At least ZUN seems to treat Meiling better then the fans do.

She got a nice mention about how she's surprisingly polite and respectful so long as you don't attempt to trespass into the mansion. She'll even take on martial arts challenges without forcing it to a fight to the death. It's gotten to the point she is commonly challenged by other martial artists in Gensokyo as a safe test of their skill and a form of entertainment for the lady of the house.

All in all, Meiling is one of the nicer girls you could encounter. Just don't try and get past her without a invitation.

I don't think it's incorrect to say that Meiling is a popular character. Popularity contests are all well and good for working out characters people love the best, but with the wealth of favourites to choose from it wouldn't surprise me if she came up in most fan's top ten. It's just when it comes to choosing your favourite girl there are usually better candidates.

Meiling always gets a ton of art, some really good ones too.

Nitori is meant to be nice though. With Meiling it's like a strange little side detail you read about later. She's the safest person you could meet involved in the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

As for her being a pet, the same could be said of Sakuya. The only difference is in rank. End of the day is they both do what they are told by their masters. Nothing wrong with it.
