in my opinion, its a toss-up

Out of those three probably Archer. But there are more tragic characters in the Nasuverse.

if by tragic you mean shitty then I guess it's Sakura.

At least Sakura gets to one day permanently die, and Sacchin is already dead.

Archer, because unlike those other two bitches he tried to change his situation and he was actually a good guy. He tried to help people while the other two were sluts.

An innocent boy who only wanted to help people so they didn't need to cry caught in an infinite cycle of murder.

It's a hard thing to rate, really. If you try and rate who was more tragic, then you might think "This > That" but, to the character, they might feel much worse about a specific thing than another one (if they could feel), so you might say that's more tragic. Personally, I'd say Archer. Poor guy spent his entire life trying to help people, only, at the end, to realise it was all for nothing, and that he's wasted his life on people who don't give a shit. I'd say realising the only thing you've ever lived for is bullshit is worse than losing a loved one (unless said thing was the loved one, in which case they're equal)

Not on the official timeline. Her end on Melty Blood is quite good: She gets a lot of friends, she remains among the living (in a manner of speaking) and gets to see her loved one every once in a while.
If you ask me, that's much better than dying miserably, after turning into a murderer and losing all your humanity. And all for what? To get the attention of a guy who already had a crush on her on the first place! It was all for nothing! Not only cold and miserable, but pointless!

I'd say Archer. As Shirou, we all know how fucked up he is...he lives to help people. Finally achieves that dream and becomes a hero. Only to find that his realism is actually shit. And then he becomes a Counter Guardian, summoned only to kill for eternity. Yeah...that sucks.

Archer, he has to repeat his mistake for an eternity.
High tiers are Kariya, Kirei, Kiritsugu, and Kuzuki.

He lives in UBW, with Sakura taking care of him. Archer will not remember what he learned in the war due to the nature of being a summoned copy.

So even if he gets his answer, he would never know that he did and what it was.

Actually no, Arturia and EMIYA are the only two Servants that are NOT copies. They're the originals, Arturia because she never died and EMIYA because he is a Counter Guardian. However, Archer gets recorded memories like books imprinted into his memory, but he doesn't "remember" them. He just gets the records uploaded into his brain.

Just finding the records is the impossible part because he has so many, and to look through them just has to bring him more pain.

So his promise to Rin is one book inside of a massive library that he'll probably never read again, thus, increasing his bitterness even more.

Even says so in the end of UBW.

However, he wasn't wrong.

What the fuck? Mind of Steel is second only to HF Normal ending in distance from being Archer End. If any end was Archer End, it would have to be Continuation of the Dream, and even that is not exactly the same. If you want proof, one word: Avalon.

Kiritsugu's handling of this was to kill the smallest side. Archer adopted the thought.

This is the most inaccurate statement ever. In ALL the routes (but NOT Bad End 30) he learns how to use Magic Circuits right from Tohsaka, and Archer never adequately learned that, which is why he became brown. Also, look at the last line 20 fucking times.

Fate got a 10% Archer chance, according to Nasu. Since he learned proper magic use, it probably isn't.

He figures out he has an immense magical artifact inside of him at some point in his life. Whoop dee doo. He might've learned he had Avalon in him in UBW True after going to London, etc.

Maybe I'm just jaded by playing castly superior VNs, or it's Nasu's bloated, strange prose or the lack of mood, but no one in FSN strikes me as particularily tragic or suffer from any memorable issues.

It's not a magical artifact.

At least not as far as he's concerned, seeing as how it only does anything at all if you constantly feed it, which he apparently can't, especially if he never learned magic as you're stating, seeing as how it never fucking activated at all before Rin poured her most powerful jewel directly into it and it still needed so much energy after that it took the metaphorical magical stream between Shirou and Saber and reversed the metaphorical flow on the whole goddamn thing.

That girl with the sister in that one dream in Kagetsu Tohya who gets absorbed into Nero and then gets killed by Shiki.

Avalon in its dormant phase will just help not-dying when receiving a would that would cause you to die over an extended period of time (i.e. slowly bleeding out, burns). Avalon in its active phase will repair anything not instantly lethal.

Avalon NEVER activated in its full phase without Saber. It CANNOT. Tohsaka's jewel did NOT interact with Avalon in the slightest, nor did it even revert the damage. Rather, Rin created a new heart out of magic.
