I was kinda hoping there was a huge payoff to the confusion and big reveals in the final chapters but even with the one chapter where all the scenes are put in chronological order (I assume that was what it was supposed to be), the plot didn't really seem to make sense in the end.

Just a follow up on this in case anyone is interested or maybe some person in the future will search the archives for it or something. I uncommented all the of the japanese text and removed all of the english text in the nss files and repacked everything back into npa. This patch gives you the voices from the PS2 release keeps all the Japanese text. Only tested this on the "斬魔大聖デモンベイン Nitro The Best！ Vol.3" release, but it probably works on the DVD version of demonbane as well (it's all the same shit).

Disclaimer: It's not perfect though. The original english patch that I sourced this from has quite a few missing/broken voice lines. Luckily, they did rip all the voices correctly. They just forgot to mark them a few of them in the nss files for whatever reason. I've read through Chapter 1 so far and fixed those. The rest I will do as I read through the game. In the meantime, here's what I have so far in case I die in a car crash or something. When I finish everything, I'll link back to this post and upload a final, complete version.

The thing with Kanon is that everything else has done what it does better. Not just Key but other companies have made games clearly inspired in part by Kanon, that improve on the formula.

If we were discussing this when it launched I'm sure I would be recommending it and saying it's fantastic but now, unless you are extremely new to otaku culture it's almost guaranteed you've seen what it does before. Shit, Air and Clannad alone obsolete it.

Finished Amakano 2, more specifically the Chitose route since it's the only one I could sit through.
It's hard to bash the game since it clearly delivers on what it sets out to do but something about it is just lacking. The lack of any story/drama besides seeing the relationship between MC and the girl develop ( in the most predictable and safest way possible) makes the game just feel too empty for me. Chitose is dream woman and the CG's are excellent but I don't think I'll remember anything about this game in a couple of months aside from the MC’s mother.

They need to fix existing routes, not add new ones. I'm still unsure how the fuck something like Kamome's route can even happen. She has like 40 minutes of screentime. Unlike Little Busters, Summer Pockets actually has likable main heroines aside of the main main one, so them not even trying to give them a real route and place to be is just fucking sad. So broken that later flashbacks even included scenes I never even got.


Summer Pockets felt like an early alpha. Adding new routes isn't fixing this, and I fear they won't do much else. Unless the "extended common route" actually has heroine events in there as well. A lot.

I didn't plan on updating this so soon, but I found a somewhat important oversight on my part. Apparently English lines that happened to start with "se" weren't deleted. Probably because I was trying to avoid getting rid of anything that started with "<se" (sound effect) and messed up somewhere in bash. I actually love it when the protagonist is voiced and even has sprites, like in 装甲悪鬼村正; self-inserting is just something I never do when reading fiction and I view characters almost like a friend I dearly care about (if I like them).
At the very minimum a protagonist needs some semblance of personality; otherwise the romance is just too unbelievable or there simply is no chemistry with the heroines. For this case, the VN will cheap out with a "nice guy" event where by helping out the heroine once with a problem they win total affection.
Internal monologue helps establish personality for the reader. But at times internal monologue can be tedious: an example is Hello Lady and るいはともを呼ぶ from the same writer in which I found the former to be very tedious and the latter to be fine (both were voiced).

I don't like that since it ends up with all the girls repeating what the MC is supposed to be saying to them before responding, feels pretty unnatural.

Your middle road comment reminds me of when I read Sugar Style; the protagonist had a sense of humour so the interactions between the characters was pretty entertaining. But once he entered a route (Kaname) he suddenly became wimpy and insecure, which just killed the dynamic. I wonder if it was a deliberate choice to suddenly move to the latter and help people self-insert.

Im just tired of MCs being given a personality but its gutted and devoid of any structure just so people dont see them as their own character.
