I love how the default answer is No when you're asked to continue in Touhou. It's like they assume you have no reason to play anymore.

Well duh. It's 1CC or bust.

PRACTICE MODE.

I never see that screen anymore. The first time I die I Esc-up arrow-enter-up arrow-enter. Deaths have no place in a scoring run.

After I read something about old-school arcade gaming, I think I'll never again be able to continue.
I used to think it was okay, in order to unlock the stages for practice, but that changed my mind.

I recommend reading this anyone who plays arcade (or arcade style) games. I also stopped using continues after reading this.

He's right though. He's focusing on Japan because that's where the good arcade games are made and where arcades are still popular.

Even though author is a gigantic douchebag, this article is damn good. Especially the thing about continuing.

But he IS right. And the games ARE more hardcore or whatever. Most of the games not made in Japan are for casualfags.

I love how the default answer is No when you're asked if you really want to give up and retry in Touhou. It's like they want you to live with your now fucked-up run.

Read harder.
He mentions that not using continues only makes sense in an arcade setting because it's uneconomical. When you're not paying for it there isn't really all that much of a reason not to use continues besides the little pride you may have left.

In his Mushihime-sama review:
>I made it towards the end of the second stage in Maniac mode on one credit that morning, and popped in a few more credits to see stage 3 before I had to get ready to go.

>> No.2512248

no just not everybody wants to beat a game on more than one credit

>> No.2512255

>>2512231
The Mushihime Futari review was written by a different person.
And no, he does not say that at all.

>> No.2512260

>>2512231
>People who've been exposed to arcade gaming perhaps only through home ports and emulation, and who find these games interesting and charming, but who can't quite see the reason they should be limiting themselves to one credit at a time. I mean really now, they usually ask, what's so wrong about using a few extra credits from time to time?
>These people are missing the point of arcade gaming... blah blah blah
>To understand the essence of arcade gaming you must never continue.

Yeah I guess it's mostly pride or something like that.

>> No.2512262

I don't use continues just because I don't want to see BAD END.

>> No.2512282

>>2512231

ou start playing and the game gets harder and harder, and soon enough you hit a wall. And the whole point of it is getting strong enough to break through that wall, and reach the next wall, and become even stronger to break through that wall, etc. etc. If every time you come to a wall you take out a little folding ladder and just use that to climb over, what's the point of the exercise?

Arcade games are all about the adrenaline rush which kicks in within a couple of minutes of starting one, and doesn't let up until you are either dead or managed to beat the game.

It's all about finally reaching the second boss with full health and doing your best to take that sucker down, filled with expectation to see what the next stage looks like, what it sounds like, what it plays like...

And so you failed this time -- you are not good enough yet to kill the second boss -- what's the point of BUYING your way past him?

For fuck's sake dude, you won't even be able to handle the next stage anyway! What satisfaction can you possibly get by going through it while getting killed every five seconds, and bombing, bombing, bombing... ?

>> No.2512284

>>2512282
Don't you see that all the tension the designers have carefully worked to build into the encounter with that boss is completely ruined if you know that, even if he kills you, you'll get past him anyway? And what reason do you have to get past him like a man, if you've already seen what comes next?

Well, you might have already seen what comes next by watching some other guy play the game, but you still haven't felt what it's like to play what comes next.

And if you continue, you never will! Indeed, you never will exactly because you are used to continuing!

You will never know what it feels like to play through -- not over -- a tough challenge, and move on to an even tougher one, getting better acquainted with the controls and the system, delving into the game at a deeper level of proficiency. Doing stuff on screen that random passerbys find humanly impossible. Conquering the game. Not letting it conquer you.

This is what arcade gaming is all about.
YEAH ONLY ECONOMICAL REASONS HERE

Seriously.

And >>2512231 is incorrect.

>> No.2512304

>>2512284
Yeah, but you can continue and can do all that too.

>> No.2512336

Continues are a means to an end. A player is going to be able to 1CC a game much faster and more efficiently if he continues when he runs out of lives on the second-last stage each time and is able to practice and 2 or 3CC the last stage and boss, rather than only practicing up to that stage each time before restarting. Losing all your lives by Stage 5 does not mean that Stage 6 is going to be insurmountable after that.

The articles assumes "beating the game" is the goal. It isn't; "1CCing the game" is, and Continues while you work on that goal will help achieve it.

>> No.2512342

>>2512336
Or you can just do practice mode.

>> No.2512345

OP here

>>2512130
I can see the guy's point about how not wanting to spend more credits will naturally make you try and get the most out of each credit. But the guy still comes off as pretentious, and I generally can't take people like him seriously.

>>2512030
Well EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUSE ME princess! It was my first time getting to stage 6 on Hard (not Lunatic).

>> No.2512353

>>2512342

I know that for myself at least, I am much more prone to making mistakes due to nerves on the real final boss, even when I can sail through practices.

>> No.2512360

That's requires it being open in practice mode.

>> No.2512371

>>2512353
I'm usually the opposite. I take too many stupid risks in practice.

>> No.2512372

>>2512336
For me, beating the game as in mastering it IS the goal. As I try to be as good as possible in the game, the 1CC comes naturally.
I have also noticed that I play much more seriously when I don't continue. It's about getting a bit further every time.

>> No.2512380

So, on the subject, how do I get my framerate to a reasonable level?

>> No.2512438

>>2512336
you very rarely lose every life you have on the final stage you can reach, you can stand to play the earlier stages better and conserve lives/bombs for difficult things. In Touhou this definitely rings true when it's so forgiving with bombs that you can blow through half a level on two lives without even attempting to dodge a bullet.

>> No.2512486

So? It's still a more effective strategy to continue and practice the later stage(s) so that when you do manage to sort out the previous stages (and certainly in Touhou games at least, most of the lives ARE usually lost at one specific boss) you aren't going into the final boss for an ineveitable drubbing as you have no idea or practice on what to expect.

I can't recall it clearly, but i had only problems in windowed mode or vice-versa. I've decided to reinstall everything (os included) with the newest drivers, problems solved

... i've also tried Touhou on Linux with Wine, well it worked , not bad at all. I had just to disable the desktop effects, they were interfering with flickering

No problem, broski. That patch helped me out a ton, usually when having a jumpy or lower framerate. Being able to resize the windows is nice too.
