He's mentioned before that he's turned down projects due to a fan translation existing. Even went so far as to say that one of them was fairly popular on /vn/ and the Japanese company wanted it over officially but he turned them down. So it could be the case that once he figured out a fan translation came out and the patch was already out in the wild he lost all interest and the talks fell through.
With how many licenses he ended up with in so short a time while also doing the same for LNs and manga it looks like he took another page out of the Sekai playbook of trying to get as many licenses as possible as quick as possible with no respect to how long it'd take to get through their backlog of preexisting licenses.

Where are they going to sell it though? DLsite? I guess if they want the titles on Steam; they can butcher it badly and provide a patch like Cherry Kiss or Kagura games.

>>24149550
That strategy is probably okay for LNs or manga since the company is just releasing one light novel or volume at a time anyways, but doing the same for visual novels just clogs up the backlog. Mangagamer, JAST, and Sekai all have major titles stuck in their backlog partially because of the pressure to announce new titles every year. Arguably Nekonyan too if you count the one Hooksoft game they delayed.

>> No.24152093

>>24149944
It astounds me that company can fuck up that badly to the point of leaving the scene when other companies can survive with all their controversies.

Sekai has Dovac, shit translations, shit programming, a backlog so bad that a company left them and unfulfilled Kickstarters.

MG has a rough start with shit selections and shit translations (these two still occur, I guess), voice patches, expensive licenses that no one buys, shit pay and the heat for taking so long on games like Higuarashi or Rance.

But Sol Press managed to combine the problems from both side into one company. Although, I guess the real reason is probably the VN Steam market being dead?

>> No.24152291

>>24152093
>shit pay and the heat for taking so long on games like Higuarashi or Rance.
That's true for Sekai and JAST too. If anything, Mangagamer has the least delay related crimes. Higurashi taking so long and Rance 10 not likely coming out in the next 3 years are really bad, but that is nothing compared to Sekai delaying multiple big titles that were already paid for by kickstarter backers or JAST having Sumaga stuck in their backlog for what I'm pretty sure is a decade. At least no one has to do voice patches anymore (though Sekai trying that with G-Senjou so long after MG stopped using them was kind of funny)

Sharin no Kuni still isn't released by frontwing despite the kickstarter ending 4 years ago. It took Degica 3 years to get all of the muv-luv trilogy out, 4 years if you count the wait for the partial restoration patches.

>>24152093
The Steam VN market isn't dead, but their weirdness in what they allow or not makes it less reliable than before. Blaming this all on Steam though is an excuse and an easy way out.
I think he fell into the trap of thinking that any VN no matter the quality would sell if it made it on to Steam when he started his company then went crazy with trying to get everything on Steam at the expense of everything else. They went so hard in their single minded focus on Steam they'd delay the standard 18+ versions by months after a Steam release and do a slow drip release of them way later after nobody cared for them anymore after bad word of mouth or even worse no word of mouth because their licenses were so uninteresting people weren't even bothering to pirate them. That's a misreading the market and selecting the wrong licenses problem and a big reason why none of their games were selling.

>> No.24152482

>>24152093
>shit pay
The pay is bad. But unlike what Arunaru would have you believe, it's the standard. So it's not as if they're worse than the others.
Exceptions naturally do exists with everything, but they remain exceptions. And typically exceptions for specific jobs too. It's not as one of the competitors have a notably better standard fee than everyone else does.
It's kind of standard. For better or worse.

I've never backed their Kickstarters, the things they've fucked up were things I didn't really care about, and the handful of games from them that I've been interested in were things they happened to do a decent job with (e.g. Clannad). If you want to release a statement supporting the protests, whatever, I don't really care. My guess is that the funds are partially used for translating and localizing future Alicesoft titles while the rest are kept as back up funds for when experimental titles flop. An example of the former is them spending extra resources on Rance Quest while an example of the latter is how Luckydog1 being a horrible mistake isn't an issue since even Alicesoft titles not expected to do well like Sengoku Rance still have a long tail. Mangagamer has always used consistently selling titles to help bankroll their passion projects: an example earlier in their lifetime is how cheap nukige funded the translation of Overdrive titles that never seemed to sell well. They definitely wouldn't have licensed Rance 10 so early or even take time in their Anime Central video to genuflect for being slow if Rance wasn't selling extremely well.

You are since it was leaked that even the more successful titles(ignoring the outliers like Evenicle that did extremely well on steam) like Sengoku was only selling around 2k on their store. It might be a bit more now but it still isn't exactly the runaway success a lot of people expected either.

This is probably true for most titles, though chances are, Escalayer preorder sales probably made MG more money than whatever Kagura titles sold at the same time, if only because Escalayer is more expensive and MG presumably gets a bigger chunk of the money. SR still somehow being on the weekly chart means that its overall sales are probably significantly higher than 2k (which is already way more than the average title, assuming the average is a few hundred) by this point. I doubt the overall sales number is too ridiculous though; 3k is a pretty optimistic estimate.

I guess the pic may not have been clear enough, but i'm talking about the FIRST episode, and again, you sound like you haven't even played it. I could make a list of what i didn't like in the FIRST episode (and thus make me have doubts about playing through the rest, specially if we're talking about paying 20 bucks for each) or name VNs that i actually liked to try and refute the "he's expecting too much of the medium" part but i feel both would be pointless if all i'm gonna hear is "muh sales" or "just stop playing VNs".

I can see a few reasons why they aren't hurrying it with the first being that they already have a big backlog of Alicesoft titles they have been sitting on for a while now. Another blow for it is that they lost Arunaru so they don't have him to plow through the translation at super speed any more.
They also probably realised that just because they have the original on Steam they are still very unlikely to get the second approved nowadays.

You mean the offsite patches that are still censored with rewrites and replaced content that differs from the japanese original release and they never told anyone they rewrote some of the content and removed certain things and replaced it with other stuff found in the title? The offsite patches where the only reason we know they pulled a Sekai Project Maitetsu with it is because some JOP read the original and then reread the english version and pointed out all the shit they censored? These same patches that are included baseline in the Mangagamer releases of those titles where MG had to refund customers who bought it because it was actually censored despite the developer saying it wasn't until someone took screenshots of the uncensored jap release and the censored western release and then the developer backpedaling hard on it going

It's still creepy as hell by progressive twitter tranny standards. I have no idea why people like herkz and haro still talk to the guy despite knowing what he got in trouble for. I guess he's so untouchable he wouldn't get fired from MG even if he diddled a real minor because he's the only good hacker available.

Possibly. Doddler is the only full time programmer well known in the VN scene. The other companies might have a full time in house programmer too, but if they exist, they don't stand out as much as Doddler. The lack of full time programmers isn't quite the end of the world as some titles are sent back to the parent company who do the programming instead of the localization company. Of the top of my head, I think that's how it works for Clock up, Waffle, and Nitro Plus titles, though it's probably negotiated on a per title basis. That isn't always the case though, and the fact that MG has a full time in house programmer might be one reason they can release titles monthly.

Most of the updates are relatively minor, but MG announced a 5th secret project that's also 100% translated and edited. I guess we're getting at least 4 titles announced this year. Rance 02 is also in beta and since that title is really short, it shouldn't take too long, but due to the number of titles that were out of beta before Rance 02 (Room no 9, Eternal Torment, and Wan Nyan), I wouldn't expect it until fall. Even if MG does decide to prioritize it, I'm guessing that MG wants to leave at least a 3 month gap between it and Escalayer. The audience for both isn't exactly the same, but there's probably a good deal of overlap.

The first episode is as bland as the heroine, to say the least. It ends at a cliffhanger, with nothing resolved. The heroine acts like an annoying clingy jew. The chuuni is bad. The fights are bad. But the other side heroines, specially the sister, showed promise.

When it released, there were two opinions around it. The kind who saw this episodic title as what it was, a total failure that shows the worst of the nature of episodic releases, and gave up after ep1. And then the people who saw some hope in the rest of the heroines, specially the sister (2nd ep). The plot could be corrected if they polished the story and got better direction. And basically everything else, except adding some more tachies and CGIs, was already done. Those people gave up on the plot, and continued reading it as a charage.

Not likely at all. After the titles Mangagamer has already announced, there is still Rance 03, Evenicle 2, and Beat Valkyrie Ixseal as far as near guaranteed pick ups go. Then there are the milf titles, which could theoretically catch on and sell well if they establish their own type of fan base. If anyone doesn't think that Ixseal isn't a near guaranteed pick up, Escalayer seems to be selling well enough despite being $10 more expensive than Haruka and honestly being really similar other than the lack of castle raiding mechanics. Escalayer is better in my opinion, but not drastically so.

Maybe it's because seeing the same character get railed in roughly the same way 40 times by slightly different characters is boring? Haruka had 2 major characters 1 not-quite-major character, and some one-off side character scenes with each heroine having similar scenes to each other but presented entirely differently. Escalayer has like 40 scenes for the main heroine and then 2 or 3 for a side character + 1 or 2 combined scenes.
