Values. Here's the copypasta that goes with it:

Real shadows do not follow lines. When you color, don't think about where you've drawn, think about where the light is coming from and how it affects the shadows.

Fig 1: Looking at a Rinoa figurine. I start to get a feel for the general form by picking out the darkest values first.

Fig 2: Lay out the entire figure. DO NOT ZOOM IN. DO NOT WORK IN DETAIL. If you focus too much on small areas, I guarantee you will lose sight of proportions. Just paint what you see in general.

Fig 3: Smooth everything out, work in the details after you've got the figure down.

Same here. I still have very little skill. I spent about four years drawing shittily, thinking that just practicing was the way to improve.

I found that I was not getting better despite tons of practice. I didn't start improving until I realized that all I was doing by "practicing" drawing the same crappy stick/blob figures over and over again was drawing shitty stick/blob figures. I wasn't learning new information that I could apply.

I didn't start improving until I tried to draw real stuff and cartoons from reference, and that's only been for the past year and a half.

That being said, I'll probably be humiliated to learn that a lot of you who draw better than me have only been drawing for about a month.

Your story may be very different.

Should I continue to try and improve this drawing, or should I start completely over? After a while, I get sick of looking at a drawing, and feel like anything I might do to it would fuck it up more, but I see other people work on the same drawing, posting incremental updates, until it looks good.

How to proceed?

You really are my own clone.
Really, the only thing to do (and I'm a hypocrite for saying this) is to keep drawing. You probably won't make it look worse, and if you do, that's what incremental saves are for. You can only get better by drawing more (be it continuing what you're doing or starting another one) not by staring at it.

Says the person who has had the same barely-a-sketch open for a couple months now without working on it.

>> No.2462260

>>2462248

It really depends. If you really can't see any ways to improve with the current version then perhaps doing a new one is better for practice. I mean just staring at the thing isn't going to help if you're not motivated to complete it.

Oh also on an unrelated note, always flip your drawings horizontal to check how it looks afterwards. Sometimes, actually a lot of times, you'll find some huge flaws that you never noticed before because you looked in that position for so damn long.

>> No.2462267

different anon here. i don't really agree. sorry, but /ic/ is often, most times way, way too harsh, even when people come looking for genuine help. 'stop drawing' isn't good advice. nothing will improve in a day but 'stop drawing' is the worst thing to tell someone, even if they presently suck, and you see it so often. screaming LOOMIS doesn't much help either. its a whole nother tirade, but not everything is anatomical perfection and photorealistic lighting. its no excuse to not try, or not get close to what you want, but there is no one way. in so many words, /ic/ is not for everyone. There are good posts there, good crits, good improvement, but most of the time its like people purposely try to be as brash and unnecessary as possible, and that really doesn't do shit, despite what people say. the 'tear you down to build you up' approach doesn't always work. just saying, and in this case its not even that, its just 'tear you down because i can'.

>>2462260
i agree. if anon doesn't see anything happening, it might be best to start over fresh. its true that you will just frustrate yourself. Also, though flipping things horizontal is good advice, i personally can't really flow with it, because though you will see alot of errors, thats true of a lot of works, good and bad, when flipped or changed to how they were not originally meant to be viewed. it could prove a good exersice in the beginning stages, but i wouldn't personally rely, or let it make or break a drawing. i understand you weren't saying such, but i just felt the need to state that.

these threads are always really interesting. perhaps we should have them daily/weekly/something-ly?
