2430042 No.2430042 [Reply] [Original]

Continued from the two threads yesterday since they maxed out a bit earlier than I expected.

Ask not what Touhou can do for you, but what you can do for Touhou.

Use this thread for discussion of ideas, sharing of works in progress, or as a way to improve on your skills or the lack thereof.

There were many good points that were brought up previously, and someone also submitted a nice rearrange of Romantic Falls. There were also discussions about programming, writing qualities and the Touhou VN that was in progress. However, it is difficult to summarize everything.

In general this is a more expanded version of your average drawing thread.

Helpful links previously mentioned

SAI Painter: http://www.sendspace.com/file/2p1css

Some Reference Photos: http://www.bartlam-madeley.com/htm/Femalehtmfiles/Femalesitting/fulllenghsettingdarkdress.html

Some tips for the beginners who want to draw, always use a reference photo. The difference can be phenomenal. Also painting in a large canvas tends to add more detail to art works. The only thing that is really required to become good is the will to push forward despite whatever criticism you face.

Why Touhou? Why not just do an "Original Works" thread?

I mean go ahead and do fanstuff of whatever you like, but do consider that there is already a large sea of Touhou fanstuff already out there. If you want to toss even more stuff in that pile or even piss in that sea, then be my guest.

>> No.2430107

It doesn't change the fact that many people have ideas for what they would like to produce. It is just that many lack the necessary skill set or collaboration from other people. I'm not asking for quality works here, but everyone needs a starting point. The chance of progress is always 0% if nothing ever gets done. I know people are willing to participate from the activity in the previous threads.

I think it's great when people learn to draw from life before they take on a stylized art like anime. You learn a lot of things.

Just remember that when you start to do anime, you throw 70% of that away.

OK, fine, I've been resisting posting this for a couple of days now...

http://brineking.deviantart.com/art/Project-110271852

I'm not planning on making it a game that uses touhou characters, but I can't draw for shit. So if someone who likes touhou wants to take over art direction and just let me focus on coding, that's fine. It won't really be exactly like a Zun touhou game, but it could definitely employ danmaku. In fact, in the version that I haven't posted yet, I already have a focused mode programmed, that both slows your avatar down and reveals your hitbox, in addition to many other features, such as touhou-style dialog boxes.

Also, I've been burned on collaborations before by people who seemed really interested while we were discussing ideas, but after a couple of months of coding when it was time to integrate the art assets into my program, they had nothing to show, yet still wanted to retain ownership of the project. So, before we get started, I just want to see some sort of mark of dedication. Maybe you can draw some avatars for the characters to use during speeches. The current format I'm using is approximately 2.5 times as tall as wide, to show the character standing up in full costume... Just like Zun's games. I'll also need tilemaps and backgrounds, depending on how you want to do that. I'll probably even be possible to do some limited 3D rendering for the backgrounds, though we'll have to really consider how we actually want it to look.

I don't know if anyone's going to be interested, but I suppose it's worth a shot.

MUSIC TIPS

How to make a Touhou style song:

1.Pick a minor scale.
2.Loop the pattern of VI chord→VII chord→Im (tonic) chord over and over again (i.e. if the scale is A minor, just go F→G→Am over and over again).
3.Over the top of this chord progression, play a melody using mostly a pentatonic scale, i.e. in the case of A minor use the notes A, C, D, E, and G. You can use the other notes occasionally too.
4. Throw in an occasional change in the chord pattern, such as a IV chord (D for key A minor), a V chord (E for key A minor), or another chord made of notes in the scale (such as III or Vm, C and Em respectively in A minor key). If you go with the IV or V chord, make the melody hit the note in the chord that's not a scale note for extra effect (i.e. if you use D in A minor, use an F# in the melody, or if you use E, use a G#).
5.Have at least one part of the melody where it goes up one note→down two notes→up one note→down two notes, etc. on the pentatonic scale (for example, E-G-D-E-C for A minor key), this will give it that Touhou/Eastern sounding vibe.
6.Throw in a few random ass keychanges.

That's about, I think that guide will cover just about every song in Touhou.

MUSIC TIPS

How to make moe/denpa synth sounds:

moe-moe chime sound: Make an FM chime sound at a ratio of 1:5 or higher, put chorus on it. The stronger the FM (i.e. the more high harmonics) the more moe the sound will be, but you might have to eq down the high a bit if it starts to hurt your ears. Also, mix this sound with a chorus'd glockenspiel patch from a PCM sound bank or something for an even more moe sound.

"Eurobeat" type lead: get lots of saw waveforms, detune them a little bit (or use a supersaw wave form or something like that), add a quick pitch bend up from below on the attack of the sound using a pitch envelope or something. Another good thing to do is to make it so the waves are more detuned right at the beginning of the sound, and then quickly become closer in pitch to each other for the sustain (within 20 or 30 cents or so). For example, you could put a negative pitch envelopes on the attacks of some of the oscillators, and positives on the others, or you could put an LFO that makes the pitch waver really harshly for a split second on the attack, and control it with an envelope to make it quickly become less harsh during the sustain. Also, don't forget to put lots of reverb on it when you're done.

other good sounds for moe type songs:
-simple detuned saw wave with lots of portamento on it
-chiptunes type sounds (i.e. squares and pulses with fast arpeggios)
-random arpeggiators
-filtered drum break right before the chorus
-orchestra hits
-string pizzicato PCM patch, maybe mixed with a synth sound or fuck with the volume envelope to make it sound more mechanical and less like real strings
-try putting chorus on everything

If you don't mind pirating (which I'm sure you don't), try Reason. While the "hardware" style interface may be confusing at first, I think it's easier for beginners in the long run because it's got all the sounds there for you to use already. If you just start out with a sequencer program, you'll have to get good VSTs and what not, and as a beginner I think it would be hard to get used to using a bunch of different plugins as opposed to just one program. With Reason, all the basic sound banks and synths you need are already there, and if you decide you want to work with audio recordings or VSTs later on, you can always use rewire to run Reason through a different master program that supports such features.

WTF is this? Do you plan on staying a beginner forever?

Reason is only "user friendly" to people who already know how to use hardware synths/effects.

The only softsynth you need for Touhou style:

I guess I mean I think it's easier to get shit to sound good in Reason if you're a beginner than it is if you use a bunch of plugins. One might be able to figure out how a program like Cubase works faster, but they won't be able to make good music. Reason has most of the sounds you'll need right there, and IMO when used as a plugin it's the single best synth out there, plus it's sampler is pretty good for PCM based patches too, so learning it will be helpful in the long run, is what I meant to say.

There are times when I'll get feed up with the limitations of external PCM synths, and just open up soundforge, hit record, push every key one by one on my keyboard, and then cut up and build a patch out of the sounds for Reason's sampler device, just because it's that much easier to use than trying to fool with an external device.

I kind of learned most of what I know on my own. One thing that really helped with understanding was using a realtime spectral analyzer on my sounds. This program in the pic is something I use religiously. An analyzer like this shows you all the frequencies that are being heard at any given time, and seeing this information with your eyes rather than just hearing it with your ears helps you think logically about what the difference between different sounds is, so you can think about the difference between different sounds in a logical way and understand things like "this sound has a lot of high frequency harmonics on the attack" instead just thinking things like "it sounds kinda like a guitar" or whatever.

You've posted before, same character I think, because I recognise the style of the face. It seems all a bit too... uniform - the face is symetrical, everything is perfectly aligned, the eyes are perfect circles. I think if the hair wasn't so detailed it wouldn't be so striking.

I flipped through some manga for a reference and I notice a detailed head-on shot is almost always avoided - they always have their head tilted (back or sideways) are drawn with little detail, or have stupid expressions that make each side of the face different (raising eyebrow, closing an eye, cock goes here, etc). Maybe work some perpsective in next time.

Her thighs seem a sliver too thick in comparison to the rest of her. Either thin them or thicken her calves/arms. There is something wrong with her hip area, it looks almost like she is thrusting them out at an awkward angle.

I'll try it. Thanks.

Ugh, I always do this. I try to avoid it every time but I always screw it up.

I-It's not like I can't draw clothes or anything. It's just that I don't want to. Really, t-that's all.
>You've posted before, same character I think
Heh, not bad. I'm inpressed, Anon.
>the face is symetrical, everything is perfectly aligned, the eyes are perfect circles
Probably because I only drew one eye and then copypasted. Yeah, I'm that much of a lazy fag.

And yeah, I'm going to try adding some perspective next time.

I've seen a lot of blending, but hard cell cging is quite popular too (even though this is a combo). If you know you're shading, hard cell can look pretty damn good.

So ghostbros, where's your original content at?

>> No.2438299,2 [INTERNAL]

I could draw, once, when I was younger and the world was a simpler place, but not in the mango style and that skill has deteriorated from disuse anyway.
I can write, but I have this mental block where I associate it with ``work'' and then put it off forever. And besides, I have zero creativity.
I have no musical skill at all, in any sense of the word.
And I drink moderately and responsibly.
What else is there?

You can critique others. Or draw in SD style, which can mask your lack of skill and is rather cute.

Anyway, these threads got me interested in remixing music. I don't have any experience with that in particular, but I used to play an instrument, and know a bit of theory. Might help.

I don't know first thing about making a game, and although it would probably be fun to learn, it brings me back to the biggest problem--my creativity, or rather, my lack thereof. I don't have any ideas.

Unless you're talking about a visual novel. I've toyed with making one several times, but always lose interest / run out of ideas once it becomes time to write the actual script. Anyway, you don't need any programming know-how to make a visual novel unless you've decided to reinvent the wheel for fun. Every VN engine I looked at was incredibly intuitive, so it would be a piece of cake to take an already written story and turn it into a visual novel.
Of course, for a VN to take advantage of the whole electronic medium, it has to be more than just story. Look at Umineko, for example. Beautiful, beautiful mood-setting music, used to great effect. Plain, simplistic backgrounds that don't distract the reader from the story or the music, but help to establish the atmosphere.

I guess I got off-topic.

>>2438299,6
Even then, I don't have a scanner or any good way to draw directly on the computer. Tablet? Shit, man, I ain't even got a mouse. And somehow I get the feeling taking a blurry picture with my camera (it can't really focus close-up) and spending nine billion hours in Photoshop touching it up is more time than it's worth.
As for critique, it smacks of hypocrisy. It's one thing to insult someone's shitty artwork, but it's another to constructively criticize when you're, at best, no better.

I don't know. Reading this thread does give me a kind of wistful urge to create something, but I don't really know where to start, and I don't know if I want to invest any energy into trying to, say, relearn how to draw.

That post came out more pessimistic than I thought. Ah, well, it can't be helped.

I was running some random search queries when I came across this thread. Really, what happened to the spirit of producing OC for /jp/? There's some interesting/amusing info in this thread like (>>2434113).

Coincidentally, I think I posted (>>2436565). It wouldn't be until June that I felt like returning to /jp/ though.

You are now aware of the fact that in 9 months you haven't improved at all in drawing or music composition.

>people on /jp/ have only seen the Clannad anime
I don't like that one bit, I like to think that the people on /jp/ are the same people from pre-split /a/, the only shittyness is 'cause of how stagnant we are. I learned over the winter break that this is a delusion on my part and people thinking /jp/ is bogboy /a/ that they go to after they've been here all summer.
I'm hoping that things are going better by this time next month.

>I'm hoping that things are going better by this time next month.
I remember hearing that a few months ago...shortly before /bun/ was created.

Also are you still mouse-less Jones? Touchpads are shit tier, I don't know how you can stand it.
