realistically if you only want to watch like 2/3 jidaigeki movies and youre not that interested it would be tough to get to that point just watching other shit because jidaigeki uses very genre specific language but i think but as matt says you can just see how you feel in 1000 hours lol

rewatching flcl for the first time in like 10 years. i had forgotten pretty much everything about it and rewatching it i'm blown away by how good it is.

the first time i watched it i don't think i was able to appreciate how special it was since i had so little experience with the medium, but watching it now i can really see how much it stands out from everything else.

you can really feel that the people making it were having fun and that feeling inevitably rubs off on you too as the viewer when you watch it. the creativity and care put into the animation (which is incredible for a show made in the very early days of the digital era) is really not something you get to see in many other shows.

Krashen also suggests that acquisition is better than actively learning? By your logic we should all drop our books and resources and just immerse ourselves with no goal?

Also if you're just going to practise input, that goes against what Krashen himself says about producing language yourself (output). How are you going to get your monitor to not do as much work when you haven't trained yourself in certain grammatical subjects?

If all you do is practise input your monitor will go apeshit anytime you try to produce a sentence in speech or writing, as it's a completely alien thing to do for you.

And let's not forget about the affective filter. The more you put out, the more comfortable you'll be in using said language & the lower the affective filter will be. And especially with languages such as Japanese/Chinese/Korean, which are so fundamentally different from our Romanic/Germanic languages it is a daunting experience for many to start producing output.

Yes, Krashen says comprehensible input is essential to language learning/acquisition. But straight up ignoring output or saying that is more important than producing output is not something he would ever say. Input and output are both essential.

Just replying to all the comments, of course watching anime and listening to music is only good as a beginner's tool for listening practise. To really improve listening learners would really need move away from anime and such consume more complex and educational audio. Watching anime is more like a introduction to learning Japanese and it's more fun then reading a book on grammar.

part of it is to rehear the same easy and grammar and words over and over again, because the more natural those become, the easier it will be to parse harder words

instead of not understanding full sentences because you're not used to hearing the same easy grammar mumbled through over and over, instead you instantly know it and can spot the small things you miss

like literally all the subfaggots have to do is realize that the kana are phonetic. meaning every single word you read (including kanji that has furigana) has a sound corresponding to it. so what do you do if you encounter something you dont know how to say? you sound every single character like you did when you were a fucking child. take おにぎり for example. if you dont how it sounds, just sound out every single letter. "O-NI-GI-RI". then just say it together: "onigiri", like wow, was that so hard? now that you know how to say it, you should also know how it sounds to your ears. fortunately nihongo is not like english so most words are pronounced in the same exact way. so when someone else says it, you should be able to pick up on it. its the most brain dead thing to know.

in anime, people tend to have an accepting attitude towards each other despite their differences and personal weaknesses. for example, even useless dojikko characters are cherished. i think this is made possible by the fact that all of the characters are attractive.

Even if you don’t know a single word of Japanese, immersion in the form of listening will still be of great benefit to you. The reason for this is that, when you first approach a new foreign language, your brain won’t yet be able to parse the sounds. The language will sound like one big blur of noise, instead of crisp consonants and vowels grouped into words. By simply listening to your target language, your brain will slowly get better at parsing the sounds. Eventually, you’ll start naturally picking out common words. This is the start of cultivating listening ability.

On the other hand, no matter how many words you’ve memorized, without actually listening to the language for hundreds of hours, you will understand close to nothing.

You might be surprised at how much you can learn from simply watching a Japanese TV show with no subtitles. Your unconscious mind is a pattern recognition machine. Once you start exposing it to Japanese, it will immediately get to work decoding the sound system, grammar, and lexicon of the language. You’ll slowly start understanding more and more, but won’t be able to explain why. This is the counter-intuitive mechanism of language acquisition. It might be something that’s hard to fully grasp until you’ve started experiencing it for yourself.

Does this work bros? Can I just watch anime wthout understanding a single word of it?

we call it white noising if all you do is listen without focusing on trying to understand whats being said. you have to actively immerse yourself into trying to understand whats being said by putting effort into it. starting with anime is not necessarily a bad choice but its super time inefficient to do for that kind of thing if you're a beginner. you have to start with stuff at the appropriate level for yourself (n+1) lol

Is google translate the only translator for Japanese I can rely on or is there something better. Whenever I’m struggling with a sentence/phrase I will sometimes go there to check if I interpreted it right, but of course it doesn’t always give back a correct translation. Also, is there any way to practice vocabulary and grammar that’ll give me instant feedback? I’m not really asking for something intricate, just something that will tell me if I’m right or wrong, while maybe breaking down the sentence for me
