Tomorrow will mark the one year anniversary of the GTA server's very first run. Since this is a special occasion, the server will be up tomorrow night at around 7 or 8 PM EST in place of the usual weekend runs. If you're free, come join us and play as your favorite Touhou!

I would also like to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who has played. Your guys' phenomenal ability to self-moderate yourselves, as well as your patience in the development of the server have allowed the entire year to pass with relatively no incident to speak of. Something like that is a real rarity given the nature of this project - so it's something you can really take pride in.

On a side note for anons who are familiar with SA rigging, what causes certain models to not export with their skin modifier? While most models work, there's quite a few that seem to suffer that problem and I've not found any solutions to it.

For like ped skins? I usually find it's because some textures that come with models are some weird bmp files that dont work properly. I just change them to pngs.
Sometimes it could be a problem the UV map (somewhat rare in pre-made models). Or the texture is not applied with the right parameters when you are rigging/exporting.

Not idea for cars or buildings though. I notice some vehicles have missing textures.

Also I was able learn/make a little something for this anniversary run.

Indeed, everything is set up as it should be. It's a very peculiar problem that only happens with a few ped models. My initial guess was given how flaky the exporter is too many polys might've been the problem, but Satori is sitting at 80K and is fine so that can't be the issue either. It's a real mystery.

Perhaps it was the scale of the model? I notice it was very small when I first opened it compared to normal SA ped sizes and had to scale it up quite a bit (and rotated/ flip it, but that shouldn't matter). That was the only weird thing I saw with this model.

Ah I forgot to say. All the vertex's on that dff model are assigned to Spine1 with full weight and Root has also been assigned to all the vertex with zero weight. You may just want to unassigned the Spine1 and start over for weight painting/assigning.

Thanks again anon. As I feared, it seems to be a problem with the DFF IO script for Max itself. Just trying to import that DFF into Max straight-up crashes the script. Wack. Worst case I can switch to Blender and rig these certain models through that.

Lame. Well If you don't have the time I can certainly do the weird ones offs that don't work with 3ds Max for you. I would just need the model (preferably the original model, with material/texture groups) and textures. Learning blender is a bit hassle in of itself even with the 2.8+ update and DragonFF is relatively new and has its own weird things that you have to look out for.

Now that I have looked into it on github, it seems that DragonFF does have an issue (or blender itself?) where the export files cannot open properly on other programs. So maybe its not totally 3DS Max DFF IO script? I don't know. Suck to know that the models i made can't be open with anything else as of now though...

I'll see what I can do first - I recall an anon that said there were some bugs that weren't present in older versions of the Max script at least, so I'll try giving those a shot too to see if they make any difference. It's unfortunate, but SA's modeling tools seem to be rather flaky at best.

I really dislike blender .dff exports wont be don't able to open properly in 3ds max but... I was able to fix Saki, Keiki, and Okuu's face. They had that a weird suntanned look before hand. Also some minor fixes to Yorohime. Toyohime, and Chiruyri. Just copy and replace.

I actually just switched out a few overworld props that were only used in one or two spots just for that reason. They were only intended for the anniversary, once the server officially goes up again they'll be cycled back out with the normal spawn, so not to worry. Hopefully the custom object ID's aren't too far off, in the long-term that seems to be the only current major problem that we might run into.

I said I was taking a break, but that turned out to be a minor lie. I just can't help myself. Here's something fun - I figured out how to crack open compiled luac scripts. What this means is I can take a look at better-developed scripts and see how they actually did something now, rather than try to rely on guesswork. And on top of that it opens up a whole load of other possibilities too.

There's still a lot of kinks in it since this sort of thing isn't exactly my expertise and there's a lot of potential variables that screw things up, but it's a nice start.

Funny thing about that, the way the scripter did this was rather clever. The "bullets" are actually marker objects - like what you can use to mark interiors, created at the muzzle of the gun when you fire. They don't actually effect weapon hitscans.

Well... the first one has a model that has been replaced but it was just a place holder until I figured out handling parameters work, which I have figured out for the most part.

And another thing:
I'm in the process of working on 3 cars centered around a theme, with there own appropriate handling characteristics that I have made, and their own touhou themed skin. The cars that have their UV posted here already have a custom handling that I did for them as a test. I plan to replace the solair and sunrise with those two. The other three I plan to use is the Bloodring Banger, BF Injection, and Buccaneer, which haven't been changed yet to my knowledge. Though maybe another anon has plans to use those in the future, if that's the case then its no big deal since I can adjust the handling parameters to any model and make them drive how they look. This also means i can fix stuff that have that problems, like trying to enter some cars with right hand drive, or making Mystia's food truck actually driveable.
Though, i'm wondering if some anons here perfer Mystia's food truck just the way it is.

It's only been two weeks! It'll probably be on break for around a month or two. I know it sucks waiting, but it's much easier to work on things when there's no weekly obligation to rush something out. I'm sure you guys want to see more substantial updates to the project too.

Just to give a bit of insight into ongoing things; the main thing right now is gamemodes - mainly PvE gamemodes or cooperative-based things, as there are none right now on the server so I've been floating a few ideas to at least get something started on that end. MTA's bot AI isn't exactly feature-rich or well-optimized as seen with the fairy pedestrians (there's also sync problems when there's too many present at once like becoming invulnerable) so I'll have to be a bit creative. I have an idea or two right now, but they're just concepts. A good well-polished gamemode is something that's a lot more involved than most of what's on the server right now, so it's tricky planning out something that will be practically doable as it'll be a long-project. I'd also like to expand on a few other features before the server's back up: The vehicle system needs some brushing up for example, and there's a lot of redundant scripts that need to be cleared out too.

On that note I suggest clearing the contents of your mods>deathmatch>resources folder since there's a bunch of old client-side files like models that are no longer used. If space isn't a concern you can freely disregard that though.

Some more progress on things. The sprite system that was showcased a while back has been smoothed out a lot, and also has some limited animation functionalities now - walking, jumping, attacking and so on. This is probably one of my favorite little side-projects to work on, since it's rather unique and can be creatively used in quite a few different things.

This idea is unreasonable and bad, but it's a idea you can play around with nonetheless.

Fairy Extermination.

You have to hunt down armed fairies that spawn randomly on fixed spawn points/area around the map (i'm envisioning the Gensokyo/Tokyo map here but it can be anywhere really). Only one spawn is active at a time to bring everyone together. The goal is to exterminate the fairies as fast as possible for the most amount of money. Each kill gives you a certain amount of money and there is a time limit (15 minutes tops ?).

This can be done with 2 teams battling out for blood money. Though Ideally, I envision the use of current gang system, so that the three factions can have another source of revenue to fill up their bank and once the round(?) ends. This can be PvE focused or PvP focused, depending much damaged (if at all) you can do to the opposing team/gang. Getting capped by fairies, enemies, and teammates, will of course make you lose all your money so staying alive until the end is imperative.

Again, the goal of this game mode is extermination of the fairies. Killing others (if enabled) will only hinder them in getting money, but you will receive little no money at all for PvP. Heck you might even as going as far as losing a certain amount of money for non fairy kills. It could be waste of ammo and time since the fairies are the main source of income, but it is a strategy for winning I suppose. The spawn point/area should only last 3 minutes tops(?) and should be spread out some distance to incentivize group travels, and should be away from gun shops.

How about a modified version of Protect the Shrine Maiden?

Instead of there just being 1 shrine maiden, players are divvied into three teams - police, terrorists and psychopaths. Each team has a "shrine maiden" who they must protect from the other two teams. Last team standing wins.

As for PvE, how about a survival footrace across SA? No weapons, no vehicles. Everone starts at grove street and have to race to get to markers strewn across the map. Except zombies spawn everywhere. People will have to get creative with fences and jumping to roofs. If we could edit the walljump script to be a lot more forgiving, then people could really come to use SA's verticality. Right now, the script has very limited use, since the walljump occurs at a strict angle from the wall you kicked from, and offers little control. Also, you can't follow a walljump with a ledge grab, which makes it impossible to actually scale tall buildings, because the moment you run out of wall, you just fall to your death.

I don't know how feasible any of this is, but I'm just throwing out ideas at random, in case any of them catches your fancy.

Ask and you shall (eventually) receive, Bomb Tag is now a real thing! One player at the start of a round is randomly chosen to carry the bomb with a random timer, who can then pass the bomb on to someone else by punching them. The timer continues through player to player until it finally explodes - killing the unfortunate carrier while also injuring any nearby, after which another new player is randomly chosen with a fresh timer and it begins anew, until all players are eliminated.

It's the server's first truly unique game mode, made entirely from the ground up. It's nothing special and probably loaded with surprise features until it can be more thoroughly tested, but I still hope it winds up being of some amusement.

Since Touhou is all about girls throwing danmaku at each other while flying I wondered if it's be hard to make the jetpack invisible and throw in some tilt to it while moving so it looks authentic.

Bomb Tag isn't the only thing I've had in the works! I'd been thinking of a fun way to implement a hide-and-seek mode for a while, and eventually settled on a Prop hunt-styled gamemode. It's a bit more ambitious, but it's been fun to work on. There are two teams; Props and Hunters. Props are defenseless, but have three abilities:
Perfect imitation of a nearby object (you can even be rolled around from physics!)
"Cloning" an object, basically the same as the above but you can move around, jump, etc, more mobility but easier to be noticed.
And finally removing yourself from an object, which will leave the object at your last location as it (if you moved at all).
All three abilities can be activated with keybinds.

The hunters objective is to kill all the props within the time limit. However, to keep them from just shooting every object, any shots on an object that were NOT a player prop will remove a percentage of your health. If all the props are killed, the hunters will win. But if the timer runs out, or all the hunters died, the props will win. Like with Bomb Tag, this gamemode is made entirely from the ground up and not based on anything pre-existing, so hopefully it proves to be fun.

But the good news is an authentic flying script is definitely doable - we've even played with a few on the server before, though they're generally kept off since they have a few problems. These threads never get a whole lot of real discussion and I feel like talking, so maybe my disjointed ramblings about working on a prophunt gamemode might be interesting to any lurkers.

How do you create a fun gamemode that enables a player to, as close as possible, imitate a nearby object that is completely indiscernible from the original? The way it works is that when a player presses a certain key (like "e") it fires off a colsphere on that player's position, and if there are any valid objects within the colsphere, it attaches that player to one of the objects. Now, right off the bat there are three problems with creating a perfectly believable imitation player attachment to an object:
- The targeting marker that appears when you aim at a player
- The player's shadow will still appear even if the player themselves are not visible
- Allow said player to be damaged through the object

The solution to the first problem was simple, as it's a built-in function within MTA. The second problem can't be resolved through scripting but what you can do with a bit of creativity is use shaders to remove the shadows on pedestrians for the duration of the gamemode. The third problem has proven to be trickier, and I wouldn't say I've found a "real" solution to it yet, and that's because of GTA's collisions. If you simply attach yourself to an object, then it functions almost like armor because of its collision - you can't be damaged. If you remove the object's collisions, to damage the player however, then you also make it immediately apparent that the object is a player if they bother to check. For most objects this isn't actually a problem, it's only on larger things like vending machines, and tables, that it's obvious. I feel like I'm pretty close to a real solution to this, but it still needs more work.

Of course, there's also things like balance. How do you make it as fair as possible to both teams? This will need more than just my contained testing to actually adjust for, but right now, Hunters can miss 5 shots before dying, and the timer is set to 5 minutes before props win. 5 shots might seem low, but if you figure the server's average players are around 20, and the teams are split evenly, then Hunters would need to either: A. Miss 50 shots cumulatively or B. Run out a 5 minute timer to lose. You want to make sure they can actually make a couple of mistakes too, and don't die right into a match, so 5 shots seems like a good medium right now, might raise it to 10 or more depending how many objects I place in a single map.

All in all it's been fun to work on so far despite my inexperience writing gamemodes. Something else I might add is allowing you to imitate NPCs as well, but I fear I might be giving too large an advantage to the props. Although props will be able to play sounds to "taunt" nearby players and clue them in to their relative position for fun too.
