I'm surprised how well people have received human backup singers in songs recently and I think it's great - it's fun seeing the producer 'interact' with their vocaloid through a song, it's the sort of fun stuff you can only do with vocaloid.

I like the Rin/Len version they play on concerts too, not sure who tuned Len there but he sounds good. The version on MegaMix is a bit weird though, they mixed the Len and Mikito-P back vocals and it sounds worse than just either one.

I don't listen to songs with male human vocals unless the song itself is really good so I just quickly skim through for 15 seconds and then say fuck it I'm out.
There were one or two where the song itself was actually really good so I kept them. As far as I remember, one of those only had like one sentence of human singing.

I was really disappointed at first (choppy, nasal, noisy, lacking emotion), but after some later songs I started believing in the potential. Some later songs had a lot more emotion, seems more stable in (usually higher) ranges than vocaloid (especially v4x), maybe because of the choppiness it's easier to understand some transitions (though some vowel -> consonant transitions are still just bad), the pencil tool for pitch is really noticeable in terms of the average tuning and unlike most engine voicebank migrations NT Miku definitely still sounds like Miku. The engine noise is terrible though, it's like they are recording her with a cheap saturated microphone in the middle of an array of TVs emitting white noise.

The problem is that with Vocaloid voicebanks they really only have one chance to make it right in basically one generations. Even Miku only got one patch that I remember (in her chinese voicebank, and mostly since she wouldn't get a V5 otherwise).

As long as NT engine reaches parity with Vocaloid, they can just keep patching the voicebank until it gets the result they want, so a Luka v4x scenario wouldn't happen.
