I thought Zearth just ran on children's souls? I was thinking "battery" pilots permanently strapped to their cockpits (think ork deff dreds) , shown images of children and told they will be theirs if they destroy a certain amount of enemy mecha. Their lust powers the machine. When a pilot fulfills the criteria set for him, he is promptly shot and replaced by another willing pedophile.

The story could focus on a rogue pilot that took over an entire mech, got rid of its crew and escaped before he could be shot. Along his journey, he redeems himself and finds true love, but his mecha, that now acts as life support, stops functioning (since he no longer lusts for little girls) and he dies.

Sitting in a room (one for each would-be pedophile, since the successful pilots getting shot is obviously a grand secret. ) He can't get out of the room, since he's physically bound to it, but he could have some limited movement within (unlike orks, humans aren't content with just being big and stompy. )

For all other purposes, he more or less is the mech, which is how it could be hijacked in the first place (There can be secondary pilots, but they can't do much if he isn't there to power and dictate everything. ) He might not even tell he's a man locked down there right away, it's not like sentient robots are a novel concept.
