Well rearward folding wings were only done by what? The Grumman aircraft corporation and the Japanese Seiran? It's pretty clear the upward folding wings are preferred. Probably due to complexity, more weight, and it's easier to install automatic folding wing mechanisms so the wings for upward folding wings than rearward folding without as much weight penalty. For example the F6F and F4F usually needed some manual help for folding their wings wings(and also needed crank for their landing gear).
Meanwhile corsairs, especially later corsairs could fold their wings at a push of a button. TBF Avengers had rearward wings and could also automatically fold/unfold their wings but the weight penalty wasn't seen as an issues since torpedo bombers don't have to be the most maneuverable things. I have no idea about the Seiran's folding wings.
