I bought all my dolls while being a university student too and I now own five DDs. I got my first DDs by working part-time and ever since I've bought more by saving/doing part-time jobs and odd jobs. Buying them piece by piece (like a head first, then a body, then wig etc) helps if you're in a tight spot. I've graduated now tho.

If 1/6 feels like a size you're interested in, then go for it. Find one that you really like and feel connection to. You might need to hunt stuff second-hand and wait for things to pop up, but it's worth it.

1/4 sized MDD is also a great option like >>24778799 said. I actually have a few friends who bought 1/6 dolls as an introduction to the hobby but soon regretted it because the pool for clothes/wigs/etc. is so much smaller than 1/4 (not to mention 1/3). MDD is a very manageable and super cute size with a lot of options.

It's hard to tell (it's not my doll) but if you look at the neck you can just catch the top of a body stocking. The volks ones are great if you don't plan on having any (or just a little around the tops of the thighs) skin showing.
Staining is going to happen eventually, but it's not the end of the world. Dream Rescue works great, and if it's really bad, Volks and Obitsu (Azone are Obitsu bodies) sell all the parts separately, so you can change it out, and then have stained pieces around for the clothes that stained in the first place. Smartdoll is out of luck in that regard though.
The one part you should always be paranoid about staining is the head, as that's kinda irreplaceable unless it's a standard faceup.

This lad is right. The SL1 is more than enough for doll photos, since they're mostly going to be static and the higher end SLRs excel at low-light photography and other more demanding subjects. You'd be better off getting a solid tripod and some nice lenses.

One of the nice advantages of the Canon line is you can buy adapters for older lenses from other brands and get a bunch of lenses on the cheap, as long as you don't mind manual focus and aperture.

I hate using a tripod more than life itself but dude's right, they're an absolute game-changer once you get a good one, slow down, and really plan your shots. They're perfect for things like dolls since (gravity permitting) they're not going anywhere once they're posed. A lot of it's just practice, too. You can get good photos with damn near anything. Don't worry if your photos are shit at first, my early doll photos aren't even worth posting. You'll get better the more you do it.

If you're in the northern hemisphere, move somewhere with unobstructed east or south facing windows and be home in the mid to late morning. You'll need to switch things up depending on the season, but it's usually fine outside of winter.

Buy lights you can control. Even something as simple as a clamp light with an adjustable neck will give you a lot on control(light output is not really an issue since dolls don't move and you can just take a longer exposure). Lamps that take bulbs are going to be more useful since you can change the bulbs for color or power. You can also buy some colored paper and foamboard to make cheap reflectors for split lighting otherwise bounced light, which will appear softer than a direct bulb. Pic related, the blue was from a daylight bulb and the red was bounced off a red piece of paper.

Experiment with it. Have fun with it.

Keep in mind that the breasts have to match your doll's model and skin tone. For example, if you have semi-white DDSf3 you have to find a bust that states that if fits that skin tone and model, otherwise it won't fit.

Like one of the anons mentioned, either buy a custom head from Yahoo Auctions or buy a blank head from VOLKS' wedstore and send it to a custom faceup artist.
For auction heads, use search terms like DDH or ドルフィードリーム and just scroll away. You might have to lurk for several days/weeks/months for a head you like to pop up, and when one does, you need to take part in the auction. Prices for custom heads generally vary between 200-2500 dollars depending on who made the head etc, so you'll be spending a pretty penny if you plan to win.
If you buy a blank head and send it to a custom faceup artist, you'll need to have some sort of idea of what kind of faceup you'll want your doll to have. Collect example pictures and describe desired features for the artist. Best place to find artists is instagram, English-speaking artists are harder to find than Japanese/Chinese. @shinesworshop, @x3ash and @charlotee_krai are some of the examples who do custom faceups.

The frame is the only major difference, the dimensions of the body are the same. That said, the difference in pose-ability is pretty minor, so it depends on what you want. Also, the F3 is newer, and will be supported longer (spare parts) and the DDy has the same frame as the DDIII and those have known weak points.

Dyeing wigs is a possibility and it's actually very easy, cosplayers do it regularly for their wigs. The problem is mainly the fact that dyed wigs tend bleed color even after several washes so the possibility of staining a doll is high.

They're bootlegs, usually. For resin dolls, cheaper companies like Resin Soul are a good entry point. Check sites like acbjd to see what's on sale, too, and keep an eye on the instagram #bjdsales tag, too. Sometimes people post dolls for cheap if they're leaving the hobby or have other reasons for a quick sale. Ebay, Amazzon, and the rest are usually bootleg central. Etsy can be hit or miss -- a lot of artist dolls are sold there legitimately (I pre-ordered the Into the Deep Dolls Daoine Maithe Solas Gealaí boy Bán for under 100 bucks (it's very tiny), but there are also people selling scams on there, too, so it takes some doing to find the good amongst the bad.

I think it IS 1:1 scale, for the later chapters. I went back and looked through the chapters, and Shinku looks much bigger in the early chapter, but when older Jun shows up she's tiny.

For what it's worth, the doorknobs in my house are at about 100cm, so the Shinku in the Deen anime should have no problem reaching them(80cm) but the manga also shows her as nearly as tall as a door handle in the first chapter.

I think the body suit i got was defective because I broke the zipper immediately when i put it on the body. Do you think I could get a replacement if I contact volks directly?

It's upsetting that these issues exist since the doll was expensive. It's like they didn't do enough QA or R&D for this release.

I assume it was the easiest way to design it so that 1. it was still separate from the wig 2. looked as close as possible to the game 3. stayed in place as securely as possible. I'm not a doll designer or fashion designer so take my guesses with a grain of salt.

it's normal, the DDf3 bodies are notorious for this. You're gonna have to take off her clothes and just kind of... finagle her leg back on. And even if it was broken, DD parts are pretty easy to come by and replace, you can buy them on the volks site. It's ok, anon.

Just so you know, the limited parts to her are her head, eyes, wig, and clothes. Everything else is replaceable and standard DDdy parts. The F3 frames can be a bit tricky, especially around the hip joint making sure it's seated correctly.
