It depends on you, really, on how motivated you are to learn.
I would say two years worth of classes will teach you the grammar basics, with outside reading to boost vocab and kanji recognition.
Once you have the grammar rules (which is not very complex at all), it's just a matter of vocabulary.

Since there's no classes geared towards reading entertainment media (as opposed to say, business communication), that's why I say two years. If you're dedicated and have nothing better to do, you can come up to relatively competent reading levels much faster. Your conversational skill will be close to worthless though, because you'll probably never use it.

One thing to keep in mind is that there's varied complexity; old JRPG's like the original NES Final Fantasy use almost no kanji and get more complex as the systems do.

I'd prefer an F/Z anime because a VN would take way fuck longer for me to get.

Also i'm having the feeling a lot of people thought the FSN anime was directed/handled shittily or something? I thought it was pretty good, not -perfect- mind but it was fucktons better than the Tsukihime anime.
