Hunter X Hunter is the greatest literary work of the 20th and 21st century. It is flawless. The apex of modern literature. Question is - will Hunter X Hunter be studied like the many works of previous philosophers like Kafka or Nietzsche? Will reading Hunter X Hunter be mandatory when studying to get a major in philosophy?Chimera Ant Arc was Universe-tier. It cured my porn addiction and took me off the path of sure self-destruction much like Grave of the Fireflies helped me stop smoking and being racist. The rest of the show was great but I fear the author blew his load with CA and will struggle to even reciprocate the same level of genius, thus the incredibly drawn out hiatus.Hunter X Hunter is not only the greatest manga of all time, but its fanbase upholds its flawless quality by always being mature when everyone else is chimping out around them. Moeshitters have lost their composure a long time ago, while we are still here carrying ourselves in a professional manner.The whole concept sounded intriguing, but I didn't believe it could be watchable at all. I mean, a fight that lasts an hour in real-time stretched to around twenty-five episodes sounds like painfully, unbearably, titanically slow pacing. But everyone seemed to rave about it, and I was just so curious, so eventually I caved in and begun my 148 episode Hunter x Hunter journey about two-months ago. In total, I watched more than one hundred twenty-minute episodes of anime just because I wanted to watch the second half of the Chimera Ant arc.
I just finished 135 yesterday, and I'm probably not the first person to ever say this, but this arc is fucking great. It's better than great. It's the best fucking thing ever.
The thing that most struck me is how the entire arc felt like one long work of literature, like a 19th century baroque novel or a Shakespearean tragedy. It's rife with symbolism, irony, themes, and felt appropriately mature and tonally rich. Some of the passages spoken by the narrator were so beautiful and memorable (e.g. the humans in the sky line), and the narration served to create the feeling that I was reading some intricate tapestry of prose. I loved how tragic and anticlimactic the death of Meruem was, because it was appropriately Homeric and richly meaningful in tandem with the themes presented by the arc; and it's because of this that I speak of him in the same way I do as Macbeth, or Oedipus, or John Milton's Lucifer. Some scenes, like the match-cut of the boots stomping on the insects between the Rose bomb used on human cities spoke to me on a visceral level.
I had a quick rudimentary thought during the closing episodes that you could probably interpret the Chimera Ant arc as an allegory for the history of Imperial Japan, from its industrialization and expansion in the nineteenth-century by copying the powerful West, to its nuclear demise and subsequent incorporation into the vast global economic hegemony of the post-war US.

To make decisions and events feel more realistic Togashi sometimes feels the need to drag you along through uninteresting character interactions or exposition. Sometimes he feels compelled to tell a story when he doesn't want to because he's trying to set something up for the future. For example he needed to write heaven's arena in order to introduce nen which involved that boring gimp squad that Gon and Killua had to work themselves up to defeating. This method of story telling is still infinitely better than 99% of anime and 100% of all other shounen, all of which sacrifice realism for cheap spectacle. The first half of the CA arc suffers from similar issues. Though of course HxH is still easily the greatest story in manga/anime and it's not close.

Please don't try to learn 2000 kanji all at once before reading anything or even studying grammar; not only is 2000 a completely arbitrary number, you're not going to remember any of them without the actual context (vocabulary) in which they're used. They'll just be meaningless symbols that you grinded out for no reason. Not to mention that it's not very fun going at it this way.

Still though, I really don't think that just grinding out "2000 kanji" before really even familiarizing oneself the language is going to do anyone any good. Figure out something natural that works for you once you've actually read some Japanese and understand how grammar, vocabulary, and kanji work.

As an aside, I really must belabor the point that 2000 is such an arbitrary number that it's meaningless. Like, which 2000? There are far more than 2000 kanji in common usage in Japanese and even if you just want to learn all of the jouyou ones (and jouyou has its fair share of kanji only really used in people/place names, at that) you're going to need to go to 2136, not 2000. I would honestly estimate that you need to know anywhere from 3000-3500 to read 99% of what you come across in day-to-day Japanese life and you're going to want to get close to 4000 if you want to read all of the nonsense people use in eroge. So, uh, yeah. Don't try learning some random number of kanji because it's probably not enough and you're not going to remember them all anyway.

It's that the textbook is taking away valuable immersion time with the impression it's giving you something more efficient.

It's that they aren't the language at all, and their real goal is /convincing you/ that you understand, and selling you that confidence.
A textbook will be praised for how well it gets across information. Not whether that information is useful or correct, because you wouldn't know and that's why you're buying it in the first place.
You can learn a language without a textbook, but you can't learn a language without a lot of immersion.
I wouldn't really say that someone is a "traditional learner" just for using a textbook though, because if they actually got to a high level there'd be nothing "traditional" about them unless they did a hell of a lot of one-to-one language exchange.
Ultimately what gets people there is immersion, i.e. interaction with the language, whether they focus on it or not.
So as smug as it sounds, if you got good it's because you were doing immersion.
The better question to ask might be
-1. What do you think you are getting out of a textbook?

is there a reason to use anything higher than 'Introduction' level textbooks, other than a roundabout way of saying:
