I just saw Paprika. While the movie was good, what really hooked me was the music...

Susumu Hirasawa is fucking awesome, transformational. It's not standard Enya new agey BS... It's irrational, scizophrenic music. It makes you feel like laughing at catastrophic destruction, even happy pieces, such as the title track of Paprika. I'm becoming obsessed.

Is this not standard fare for Japanese music, or are there more artists like this? Does anyone know any other artists that have this quality? Maybe even western or non-Japanese I don't care.

Wow, this is slightly less nerdy than what's usually posted around here. GTFO.

Thats because its not moe moe.

But it is hardcore by any standards, I'm still working my way through it actually. Keep in mind most people on myanimelist who claim they've watched it actually havent anyway.

The problem I have with Paprika is that while its actually pretty good it reminds me too much of that shitty film with Keanu Reeves in it.

Paprika is the least "entry level" (hurr durr) Satoshi Kon anime since the director uses all the themes from his previous works, and add some Japanese pop culture to the mix. You probably can't grasp easily what the fuck it is about without seeing at least Perfect Blue, Milenium Actress and Paranoia Agent.

It is a movie about loving cinema.

I really wish people would stop using this phrase. It's annoying elitism, and watching anime is nothing to be proud of.

Actually you CAN without having seen those films. Do you need to have seen the films Cinema Paradiso references to understand it? No. You dont.

Cinema Paradiso is superior in that aspect anyway. This thread is now about Cinema Paradiso.

You don't need the references to get the movie, you need to understand what it's about. Satoshi Kon uses the same themes in his movies, and Paprika is a mesh of everything he has done before.
As visualy stunning it may be, I can't see how anyone can enjoy it plainly without knowing at least all the director previous works.
Being about cinema and Japanese pop culture doesn't help.

>It's not standard Enya new agey BS...

Why would you think it is in the first place? What makes you compare the two at all? Of course they have nothing to do with each other.

>It's irrational, scizophrenic music. It makes you feel like laughing at catastrophic destruction

Well... welcome to the wonderful world of industrial music. You see people talking about entry levels above... well, Hirasawa is just an entry level here. It gets worse. Much, much worse. And Japan is usually at the "worse" end of the spectrum here (let's just say it's called noise, and for a good reason). Western bands, on the other hand, are often punk-influenced and you may witness them singing in the way you don't really want to hear. Straight out of my head, you may want to check Legendary Pink Dots - they're not purely electronic, but give off a similar vibe - catchy schizophrenic melodies that would still sound way too strange for casual listener.

There's also a possibility, of course, that you just heard modern electronic music for the first time at all and I should tell you to start all the way from Kraftwerk, Brian Eno and Yellow Magic Orchestra. I mean, is Enya really the closest match here? Really?
