I was going to rec some but it seems like most Japanese movies I've watched are older than 2010.
Some typical recs would be
Cold Fish
Confessions
Flying Colors
Wood Job
Shin Gojira
I Am a Hero
One Cut of the Dead
Outrage
Shoplifters
The Snow White Murder Case
100 Yen Love

The most visually striking Japanese movie is, of course, Hausu. It has a Criterion BD release.

I finished watching the OG Terrace House a couple days ago. It was really good in general, but the last two cours were kinda meh, specially all that Kenken/Ryoko-chan/Michiko drama.
I couldn't wait much so I just marathoned the first three episode of BGITC and it feels kinda soulless. I hope it gets better in the next episodes. The music sucks tho, I need Taylor Swift and chasing cars and all that cool music from before.
Also, Yama-chan is married to Yu Aoi? WTF?

It might also be because I watched Dakara Watashi wa Oshimashita right before and enjoyed it thoroughly as pleb as I might sound.

There's also the fact that overacting turn me off and it's almost in all the mainstream japanese drama. Is there a cultural reason why it's so prevalent? Is it a leftover from kabuki?

>> No.24254236

>>24254058
Yes, Japan didn't go the cultural revolution of method acting like the rest of the world and only pursued theater acting. It's not like they can't do method, maybe no-name actors, but they go with the norm which is theater. Films are where method acting is mainly displayed but it's only a few directors.

Hanzawa Naoki is special because it highlights one of the biggest problems Japan faces every day and does so in a genre that Japan doesn't usually do right, thrillers. The plot is exciting while also offering a sort of "hero" of the salraymen work culture. Unlike something like Shitamachi Rocket, which is pure salrayman small business GOOD power fantasy, HN constantly puts the main character in dire situations and he has to use his wits to outsmart everyone. It may be unrealistic but it's in a way we wish was real. A lot of us here either live or have lived in Japan so the drama really hits close to home.

Don't mind this anon>>24253242 who always offers his opinion when the show is brought up. He doesn't seem to "get" it even though we've explained it to him. His tastes are just different so maybe yours will be too.

I've been watching a lot more international stuff recently and checked out All About Lily Chou-Chou and after watching it it just weirdly made me want to watch something soothing and relaxing, yet grounded. But not Terrace House, something definitely scripted (throughout).

I can't quite put it into words, but can you recommend some soothing series where Japanese actors don't always yell and overact? Something very low-key (and ideally not taking place in Tokyo). The time period, date of release don't really matter, just a scripted grounded movie or TV show.

The Legend of the Stardust Brothers, from '85. there was a remake a few years ago (i haven't seen it). but the original is great including the soundtrack (especially if you like 80's new wave).
>>24351963
i haven't seen Lily Chou-Chou yet, but i have seen a chunk of Iwai's 90's movies. in terms of movies, i think quite a few of the big name (aka won an award/favorable screening at some int'l film festival at some point) directors from that 90's/early 00's time period have made films with rather muted or hushed acting performances. however a good chunk of those have little bouts of drama/energy.. not sure if that kills the "low-key" description (i feel Iwai's films i've seen fall in this category but like i said i haven't seen Lily Chou-Chou yet). and "definitely scripted".. i think of someone like Hirokazu Koreeda's movies which, while there's obviously a script, you can tell from a good chunk of the scenes that the actors were given a lot of wiggle room (occasionally giving that hyper-realism feel, most clear example is his film Distance, but none of his other films have that same level of documentary feel). anyway without overthinking on your descriptors i recommend Koreeda's 2011 "I Wish" (Kiseki). simple story, realistic scenario/characters, easy to watch/relaxing, and it takes place in kyuushuu and western honshuu.

Not really, it wasn't that good. I think best part of the show was that guy who was bullied at work place. Naoki stuff was rather basic "cat & mouse" stuff you see often in J-shows. Genre was just new thing and good actors. One of my problems was that the show couldn't keep it's tone. The guy who got bullied, his part felt like drama, Naoki stuff was like your usual up beat detective stuff, but maybe bit more serious, but then there was occasions like that gay inspector who was just gag character... I don't know what I'm even trying to say. It's not a good show. Just watch Legal High, it's straight out funny and Argaki Yui is hot in it.

If you want to stick with Kitano then Outrage is your best bet, maybe Violent Cop. I'd recommend a Miike yakuza movie but he injects weird kinky sex into all of them, that might be a deal breaker for a movie with pops. You're probably better off with a hong kong work.

I only watched the movie but apparently the series is better and adds more backstory. I only found out about deepcut after the movie so I kinda regret not going for it, but still loved it. I'd say go with deepcut.
>Sion Sono produced his feature film “The Forest of Love” for Netflix, in 2019. Now, the streaming platform is releasing the miniseries that was part of the initial project with the director. In seven episodes of between 32 and 51 minutes, the material now receives an extension that adds greater uniformity and harmony to the whole concept. It could be argued that it is a bit irritating why a compressed form appeared, when the series is obviously the original – probably marketing reasons play an important role here.

Help please identify this movie I watched in Wowow cable channel.

It's about a wife getting seduced by a stranger through the phone while her husband is in the hospital.

The stranger is actually hired by someone to take revenge on the husband by seducing the wife.

This guy installs hidden cameras inside the home and calls the wife pretending to be a stranger looking for phone sex.

She falls for the temptation thinking he was just some random horny guy, she doesn't know she was being watched through the hidden cameras.

Eventually he convinces her to do more kinky stuff, and they have sex.

I can't remember if they had sex in the hospital room while the husband was unconscious, maybe it was a different movie.

At the end of the movie, the husband was discharged from the hospital and he was led to the hideout of the guy.

The husband was about to shoot the guy but the wife blocked the shot.

Thanks. Like I said I don't wanna be a nuisance so I'll just settle with this one and be thankful.
>do you watch a lot of japanese movies, different directors? do you plan on being interested in japanese (or other "asian") cinema for a long while?
I've been watching dramas for 16 years but just last thread I started to have interest in movies after an anon posted a list of directors and I've been torrenting all of their works like crazy, I just finished downloading Kitano Takeshi's works. So there are shit tons of movies from a dozen or more of directors I have to download.
>i don't mind sending an invite but like i said before i'd like it to go to somebody who'd use the site properly and for the long term
I can see myself downloading like crazy for a long time. I do have a question though, how do seeding work exactly in such websites? I remember joining similar websites and after downloading one file and seemingly letting it seeding for a day or more I still got a warning for having a low ratio and I couldn't download any other torrent. I'm not sure if I was doing something wrong but if I can get a handle on how to do it properly I'll be downloading and seeding forever.

>> No.24587198

>>24586562
I wouldn’t drop any show. I might have said not good but they’re not unwatchable. It’s just for some of us here who’ve been watching dramas our entire life, we had enough of cliches and popular leads dramas, what we look for is good stories, good directing and good acting. Most of popular dramas (which are basically the entirety of that torrent file) lack one or more of these traits. For a beginner it’s absolutely fine and I recommend you watching them just to get the gist and then you can dig deeper for kinos, which let me say are extremely rare in the Japanese drama industry. If you want the good shit then watch Japanese movies.

By the way, take a look at the pastebin on the OP, it’s outdated and lacks some titles especially from the last 10 years but overall it’s full of highly-acclaimed dramas (doesn’t mean they’re great, just popular).

ratio matters for this site too. i don't remember the specifics but it's probably something like if you go past 5 GB of downloaded material, they'll start to penalize you if you have a lopsided download-heavy ratio. you want uploads to be higher than downloads as much as possible. the easy trick to do is this: you can search for torrents that have a gold star icon, that means free leech. download big files with the gold star icon, leave your torrent client up and let time build your upload amount.
if that sounds doable and you have adequate hard drive space, send me an email you will remember or a way to get in contact w/ you to send email (discord temp email etc).
