2480087 No.2480087 [Reply] [Original]

So I finished the first episode of Umineko. Was anyone else disappointed with it?

I thought the murders were just a work of one person, but in the end they blamed everything on a witch. At least the virus in Higurashi was kind of believable, but the witch thing in Umineko is just stupid. I hope the last episode will reveal that humans did it and there are no witches.

>> No.2480181

Wrong, wrong, WRONG. The story has gone through pains to make sure BOTH the fantasy and the mystery aspects have validity and their own appeal. It does this by showing magic at work, but leaving a door open to allow for a non-magical explination. The murders ARE being comitted with magic, but they can can be turned into mundane murders with a human culprit if Beatrice is defeated; this was shown CLEARLY in ep.3 when Beato denied the nagic theory herself and Eva became the killer. In all other episodes, where the magic explination remains undefeated, we see the murders being comitted with magic, and the humans remain innocent -- which is the main attraction of the magic theory, the fact that everyone is innocent.

basically, in the world of Umineko, magic and witches exist, but can be denied. It's a little strange how come some of you can't question the underlying reason of having magic shoved in our faces for 90% of the story.

Beatrice's side of the story becomes one of two truths because it wasn't disproven. That truth manifests itself on Rokkenjima for all episodes after the first. What she said was never made clear, since Battler was told to cover his ears., so it could've been a variety of things she said, possibly a matter relating to the entire Ushiromiya bloodline.

>> No.2480253

My thoughts on the subject.

Beatrice's game board isn't the real world. The only real world was episode one. The rest take place in the fake world of Beatrice's that's a copy of the real one. Battler can't prove that her world is fake so she's able to do anything she wants in it. She can appear it and kill people with magic and whatnot. But if Battler can provide proof that everything was done by humans without magic then Beatrice can no longer make the claim that it was impossible for humans so witch must have done it. Beatrice's fake world will shatter and meta Battler will cease to exist.

Theory broken. But you're also barking up the wrong tree; we see multiple instances of witches and magical things occuring from other people's perspective outside the gameboard, and therefore outside the perspective and knowledge of Beatrice and Battler. Were Shannon, Kanon, Agne and Maria all having incredibly realistic delusions of imaginary friends? What kind of drug do you ahve to take that will let me imagine such solid illusions like the Stakes, or a loli with long blue hair walking, or a blonde girl with a Victorian dress on? You just barking up the wrong tree. Meta Battler sees everything that happens on the game board. The three areas of Umineko.

1. The real world. Only present in the first episode
2. The game board.
3. The place outside the board (where Meta Battler and Beatrice reside)

Anyone outside the board game sees everything that happens in the game board. But when someone outside goes to be in private then only the people with them know what's going on. It's not hard to figure out.

Think of Beatrice's world has an online cheese game that's in a private room. Only people who's invited are able to watch the game. The world is fake because it's not the real world. In this example it's a virtual world. Bern complains about boredom. What's odd about her wanting to watch the game between Beatrice and Battler?

Timeline

Episode 1: Everyone mysterious dies and goes missing. Beatrice claims it was done by magic and witches and challenges Battler to to prove otherwise.

Episode 2+ Beatrice creates the game board where magic exists. Since magic exists, even normal people like Kanon and Shannon can have magical powers. Battler needs to explain how everything can happen without magic for him to beat the game board. Beatrice claimed that the Rokkenjima incident was only possible with witches and magic and Battler proves otherwise then Battler's "truth" overrides Beatrice's "truth" and her fake world where magic exists will cease to exist.

as far as we know, the same person wrote both maria's grimor and those messages in the bottles. it was stated in the translated part of episode 4 that when maria was doing an assignment for class she was chastised for using more advanced writing skills than she should have been able to have at that age. coupling this with mammon saying that the furniture can not do anything that the master is not willing/capable to do themselves leads me to believe something along the lines of magic beings being something like an extension of their master in the sense that when told to do something, they take over the body to do it. In this way it can be surmised that Beato was either, able to take control of maria to write her grimor, or another person is being controlled/pretending to be Beato/Beatrice.

it is my belief that no "magic" is actually involved in this in the classical sense of the word as in "bringing about miracles." I believe that it is more along the lines of people who have become so adept at deception as to make both themselves and others believe that what they do is magic

I am also of the mind that what battler is experiencing right now is not really happening. it could also be said that battler and possibly the other 4 never died in the first game as we neither saw them dieing nor did the part at the end say the definitively found their corpses. they only found what appeared to be 5 people's worth of parts.

Thie frist part of ep4 makes it look like "magic" is just self-delusion. However, this goes to hell by the end of ep4;

Agne says she will show "true magic" in the final showdown with whats-her-face (Kyrie's younger sister) and her gang of armed thugs. She summons the Stakes, and they *appear* to slaughter the gunmen, while Eva-Beatrice was all shocked saying it was impossible to materialize magic before so much anti-magic toxin. Even though this might seem like a huge victory for magic (as it occurs outside the gameboard in the real world from Agne's perspective) the door is left open to allow for a non-magical explination; the gunmen and younger-sister can't see what it is that is killing them, and Amakusa, who is a highly experienced mercenary, brought a large rifle with him and Ange, and it's not strange at all if he was out secretely watching over her. Since Agne and the gunmen were standing on a cliff or a rise giving them a view of a large part of the island, Amakusa could ahve easily been hiding far enough away to snipe them without his gunshots being heard. However, even if that's the case, it would be an incredible coincidence for Agne to see the Stakes running up to a gunman and slashing them with a locus blade while yelling things like "FALL TO HELLLLL!!!" at the exact same moment Amakusa snipes them one after the other. If Agne saw some sort of signal to indicate that Amakusa was there, and the "true magic" thing was just a ruse, why does she need to summon the Stakes? Who is she fooling except herslef? Why does she see Eva-Beatrice whispering hate into younger-sister's ear? That could have been just what she imagined the kind of hate was running through her head, but how would she know what Eva-Beatrice looked like? So it's like everything else up until now -- it looks like magic, but there is an "escape clause" built into it.

Along with that, Beato seems to get depressed when Battler is angry at her, probably because Battler is the closest she's had to a real friend in a while (or ever). Do they even have a name for when a captor starts to care for their captive? Reverse Stockholm syndrome?

Anyway, I just want to see a nice end for both Battler and Beato ;_;

I'm one. Why? Because the magical expliantion, besides being what we're fed throughout 90% of the story, is simply much better than the mundane explination. We're anons, we debate power levels. ANd with magical explination, Battler's parents and siblings are heroes, not greedy murderers. Come back after reading the rest of ep.4 and tell me the magic doesn't make you go ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER. It's mentioned in some episode that the only goal of Beato and Battler's game is for Battler to prove the murders were committed by humans and for Beato to prove they were committed by witches (thus forcing Battler to give up and believe in witches).

That's the issue of Umineko. If we believe in magic and the events we see in the game, family members suddently become loving towards each other, awesome kung-fu masters, ready to protect the ones they love.
But if we deny all of it, we only get the greedy vultures of the first game, financial problems being their only concern and hatred between all of them, adding up to the fact some of them, if not most of them, are capable of murder.
So, defeating Beato and solving the mystery will only make all that shit surface.
I am waiting for an episode where we see no magic, just conspiration between all the family members, where Battler desperately searches for other explanation than the rational one he's presented with, showing his family as monsters.
