Blue's a good color to start with imo, because trying to do a real skintone can be hell to match, but no matter what shade of blue you get you can say it was intentional and it will probably look fine.

I don't have a guide, just some tips. The color you get out of the pot is going to lighten up over the next two weeks, so dye WAY darker than you planned and hope it fades out to what you wanted. Vinyl parts dye in minutes, but the joints will dye in seconds, so be careful dyeing them and if they don't perfectly match, be kind to yourself about it. You can do the faceup after dyeing, but I'm not sure if one will stay on if you do it beforehand. Either way, whatever happens, be sure to come here and show us.

For shopping services I recommend Superbuy, Bhiner or 42agent. Taobaotrends used to be my favorite but they're shutting down and not accepting new orders.

As a general rule of thumb, use a lot of Google Translate. If you want to search for stuff, 3分 refers to 1/3 sized dolls and 4分 to 1/4 etc.
If an item is priced 999 or 9999, it usually means that it's sold out. Your SS will inform you if you have sold out items in your cart, so it's fine. It's true, there's a lot of knockoff stuff on Taobao, but if you're just buying clothes/wigs/eyes etc. you're gonna be fine. You might encounter stores that sell the same doll clothes, but that's probably because they source them from the same wholesalers. The stores that I linked usually make their own stuff and are generally very high quality.
Never get actual dolls or doll parts from Taobao tho, those are almost always knockoffs. Clothes and accessories etc. are fine.

Unfortunately options really are limited as fuck anon. If you can find an Obitsu 55cm body, those are perfect- but they never come up for sale, and someone who's restoring one right now, they're a pain in the ass once the joints get loose. The Obitsu 60cm Male body is discontinued too, but it's comically buff. Kirito/Len are good options but impossible to find. Smart Doll Male bodies are pretty built as well, but they're even harder to find and comically overpriced when they do show up.

Volks has a "cute male" body in their lineup, but you can only get it from japan. You might want to ask a proxy to physically go to Doll Point and get you one as a custom doll -- which will be hella expensive, but cheaper than Len or Kirito would be.

I'm considering fitting DD heads on resin bodies at this point. The situation is pretty dire.

If you're looking to customize the makeup, then I'd say any of the male DDs (Kirito, Len or 9S) would work fine. They all have great potential of looking androgynous, it's all dependent on the custom makeup. So I'd say just get the one that you feel the most instant connection to.

As for standard heads, DDH-07 and DDH-09 are obvious choices for a male doll. Then you'd have to get the body tho, but at least you can always use a personal proxy buyer to get it for you from Dream Choice.

eBay is just scalper central, period. You can also make a WTB post on Instagram. There are two hashtags actually: #bjdsale and #bjdsales. I'd use both and search through both just because some people use one and not the other. I don't think you'll have any trouble tracking down a Miku, especially if you're not picky on exactly which release you're getting. I did actually replace the default wig on mine and get a custom faceup just because I wasn't a fan of the default wig quality (I used a Leeke wig) and then I wanted a softer faceup to go with the more romantic hair color/texture I picked out. Collectibles usually rise in value, that's just how it is. Some people simply buy them just for the resale value. I wouldn't sell my dolls for cheaper than what I paid for them, but then again all my dolls are limited exclusives from 2012-2013.
If you truly want Miku, then paying around 70k on Mandarake etc. isn't bad, it's on the cheap side of DDs. But if you aren't super serious or in a rush, you could wait for a reboot sale (if it ever happens, there's no quarantee for a reboot sale). It all comes down to how impatient you are.

I guess that's my problem. I can afford them all, only once did I financially inconvenience myself (my 'grail' came up on ebay. No regrets there and I recovered just fine,) and I make sure all the bills are taken care of and we have savings squared away and everything before I even look at the doll stuff.
