Continuing from the last thread: I hate the krauts. They had a lot of trouble with different publishers and just think of the venus blood drama they caused. Don't forget the shit that Sacred called them out on. They should be destroyed by now. Yet they have a foothold in the industry now spamming their shit reviews and articles left and right. This seems likely to affect Nekonyan and Sekai the most since they are the most Steam reliant. Sekai even has a game which only has a Chinese translation while Nekonyan is partnered with Hikari Field (a Chinese localization company). Both JAST and Mangagamer have the occasional Steam game with a Chinese translation, but the Chinese market has never been the highest priority for either. IIRC, Mangagamer only provides Chinese translations for their all ages titles or whatever Chinese fan translators give them instead of titles like Kyonyuu Fantasy or Evenicle. I know the latter is even region blocked in China, but I don't know about the former.

NekoNyan pretty much killed Sol Press.
Both of them have a huge chunk of moege licenses, but NekoNyan has better licenses and they actually managed to get their titles on steam, unlike Sol Press.
Another dumb thing that Sol Press did was stall titles and prioritize steam releases first instead of releasing their titles on other eroge stores, releasing them only weeks later on JAST's store for example once all the hype died down. Meanwhile NekoNyan releases their titles on JAST, Denpasoft, MangaGamer, Fakku, Nutaku, etc.
Xev pissing off half of the cartel with his 70% pay cut contracts didn't help either or months of silence for the Iroseka backerKit, thank God I managed to get a refund.
>>23981580
ChronoBox was always a never ever for Sol Press. If you didn't know Xev somehow convinced the ChronoBox staff to make an all ages episodic title for steam instead of picking up ChronoBox, but to be honest most publishers would skip it since it has rape, only MangaGamer still releases titles with rape and gore these days since steam isn't their priority most of the time.

They did start out well with decent PR and frequenting the VN community making it seem like they were listening, but they then blew all that good will away with the messy launch of Oniikiss (which they had been hyped up as part of a meme making things even worse) where they lashed out at everyone when criticised and then went silent allowing for the hate to fester. They never really recovered from that, but on top of that it turned out they were paying some of the worse wages possible even for the usual standards in the VN space which killed people wanting to work with them.

>> No.23989911

>>23989809
I'd say that opinion of them on the VN front started going sour from the moment the Iroseka Kickstarter launched and it was a misguided mess of vague statements, confusing clarifications, and unanswered questions. That should have been a wake up call to Sol Press that they were doing something wrong, but once it barely scraped by with funding they completely dropped all mention of that project and moved on to the next thing, leaving everyone in the dust with no news and no updates. Onikiss' mess on release was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

>> No.23990413

>>23989809
Yeah, Sol Press started out great (relatively speaking) and then just went to shit in such a short time. I guess it was too good to be true. It also doesn't help that there's just not enough customers outside of Steam, so there's really only so much they can do (of course, I'm not excusing all the bullshit)

>> No.23990669

>>23990413
They started up because of the Steam boom and payed the price for depending too heavily on it. Then to make matters worse, they burnt bridges with both the fans and the translators so they really got nothing left on the VN front.

They had the potential to be a great company, but they made too many mistakes. That and trying to follow the SP model of Kickstarter after Kickstarter.

>> No.23991360

>>23990669
Nekonyan seems a lot better off, but they still are very Steam reliant despite efforts to sell their games in various other marketplaces. It honestly doesn't seem like the moege niche is viable without Steam, and Steam China could be impactful enough to make Steam VNs nonviable, depending on exactly how much of that market relied on China specifically. It's always possible that Chinese speakers outside of China will be enough to support the VN market or that the Chinese government will be lax when it comes to Steam China though.

>> No.23991577

>>23991360
>it doesn't seem like the moege niche is viable without steam
Some people seem to forget that western releases of VN's have been around since 1994? '96? and have been turning a profit because companies are still releasing titles to this day. There's money to be made without steam, most companies just don't want to put in the effort required in their titles to make that money though.

>> No.23993640

>>23991577
The reason I specify that the moege niche is unviable without Steam because companies couldn't specialize on moege before Steam came around. There's a reason why JAST and Mangagamer are generalist localization companies instead of moege focused like Nekonyan. It's not like moege were guaranteed flops (Shuffle was popular, and Da Capo broke even from what I remember), but they couldn't hold up a company like nukige or gameplay titles could. To be fair, maybe there's now enough of an established audience of moege willing to migrate out of Steam that moege sales will still flourish without Steam (thus leaving Nekonyan viable even if Steam becomes an unviable marketplace). Still, outside of Steam, the most consistently selling titles are nukige or gameplay titles, and that hasn't changed too much.

Cherry Kiss Games also hires pretty much anyone I'm pretty sure, although all they licence is Norn/Miel nukige.
Your ideal path as a freelance translator, assuming you're doing it for the money and not passion for the VN inidustry, is Cherry Kiss or Sol Press > MG/Nekonyan/Sekai/JAST > LNs/Manga.

It also depends on your speed. If you're fast you can make good money even if you don't work that much. But increased speed often leads to decreased quality, since if you rush through a translation you can make alot of careless mistakes. Unfortunately, if someone's goal is to make as much money as they can translating, they will likely rush to make more money for less hours of work.

Probably costs too much for a nukige. Or it could be that FAKKU already have ties with Omegastar since they licenced the anime for Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo. Maybe it's one of their "10 unannounced licences" they talked about a year or two ago.

I'm still half-convinced that NN is just a rebranded SP and one day they will take all of SP's remaining projects.

>> No.24019163

>>24019100
I thought that was a joke until SP sold NN their Dracu-Riot translation then I realized it was true because no company is going to sell their direct competitor a translation, especially when their previous releases from the same developer sold extremely well.
>Well SP can't do anything with it so of course they're going to sell it to a company that can!
Logically yes, but we've seen SP intentionally sit on completely finished products to the point they lose the license and they still do nothing with it (Teaching Feeling). There's absolutely no fucking way they're selling a translation of a title from a highly profitable developer to a direct competitor unless they're A: The same company or B: The CEO's are the best of friends and plan to absorb the least financially successful company into the other.

>> No.24019479

>>24019163
Teaching Feeling is different because there was nobody new that had the license to sell to, plus a newer version came out that they didn't have the license to anyway leaving them with nothing. If Sekai burned money on a license, then burned money on buying the fan translation, then burned more money on a TL check and re-edit and were stuck with being unable to release it then it makes perfect sense to sell it if given the opportunity by someone else picking up the license after them. If they were smart they would negotiate some sort of percentage deal instead of a lump sum.
The biggest give away that that NN aren't secretly sekai is dovac hasn't made a self felating twitter rant at his success yet and that he hasn't fucked it up yet.

>> No.24021140

>>24019163
It's definitely suspicious. Generally, the tactic of a localization company of a license or translation they can't use is to simply sit on it so competitors can't profit. I lean a bit more on the "really chummy" theory than the "same company" theory though.

TF had them sitting on it because they kept wanting to release the newest version instead of just releasing a version that's actually ready and then updating it over time, and then they also held off on releasing it because they wanted to release it with Fakku as part of their partnership. In the end they took too long to release it so Ray got fed up with them and cut things off.

Ray didn't keep the uncensored assets which SP wanted from them, that's it. It bothered SP because they wanted to release it uncensored (which seemed weird for them but I guess makes sense once Fakku gets added to the picture) but it didn't do anything to hold up the release.

To be fair, nearly all Nekonyan releases are medium or long moege except for any fandisks they translate while most of the JAST releases in the past couple of years were pretty short. Though it's still kind of funny.

Assuming Nekonyan continues focusing on longer titles like they have so far, the ideal release schedule would be once every quarter with maybe even bi-monthly releases once they become big or organized enough. Mangagamer is able to release monthly, but that's partially because they license a few short titles here or there to patch up the months when they can't release a longer title.

I imagine Sumaga will get released sometime soon given that they made that announcement about it last year. They probably planned to release it after Totono and when Totono got delayed it pushed Sumaga back as well. As for Django, lol.
