I think I had to write a formal letter and a short essay for one, for the speaking part they put us into small groups and took us into a room with a picture of some cruise ship and we had to talk about it for 3 minutes or so.

i can write kanji well and studied in japan and had to write essays and shit by hand but i still wouldnt recommend learning it unless you already know japanese cause you'll never need to use it outside of very specific situations where you can just copy from your phone anyway. the only time it would be really necessary is if you insisted on applying for jobs that are only advertised for japanese people because sometimes they make you do a written test in the interview process but probably most people here would only apply for japanese jobs advertised to foreigners looking for visas anyway.

then just tried reading eroge, worked well to retain stuff i'd already acquired, but not so much for new words, and had some problems remembering some readings.

You could probably set a english keyboard to input nip but I rather have a dedicated thing.
