DJT is a thread about learning Japanese by watching raw anime and reading untranslated VNs, LNs & manga.

Moogy method.
- Get a basic understanding of Japanese however you want. Don't spend a long time on it.
- Read VNs for hours on end every single day for six months. No matter how hard it is. Don't use machine translation or parsers.
- You now know Japanese.

didn't even get 2nd post, guess that proves jp suck

on a serious note i don't even think this is worth it to be honest

if your intention is to increase listening, and you can't even parse the words being said to look up words on your own, you're not ready to learn that word through audio yet.

the main point of listening a ton is not to be able to learn new words, its the constant repetition of common words and grammar that you need drilled into your brain to the point where you don't even have to think what was said even in a mumbled sentence

as you approach that level, the few words you don't know will very clearly start popping out at you and you'll start to be able to hear them crystal clear, instead of them sort of slurring in your mind because you're trying to make sense of the surrounding sounds that are easy

even toggling japanese subs just slows this process down and it's only used for comprehension addicts who got used to reading japanese and don't want to start back at square one for listening because they neglected it

matt says to spend 50% of your watching time with subs on

>> No.24754370

>>24754310
The main problem is people get tricked into thinking the subtitles are helping their listening because they get a huge boost in comprehension when they use them. Most of the people arguing for subtitles are just thinking "I can understand way more with subs on, so that must mean I'm improving a ton too", meanwhile they still can't understand anything when they toggle them off.

>> No.24754382

>>24754364
You're leaving out some context actually. Matt says subtitles are a good early way to get reading practice when you're just starting out, because the context and the emotion of the audio that goes along with it. He has never once said subtitles help with listening. If you are playing catch-up with your listening, like most people in this thread are, he says to not use subtitles.

>> No.24754395

i know for a fact that subtitles help because that's how i improved my english listening skills. there's a point that you have to let them go to improve even more but you can already understand almost anything when that time comes

Actual Moogy method.
- Edit fansubs.
- Take at least 1 year of Japanese classes.
- Read VNs for at least 5 hours every single day for 2 years. Don't use machine translation or parsers or mouseover dictionaries.
- You can now pass N1 but still make basic mistakes when trying to translate.

diff anon, but its not optimal at all if it took you a year and a half to reach that level. it probably should've taken you 6 months (or faster) in the same time if you just did easier listening material and progressed from there n+1ing. its just bad to shill as its less optimal than doing what most did themselves to improve their reading when anons first learned how to read. for example we probably would both agree to a pleb to go read yotsubato after learning vocab and grammar, and not something extremely difficult. the same exact thing for listening

I mean nothing is inherently good or bad (unless you're a low iq religious fanatic).

When people generally say things are good or bad they are using them in a context.

Watching without subtitles is better than watching with subtitles if your goal is to watch without subtitles.

The only reason this is controversial to say is because it's a reality check to people who are too scared to not understand something. This is literally the same argument people use for using romaji.

i like that netflix exists cuz it means more jp subs being available
i would never use it though cuz torrenting anime is too easy and comfortable and overall preferable to streaming imo
the only thing i would ever use it for is watching japanese dubs of western media but using netflix with a jp vpn is annoying and the jp subs of that type of content are often written by a seperate translation team and don't correspond to what's actually being said making them kind of pointless

A Japanese here. There is no such thing . Even a slice of life anime use Japanese that is very dramatized. For example, -じゃないか or -だぞ and other weird-in-real-life dramatized Japanese are used in those anime’s and they’re far from the Japanese that we speak in real life. It’s a terrible idea to use anime to learn Japanese.

Hi, I was wondering is there any anime out there to watch that doesn’t dramatize the Japanese language? I know in shonen the characters sound really exaggerated in their speech. I would like to watch something that is more realistic if that makes sense.

Edit: My phone has been blowing up so much lmao. Thank you to everyone who is offering suggestions. I do want to clarify two misunderstandings that I keep seeing though. One is that I don’t hate anime VA. I watch many types of anime and like it. I just wanted to know if there was something more natural. Two, I can tell there are two defining perspectives to this question and I didn’t realize that my question would spark a lot of discussion but also conflict. I’m sorry to those that I upset, it wasn’t my intention to get people riled up. This is my first post on this sub, so maybe next time I should articulate myself better. I’m sorry again. ‍️

There's a good amount of everyday slang and expression that people use in real life. The show for the most part is grounded in reality so the conversations seemed very natural. There are a lot of awkward situations in the show, where the characters are forced to talk about sensitive topics, so you see many ways in which Japanese people kind of convey their feelings, many times in a very roundabout and awkward ways. I think it's a good recommendation. The feels hit hard though.

So worse. S;G has a very appropriate artstyle which fulfills its purpose far better than the anime's. By nature of not being super high-budget, the anime is visually boring, too clean and at times off-model.

As someone who learned English using trashy fantasy novels, videos games and online message boards, I don't really get this whole idea of avoiding content just because it doesn't feature "realistic" language. I mean, what would you even have left? People in real life don't speak like they're in an anime, but they also don't speak like they're in a video game, TV drama, movie, novel, news broadcast or a newspaper article. That really doesn't leave many options for people who don't actually live in Japan, especially if the desire to consume all of this "bad" content is the reason they started learning the language in the first place.

Whatever benefits there are to exclusively exposing yourself to "real" Japanese aren't worth the cost of forcing yourself to consume and learn from media you have no real interest in.

I’m a nisei hafu and I would never, ever want to live in Japan.

Let’s just start with the most obvious reason:

I’m a single woman in her late 20’s and life is comparatively shitty for women in Japan, especially one as old as I am.

Japanese people are NOT direct; conversations consist of meaningless platitudes, incredibly insincere flattery, and awkward smiles.

I hate blind acceptance of authority.

I’m addicted to Xanax and I generally like drugs.

I’m a sex worker and this is obviously related to reason #1.

you will never be accepted as a foreigner, even myself - a hafu that can pass as “just Asian” in the US.

I can’t afford to buy gifts for everyone.

Genuine displays of love and affection (especially from your family)??? Lol no.

I’m already lonely af, but that pales in comparison to the absolute depth of solitude that lonely people in Japan experience.

I have a general extreme dislike for contemporary Japanese pop culture.

I’m incredibly westernized so I’d probably only be able to make friends with other expats and overall, they seem like the most insufferable people on earth.

sure but if you have a vague understanding of the word through an english translation (which really isn't that vague) it's extremely easy to fine tune for subconscious acquiring. whenever i see a word i recently mined in my viewing i can always process it within the context of the sentence as it's being spoken and then by the third or fourth time i no longer have think about the definition. it's just understood axiomatically. what more do you want? surely you don't wish to pretend japanese grammar is some mystery either. a quick perusal of a form you saw a few times in the the hjgp will have you understanding it for life.

although to be fair when i say decent i'm talking just about comprehension not speaking or writing, which would heavily confound the situation.

I don't know what the 5 year result of 2 hours a day was supposed to be when Matt mentioned those figs but I think I stand by the point of doing atleast 2 hours a day ideally all in a chunk and definitely not just doing 1 hour a day. Simply cus when you're reaching 2 hours there seems to be a momentum and your immersion deepens. Immersion hardly feels like immersion when you do 1 hour and then go away. And 1 hour is only good for 2 anime eps when you push Anki in there.

i'm 27, but i just think it's dumb to dismiss everything because it's new, has nothing to do with vtube at all it's just a general statement. it's like still watching 48 stuff when 46 has taken over, it's just kind of pathetic in a way to see people that stubborn.
