning vocab - it feels like you're spending 2x the effort on everything (and you kind of are)

What's great is that the vocab is only combinations of previously learned kanji so the readings and meanings are usually obvious and further reinforce knowledge of the kanji. the idea is by the time you finish rtk you can already read 7k-8k words which use each kanji
also if you're willing to go the extra mile for learning how to guess readings of new words, check out how frequently the readings of a kanji are used on jisho or something
it's quite common for a lot of readings of a kanji to come exclusively from a select few exception words, so by realizing this not only can you learn said exceptions but you can also confidently use the remaining one or two "main" reading(s) while guessing a new word which uses that kanji (and obviously you're in luck if theres only one main reading, which actually applies to hundreds of kanji, because you are guaranteed that's how the kanji is read in the new word)

The basic words that come back pretty much all the time amount to no more than a few hundred, which you would learn (and make them stick intuitively) with easy through reading compelling content. Should I start watching shows I enjoy(ed) raw even though I'm a complete beginner? I was able to understand like 80% of steins;gate(mostly due to having already seen it once years ago; I was only completely understanding 20-40% of the dialogue to the point of basically being able to explain exactly what they siad, instead of only having a general idea due ). I also noticed baisc kanji and vocab I learnt just days before became quickly apparent to me when watchign the show and I was "already" able to read some things. I feel like it might be a good idea, but hearing the opinion of someone who tried something similar would be very beneficial.
