Since this is a rare occasion, I will take this opportunity to say that in the future, if a thread 404's, the server will likely take a brief break. The longevity of these threads and the server's uptime is a personal concern of mine lately, and I'd rather they not be turned psuedo-generals with no discussion that just get bumped from page 10 when they're up. It's fine to let them 404 if there's nothing to discuss.

Weekly hosting is also something that's been on my mind a bit. While it was convenient at the time because there was a lot of simple stuff to add and quick fixes to test, I didn't intend for it to be the norm. Now that the stuff that's left to work on is a bit more involved, I've considered pushing back how frequently these are hosted since the content updates are a bit on the slower side (basically everything at this point needs to be written from the ground up). Admittedly hosting without new content is always something I'm a bit neurotic about and since the updates are a bit on the slower side these days, it's something I've been thinking about a fair bit.

In short - I think hosting this too frequently without a lot of big updates would devalue it, and the little discussion the threads have gotten lately reinforces my thoughts on this somewhat. None of this is set in stone of course, just some personal concerns of mine to gauge what you guys think. I know pushing back the frequency of these wouldn't be entirely well-received, but it's a thought.

You have mentioned your concerns with the thread turning into a general many times before. I've personally tried to avoid bumping unless I've had anything relevant to add to a discussion. Seeing the thread before the break being bumped for over a month with little to no discussion was disconcerting.

I think one of the main issues is that very few of us are not involved in the development of the server, and thus can't join the discourse.
We can give you ideas, like in the thread before the break were you asked for ideas for PvE gamemodes. If we were to discuss broader topics like that, then I'm sure that more people would engage in the discussion.

I think your worries about hosting without any new content are mostly unfounded, though. It seems to me at least that people enjoy whatever we're doing that session, even if it's the same old stuff we've been doing for a while. The PvP maps we play have near endless replayability, and easymodo keeps being nice even if we're still hanging out in areas we've visited many times before, and exploring the new maps being worked on makes it even better. And it's always fun just talking to everyone or watching movies. There are small changes you could do to keep things interesting though, like changing the location for gangwars and having a new rotation of gamemodes to play.

But if you think that hosting the server less frequently will improve things, then I'm all for trying it. However, there's always the risk that people's interest will begin to wane if it's hosted too infrequently. It would probably be better if you were to host the server the first three weeks of the month, and then took a break in the last.

What do you guys do on this server? I've had a passing interest and keep meaning to join in, but I don't want to if I can't just wander around on my own and observe or mess around killing NPCs. I don't PVP in non PVP oriented games(e.g. shooter or fighting games) and I don't want to be forced to be part of some circlejerk to keep random people from murdering me.

These are the details of the suggestion I posted to admin anon during the run regarding the mechanics of the territories should they be implemented in Gensokyo.

Primary Issue: The map is huge, with all the important areas worthy of being territories spread out over a wide area. This is NOT to say mapanon should shrink the world; the huge map lends itself well to exploration and wandering around and I think it should keep this aspect. The gameplay design for gang wars should just work around it.

As mentioned, the idea is to simulate a strategy game map using the gang territories as nodes. This is the implementation for many turn-based strategy games from the board game, Risk, to stuff like Hearts of Iron, etc. Note pic for an visual example, from EratohoK.

The suggested implementation for this is to make a set of teleporters that connect "adjacent" terrories. For example, (and don't mind if it's geographically wrong), Hakurei Shrine is connected to Kourindou, which is connected to Marisa's house, which then connects to Youkai Mountain:

Hakurei Shrine -> Kourindou -> Marisa's House -> Youkai Mountain

Let's assume Hakurei Shrine is owned by Hakurei and Youkai Mountain is owned by SDM. Hakurei Shrine will only have a teleporter to Kourindou, while Youkai Mountain will only have a teleporter to Marisa's house. Meanwhile, Kourindou will have a teleporter to both Marisa's house and Hakurei Shrine, and so on.

The gang members can then use these teleporters to capture the adjacent territories, where they will then battle it out for Kourindou and Marisa's house before moving on to the respective gang's inner territories.

The teleporters in each territory should only be usable for the gang that already owns that territory. i.e. Hakurei Shrine is owned by HKR, Hakurei Members can use the teleporters to warp to Kourindou. Then, assuming Kourindou is already owned by SDM, the HKR members who now find themselves in Kourindou *cannot* use the teleporters to jump back to Hakurei Shrine. They must either capture the territory, huff it back on foot, or die.

I envision a web of teleporters connecting the important spots of Gensokyo, with some locations containing several teleporters to multiple adjacent territories - like the Human Village, which should get teleporters to Myouren Temple, the Great Mausoleum, etc. The battles will be fierce for these strategic locations, and the $$ rewards for keeping them should be just as large. Perhaps some locations could even house special weapon/vehicle spawns (e.g. Chireiden will have a guaranteed spawn of several of Okuu's control rod weapon, aka the magnum). This will make taking and holding territories more interesting and meaningful both in a strategic and tactical perspective.

Of course, people could ignore the teleporters for deep raids in enemy territory in just their cars. This should be allowed. That would make it more interesting! After all, the time cost of them doing this and taking the enemy by surprise vs quickly jumping into the fray via teleporters is, I think, an interesting decision to make.

I understand this system might need a bit of tweaking for practical use, but thankfully, it's a system that's directly testable in even the current layout of gang wars. In particular, the LS and SF gang wars, where territories are slightly spaced apart, admin anon could, if he would like, make a test implementation of this teleporter web. For instance the Cluckin Bell territory would connect to the power station and the large train station territories, and so on.

Note that the AKs are safely stashed inside the shrine, so invaders can't access them easily, giving a defensive advantage for the owners.

I'm also deliberating where it would be important to place the warp spawns (where people are placed when they enter/exit a teleporter) somewhere with cover. But on the other hand, if the defending team is really set on spawncamping, no amount of cover would really stop them from doing so.

For instance, in the sample layout, I placed the farm warp at the foot of the shrine. This means the defenders can shoot at warping attackers from the top of the shrine. I could place the warp a bit down the road, behind the wall of trees - but if the defenders are really set on spawncamping, they would just line up along the road instead and shoot at anyone warping in. Thoughts?

The entire point of the teleporter web is the dull and repetitive drive that gangs need to make to traverse the far-apart territories.

This was made apparent as a problem the last time we played gang wars in SF where people got tired of it easily. That and the lack of weapon spawns. These two issues were kept in mind in the suggestion above.

With the teleporter web, clashes ought to happen much more frequently, and with the territories themselves holding weapon stashes, it will no longer be necessary to drive around LS to "forage" for weapons, so long as you can defend your own territory (which is sort of the point).

An additional idea that comes to mind is the concept of the "gang base" discussed some time back. It would have teleporters to and from spawn, but which are only usable by gang members themselves. The base could house basic supplies, like a pistol, a tec-9, and a health pickup, and *may or may not* be a capturable territory by itself. It would then have its own teleporter to an adjacent territory.

e.g.
SDM's gang base would likely be the SDM. It would have the basic pickups, and a teleporter that goes to and from the LV airport spawn usable only by SDM members. Plus, it has a teleport to, say, Garden of the Sun, an adjacent territory. At the moment I'm leaning on these being normal, capturable territories, to keep it simple, plus it would be a shame if we can't actually besiege the SDM or the Moon or Hakurei Shrine just because they're the designated gang bases.

Already done! Some other good stuff I've been polishing up in BT this week I've done so far:
-Explosions in Bomb Tag are now purely cosmetic and only damage the bomb carrier
-Implemented a spectator feature so you don't have to stare at your corpse for the remainder of a match
Only real concern is hit-detection. Currently the bomb will swap players if the server "sees" you land the hit, but I may switch it all over to the client if it's too bad for players with a high ping. Allowing the bomber to freeze everyone for two seconds or so as an ability is another alternative to score clean hits, and also making it a bit easier for the bomber to pass the bomb.

In-game right now there's probably 20 or so, as of now a little over a dozen are selectable. It's been brought up a few times that all of them should be added to spawn, although I do have some concerns that spawn is starting to get a bit bloated by adding that many new models to it, and there's also the issue of character ID's - there's only so many SA peds to replace.

Sorry if i'm complete wrong here. but I recall that in order to get custom handling working the server you need to edit the base handling.cfg and put the values there, not load them externally using modloader, since that seemed to create timeouts last time. If the anon that access to that file and give a DL for current one, i can put the values in there and sent them back at you.

Reason I say this is because the rally cars to were suppose to handle like rally cars (and to permanently fix mystia's food truck and some right hand drive cars), but they still drive like molasses or are fussy to get into last we played.

All the cars that was in the first pack I made (Changes to their speed and handling, sort had to redo them since the way I implemented them the first time gave different results.Tried to patch them up to how they were originally from memory). The Mitsubishi Flatbed truck so that is doesn't rollover quite as easily, the drift skyline no longer scraping its underside constantly and being able to use it's 4 doors, tighten up the suspension on the Lancia a bit so that less wonky, minor changes to the ride height on the Marisa Skyline, Sultan Subaru and the Mercedes with the bodykit. Moved the Mercedes with the bodykit (previously call emperor ingame) to --> bravura, and the drift skyline (previously bravura) to --> oceanic. The emperor now is a different new car ingame.

Think that's that about it.

Two-fold good news this week; my schedule is free again so I can get back to slacking off on server work full-time again. Improved car system has been requested a lot so setting up the foundations for that might be the first order of business. With Gensokyo starting to shape up and with more time on my hands again, I've been relatively inspired to get some more work done. The palanquin now serves as a psuedo-ferry to various landmarks (currently Myouren Temple, SDM, and the Moriya Shrine). Originally I was going to make it a bit like the zeppelin system from WoW where it just operates on a pre-set schedule to different points, but instead decided to let the player choose where they want to go since the map is so large. It can be a speedy/lazy way to get around.

That also winded up leading into something else since it seemed like a good opportunity - I've cooked up a little demo of interactive NPCs, they're a bit more refined now. Ideally they'd be scattered around and offer varying levels of interactivity and dialogue to help bring the world alive. What do you think?

Bit more of an expansion on the palanquin, Murasa was added to it and, just like a real NPC, you can access the palanquin's controls by walking up to her. Surprisingly proved more of a headache than I anticipated - there's some odd graphical issues and other technical jank in adding regular SA peds to something like this. Fortunately the 2D sprite idea I had for NPCs works out beautifully when it comes to regular ped limitations at least, I'm not sure if it's too "gimmicky" but I think it turned out okay - defines interactable NPCs a bit more.

With regards to the movie night planned for the next run, I am planning to show episode 5 of Touhou Famires and I wanted to ask if you would prefer to rewatch 1-4, for those who missed it, and the new anons, or just episode 5 by itself.

For the former, the total expected runtime would be 1:34:29, +10 or so minutes of waiting and other delays.
