Russia is a drunken beast that is dangerous and bitey most of the time, but sometimes does wonders like destroying Napoleon or Hitler.

I spent a few month in Japan, and from what I gathered, as a previous poster put it, if you go looking, you'll find issues; and, as another poster put it, it seems to increase with age.

I had very few issues while there (I was a software engineer, working in Tokyo). Generally, as long as you speak the language as well as possible (hell, even -try- to speak it, out of courtesy, and at the very least carry and translation book), you'll be well received. There isn't as big of a stigma as there once was, although heirs of it remain with some folks. Overall, though, as long as you are a productive member of society, obey custom, listen to the people around you, and generally don't give off the "loud American" vibe, it's not bad at all.

Xenophobia is a healthy part of Asian society. I spent elementary school and 1 year of junior high in Japan before moving to NZ. I've met LESS racism in Japan than I have in New Zealand, although back in the day Japan didn't view Chinese people unfavorably. But this is from experience when I lived there:

There were 3 Korean kids at school (that i know of), and the way people treated them was drastically different. On the one hand, two of them would sort of huddle together all the time, speaking in Korean and socializing with no one else. I've never heard any outright racism, but those two were generally shunned by all the Japanese kids. On the other hand, there was this one other Korean kid who "assimilated well", spoke pretty good Japanese, knew how to avoid offending people, and basically people treated him well. They appreciated his differences, rather than hated him for it, even though he wasn't much different from the other Koreans. It's a matter of self-image, and people's attitudes towards you.

I don't believe they think foreigners are inferior or despicable, but I do believe they don't want too many living with them. Not exactly racism or xenophobia, and I don't think Westerners can relate, but Asians should be able to.

For the most part, Japan is changing. The youth of Japan see the west as COOL for the most part and are distancing themselves from traditional culture. In one or two generations you'll see the xenophobia fade a lot more significantly. With that said, xenophobia is different from exclusion. i was eating at a restaurant once, and the muslim students were asking the chef and manager to prepare food a certain way.
everything in the restaurant was quiet and everyone was watching them.
